INSTRUCTOR: Alberto Martnez EMAIL: amartinez@citytech.cuny.edu LECTURE HOURS: Thurs. 2:30-5:00 PM. ROOM: N0602A OFFICE HOURS: Thursdays 12:00-1:00 PM. OFFICE: P. 613F

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the principles of general chemistry. As a first semester course in a twopart series, it provides the concepts of atomic structure, nomenclature, stoichiometry, chemical bonding and geometry and types of chemical reactions. Pre- or co- requisites: MAT 1275, ENG 092R, CHEM 1110L. If you withdraw from the lecture, you must withdraw from the lab and vice versa. Textbook: Chang, Chemistry, 11th Edition, McGraw-Hill Higher Education, 2011 Options: 1) Available in the bookstore as customized text Volume 1 for CHEM 1110 only. 2) Volume 1 can also be purchased directly from McGraw-Hill General Chemistry, CHEM 1100: Chemistry Vol I with Connect PPK (NY City College of TechnologyCOL8): http://mhprofessional.com/mhhe_product.php?isbn=0077761820&cat=108, $59 net plus shipping. 3) To purchase the online eBook of Chang Chemistry, go to www.coursesmart.com Laboratory Manual: Chemistry 1110 Laboratory Manual Dr. Suresh Tewani

Goal of the course: Utilize critical thinking to learn fundamental concepts in general chemistry and to find the connection between chemistry and our daily life.

General Learning Outcomes: 1. Describe the atom and subatomic particles; solve problems relating to the atomic structure. 2. Nomenclature: name molecular and ionic compounds; acids and bases. 3. Quantify relationships between reactants/products or reactant/reactant from a balanced chemical reaction. 4. Understand the relationship between all gas law variables. 5. Classify the types of chemical reactions that occur in aqueous solutions as well as understanding the interactions between ions. Predict the products of various chemical reactions, such as acid-base reactions and precipitation reactions. 6. Describe an atomic orbital; represent electrons in an atom using orbital diagrams and electron configurations. 7. Use the periodic table as a cheat sheet to predict periodic trends. 8. Understand bonding patterns, draw (Lewis) structures, predict the shape of molecules and hybridization.

Grading Criteria: Lecture counts 75% of the total grade of the course Laboratory counts 25% of the total grade of the course The lecture grade will be based on three exams (45 %), the final examination (20%), class participation and homework (10 %), and the laboratory grade (25 %). You must pass the lab in order to pass the course; The department policy is that failure in the laboratory component will result in failure of the course (even if passing the lecture). Grading Standards: Grades will be assigned as follows: A 93-100% AB+ 87-89.9% B C+ 77-79.9% C D 60-69.9 F

90-92-9% 83-86.9 70-76.9 59.9 and below

Chapter Coverage and Problem solving: Answers to most problems are available in the Solution Manual. Exam questions will be similar, but not necessarily identical, to the in-chapter problems. Attendance Policy: The Colleges policy on class attendance and lateness is specified on pages 31 of the 2011-2013 College Catalog. A student may be absent without penalty for 10% of the number of scheduled class meetings during the semester as follows: For classes meeting twice a week, that is 3 absences. For a class meeting once a week, that is 1 absence. Attendance is mandatory. Always arrive on time every time. Make-up Policy: There is no make up for missed examination. Grade for any missed exam is 0, or else prorated for documented and acceptable absences. It is the students responsibility to note exam times at the beginning of the semester, and to be sure not to schedule other activities during this time. Academic Integrity Policy: All students are expected to uphold the Colleges policy regarding cheating on exams or facilitating academic dishonesty of others. A complete statement of the policy is available at www.citytech.cuny.edu. Additional Help: The Academic Learning Center at the Atrium offers chemistry tutoring service. Please check the tutoring schedule. Homework Policy: Homework will be randomly collected at the end of every chapter and will not be accepted if handed late. The use of Cell Phones in class is not allowed. The use of Smart Phones, iPads and similar devices will not be allowed during exams.
