BASIC ELEECTRICAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THERMAL POWER STATION

CENTRAL ELECTRICITY AUTHORITY NEW DELHI MAY 1992

SECTION 12 D.C. STORAGE BATTERY

12.1 Total loss of station supply from the grid system although a remote probability cannot be entirely ruled out. This in turn could lead to tripping of all the turbo-generator sets in the power station on account of supply failure of station auxiliaries. In such an emergency situation, continuity of power supply has to be necessarily maintained in certain essential station and unit auxiliaries. The Station and unit auxiliaries for which emergency no-break power supply from the D.C. storage battery is required are listed below: Minimum emergency lighting (Refer clause 17.1.3) Hydrogen seal-oil system. Bearing-oil system (emergency lubricating oil pump) Fire protection and fire alarm system. Telephone system. Control and instrumentation system. Annunciation system. Scanner air system. Electrical protection system. Turbine D.C. Jacking oil pump (wherever applicable) Any other emergency load considered necessary. Static invertors shall be employed where A.C. no-break supply is needed from the D.C. Storage battery during loss of A.C. supply for essential instrumentation and control requirement. This requirement shall be met from a separate battery. The ampere-hour capacity of the D.C.storage battery shall be based on half an hour supply to the essential auxiliaries listed in clause 12.2. Two sets of 22CV batteries each catering to 100 per cent load shall be provided for each unit/switchyard. The permissible voltage variation for 220V battery shall be from 190V to 240V. One set of 48V/110V battery of 100% capacity shall be provided for coal handling plant and C.W.system (if located at a distance from the main plant).

To cater to the electronic and microprocessor load of the C&I systems, two sets of + 24 volts batteries shall be provided for each unit. These batteries shall be rated for half an hour shall comprise of 13 cells each and the permissible voltage variation shall be between 22.5V and 28V. Separate 48V or 24V batteries shall be provided for telephone system, firefighting system etc.
