Today, security is an issue that cannot be ignored. If the room is accessed by a room maid or other authorized hotel staff, the status is appropriately displayed as 'service' or similar, since the card used by anyone within the complex also carries the information on the user type (guest, room service, maintenance etc). Users don't even need to swipe the badge through the reader installed at the access point the card transmitter is activated when the user approaches the reader and the card is read from a distance. Guests who are not staying in the hotel but are just visiting (for example, participants at a conference), can be issued cards on arrival or in advance. Cards can be pre-programmed to restrict access to certain facilities only.
