THE DECEMBER CHRISTMAS GATHERING

A few of the regulars gathered early for the culinary delights of Bijou as is customary for most organisations at this time of year. You could call it a low key Christmas party. See photo. Performances got started a bit later than usual because everyone was having a good time talking guitars, picks, pick ups and strings. Apologies from our scheduled bass player, Gavin Barras. His car broke down and couldnt make the gig. Andy Hulme and I got things going with a couple of standards followed by the ever popular solo guitar of Brian Lewis. Les Renshaw was up next with some vocals to his own accompaniment and brought along his friend Paul on sax. The guitar trio of Ray Brooker, Charles Howorth and Tony Cordes, which has actually become a quartet with John Gracie on bass guitar, gave us an unusual version of Autumn Leaves and Pennies from Heaven. Dave Faulkner, all the way from Uttoxeter, gave a few solo guitar pieces and then Andy joined him for a rendition of Jos Feliciano's Affirmation. Guy Boden, with his custom seven string guitar,7th string as the highest string and tuned in fourths, played Lady Bird and one of his own compositions. Geoff Smith, from Stoke, joined me for a rendition of Satin Doll. Up next were regulars Steve Jackson and Keith Eagling with a couple of bossa novas. They were followed by Kev Taylor-Cox who with Andy played Yard Bird Suite and Sunny then Bennet Longman joined Andy and played Stella By Starlight and Days of Wine and Roses. John Gracie, this time on guitar, gave us a rendition of Scott Joplin's The Entertainer. The last two sitters-in were Dennis Holland and Ian Weir. Dennis played Georgia and Ian played Autumn Leaves, both accompanied by myself. Andy and I finished off the evening with a couple of our arrangements for two guitars. Bob, pictured, owner of Bijou, dished out some home made mince pies which were very well received and rounded off another excellent evening of music at Bijou. Trefor Owen.

MAMBO AMP UPDATE
I have now used my MAMBO amp at many different venues and, as stated in previous newsletters, I can honestly say that it is the best amp I have ever played through. I get the sound I want at every venue! I have the tone controls set on flat response and that's it, and for the first time ever for me I don't have to fiddle with the tone controls to find a sound that suits the acoustics of the room. I feel it is the right kind of amp for archtop guitar. Hear it at the next JGC gathering.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<0>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> THE GUZZ PICK. Even when you think you have the perfect plectrum, as I did when I discovered the V pick, there s always something new round the corner! I was introduced to the Guzz pick by Howard Alden and Peter Button. I now use it all the time! The S3 Guzz Pick can be played with three sides - Side 1 For playing solo - Side two and three for playing rhythm. It is 3.5 mm thick, (they are working on a thin version), and produces great tone and I find that the pointed edge is great for single string and rhythm work. Unlike the V pick the Guzz pick has a wonderful grip and will not slip out of your hand. The grip is different on both sides and it has a black rubber spot for added grip. I also find that you can get slightly different tone from the pointed edge dependent on whether the black spot is facing up or down. Here is the website http://www.guzzguitar.com/ If you are ordering the picks online you'll need to know the Spanish for United Kingdom which is Reino Unido. Trefor Owen.

USEFUL LINKS: B M G (Banjo Mandolin & Guitar) Magazine has been revived! Click on the link.
http://www.banjomandolinguitar.org/news.htm This was the only guitar magazine around when I started playing in the 60's. Unfortunately it folded with the death of the editor and has now been revived. It was followed by "Guitar Player" which was great for jazz in its early years. Then there was a British magazine "Guitar" which was dedicated to jazz guitar. Didn't last long! This was followed by "Archtop" which was the forerunner of "Just Jazz Guitar Magazine".
