Myanmar President U Thein Sein met Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday shortly after the latter arrived in Dawei in Myanmar's southern Taninthayi region on a one-day visit, according to official sources. The two leaders discussed the development of Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which is being implemented. They inspected the joint development project and related investment. Yingluck is accompanied by Thai businessmen. It is her first visit to Dawei after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in developing the SEZ in May 2008. Meawhile, Myanmar and Thailand have invited international investors to engage in Dawei SEZ project. A joint declaration was issued in Phnom Penh on the occasion of the 21st Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN) in November, reaffirming that some prioritized projects are set to be completed in 2015. Thailand, on its part, will implement development tasks including roads, deep seaport, industrial zone, power plant, water supply, water treatment system, communication, high speed train in the Dawei SEZ, according to the joint declaration. The joint committee was established by Myanmar and Thailand to speed up the comprehensive development of the Dawei SEZ and its related projects during a visit to Thailand by Myanmar Vice President U Nyan Tun earlier in November. The Dawei SEZ project is being implemented by the Italian-Thai Development Company and six local contractors.
