CAD QUEST

Maximum no. of participants per Team: 4 Description: Mechnovate 2013(ASME-VIT) in association with AIsquare invites student teams from mechanical engineering & related disciplines to showcase their design skills in the event 'CAD Quest' that is intended to stimulate creativity, innovation, and develop technical presentation skills, and team-building.

Wearable and portable Assistive/Adaptive Hardware Technologies for blind people:

Of all sensations perceived through our senses, those received through sight have the greatest influence on perception. Sight combined with the other senses, mainly hearing, allow us to have a world global perception and to perform actions upon it. For the blind, the lack of sight is a major barrier in daily living: information access, mobility, way finding, interaction with the environment and with other people, among others, are challenging issues.

Problem statement 1:
To travel by walk independently and safely is a herculean task for a blind person. Products like smart electronic blind canes are already available, but are not economic and affordable to common people. So based on this Participants are expected to design product that can assist the blind person in travelling. It can involve devices adaptive to body areas such as fingers, hands, wrist, abdomen, chest, feet, tongue, ears, etc.

CAD QUEST Important aspects to consider are 1.The product should able to detect the obstacle or danger in the walking path of blind person; 2. As soon obstacle or danger is detected, it should able to communicate instantaneously and effectively in a way that is understandable to the blind person; 3. It should also have the capability of navigation facility to find direction and help the blind person reach desired place through GPS or other interfaces; 4.The functionality and working mechanism should be clearly explained; 5. While designing, hear, touch and other sensing capabilities of blind person should be kept in mind;

Problem Statement 2:
Reading books, writing class notes and assignments, sketching, doing calculations, etc., for blind to be able to do these things can make their learning fast and efficient. Participants have to make a design incorporating the latest technologies into this tool to make it as smart and innovative that helps to enhance blind people learning.

Important aspects to consider: 1.The product should be flexible and have note taking capability in braille script; 2.Additional features like audio recording, Printing (in braille), sketching, web browsing and navigation, GPS, etc. are highly encouraged; 3.While designing participants should consider the constraints and comfort of blind person; 4.All features with their working, location of specific part in device, feasibility, cost, etc. should be clearly explained; 5.The device can be add-on or completely new design.

Problem Statement 3:
We are lucky to have been blessed with eyes that could spot out things. We can read things hassle-free, admire at natures beauty. But the blind cant sense things or at least know the current time. Although voice enabled watches came into picture; various new products can also be developed, so that time can be sensed by other means. Participants are expected to design a watch that can be sensed by a blind person through touch.

Important Aspects to consider: 1.The blind person is expected to sense the time by very feeling of raised minute and hour hands with respect to the dots, positioned around the watch; 2.The watch made should be flexible such that a blind person should able to take on or take off from the hand; 3.Materials should be carefully chosen considering the hand constraints and flexibility. Near failures must be avoided; 4.The working mechanism should be clearly explained in the report; 5.Animation of mechanism is highly encouraged. *Note: 1. Teams can choose and work on any one of the problem statements specified above. 2. Teams need not restrict their designs to the above mentioned problem statements, they can come up with their own, provided they are pertaining to the rules. Teams working on other problem statements other than mentioned should write the Title and short description clearly in the beginning of the design report they are going to submit

Description:1) Participating teams should send their own CAD Designs (designed in Solidworks, Catia, Autodesk or Pro-e) with a detailed report containing all the functional aspects of your design. 2) Additional importance will be given to the teams performing appropriate simulation, using green manufacturing concepts and doing Sustainability study.

CAD QUEST 3) Participating teams are expected to use their creativity and innovation to design a CAD model considering all factors such as cost, manufacturability, green technology, etc. 4) Selected teams will be called for the final Presentation round in which they have to explain their designs and its feasibility in detail. 5) After presentation participating certificates will be given to all teams. 6) Prize money will be awarded to the teams with the best design and good presentation.

Judging Criteria: 1) Design Concept & Feasibility 2) Simulation, Cost Analysis, Animation, Rendering, etc. 3) Greener and Sustainable strategies and concepts used 4) Durability and recyclability of proposed model 5) Extra features of the model and multipurpose use if any Based on the above mentioned criteria teams will be selected to the final presentation round.

Rules/Regulations:1) All the participant teams should make their designs using CAD software's such as Solidworks, Catia, Auto Desk or ProE only 2) Participants should submit only their original work. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. 3) In case of any issues or discrepancies, decision of the Judges and organizing committee will be final.

All Designs including design report (with a detailed explanation in word/pdf format) can be mailed to cadquest.mechnovate@gmail.com; last date feb28th.
