When you enter Leadership State become a Creator & Stimuli to which others respond THUS bringing about organizational change

Essence of this book: Personal Change must always precede organizational change

NORMAL State

To Enter Leadership State


Its not until people are jolted, that they are willing to make significant changes in WHO they are and & HOW they do things

When people fail to respond to signals of change

Deep Change requires

Letting Go

It is our Hypocrisy and self-focus that drains us. When we become purpose-centered, internally directed, other focused, and externally open we discover Energy we didnt know we had

What do I want Vs What result do I want to create

Move toward purpose

Deep Change = Clear Vision + Elevated Attention X exponential learning

Undergoing this type of CHANGE, allows people to express their uniqueness.

Willingness to share ones uniqueness is a transformational act.makes people better able to help others refine their images of themselves

As You Change NOT everyone going to want to join you


Paradox of Normal State People who ADMIRED for being Driven and seem to sacrifice themselves are
Externally Driven + Internally Closed

Its easier for them to WORD HARD than RISK PERSONAL CHANGE They want to 1. PRESERVE their EGO, 2. Existing Self and 3. Identity they have created

Realize you dont need Control

Become a Catalyst

Expanded awareness give rise to new levels of authenticity = New patterns of influence and change

Less Either Or thinking and MORE Both- And Thinking

Emergent Organizing =Many Leaders

Deep Change is Contagious and NON-Linear

Deep Change is Not Hierarchical

In a normal state people manage change not lead it

Static View = Traits Approach (improve traits =improved leaders) Polar View (More complete and Dynamic) = Contradictory qualities .
Assertive & Compassionate, Spontaneous & Self Disciplined

Competing Values =View Polar view +Dont move into

negative zone or unproductive zone Integrated view = Competing Values + Not Mutually Exclusive

Do whats right even when it might not be pleasurable

Dont Focus on whats wrong because it will limit

attention on readily available solutions Constructive questioning brings forward what people care about and invites

Positive image of the future collaboratively attained

If you dont know where you are going how are you going to get there?

Allows focus on Purpose while providing the freedom

to experiment and be open to feedback about failure as well as successes

MOST difficult of the 8 Practices

Requires transcending the need to CONTROL Become Humble & Open NOT Independent & Strong NOT

Dependent & Weak Arrogant & Closed

Integrate Humility & Strength = High Authenticity & Credibility

7. Responsible Freedom
Internalizing a commitment to continued personal renewal, higher purpose and richer life Achieve Balance

8. Tough Love
Requires simultaneous compassionate & assertive
