Key Points
The Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) decreased by 0.7% in January 2013 in trend terms and is at its lowest level since the series began in January 2006. By contrast, in seasonally adjusted terms, the IVI increased by 2.0% over the month. Over the year in trend terms, the IVI has fallen by 23.2%, with declines recorded in all states and territories, the strongest being in Queensland (down by 32.6%), followed by South Australia (28.5%) and Western Australia (28.0%). The Regional IVI (three month moving average), declined in 37 of the 38 regions over the year to January 2013, and increased marginally in the Blue Mountains (up by 1.7%). The strongest falls were recorded in South West WA (down by 44.4%) and Central Queensland (41.4%).

Internet Vacancy Index Trend Series

In trend terms, the Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) decreased by 0.7% in January 2013 and has declined by 23.2% over the year, to stand at its lowest level since the series began in January 2006. Despite this decline, there were still around 168,300 newly lodged vacancies advertised over the month of January 2013. Over the year to January 2013, vacancies fell in all states and territories, with the strongest decrease recorded in Queensland (down by 32.6%).

Internet Vacancy Index Seasonally Adjusted Series

In seasonally adjusted terms, the IVI increased by 2.0% in January 2013, with rises recorded in seven of the eight occupational groups. Increases were recorded in five states and the ACT with the strongest rise in Victoria (up by 2.7%), followed by New South Wales (2.1%) and Western Australia (1.8%). Over the year to January 2013 the IVI has decreased by 22.0%, with a decline in vacancies across all states and territories.

Skilled Internet Vacancy Index

The Skilled IVI decreased by 1.6% in January 2013, however, six occupational groups increased slightly over the month, with the strongest increase recorded for Information Professionals (up by 2.0%), followed by Transport and Design Professionals, and Architects (1.0%) and Construction Trades (0.5%). Science Professionals and Veterinarians recorded the strongest decrease (down by 10.6%), followed by Engineers (5.7%), and Legal, Social and Welfare Professionals (3.4%). Over the year to January 2013, the Skilled IVI has fallen by 26.2%, with falls recorded across all occupational groups, with the exception of Education Professionals (up by 1.3%). The strongest decline was recorded for Science Professionals and Veterinarians (down by 60.0%), followed by Engineers (45.7%) and Engineering, ICT and Science Technicians (38.9%).

Over the year to January 2013, the number of online vacancies decreased in 37 of the 38 regions (three month moving average), and increased marginally in the Blue Mountains (up by 1.7%). The two strongest falls were recorded in South West WA (down by 44.4%) and Central Queensland (41.4%). Despite the fall in most regions over the year to January 2013, the number of vacancies remains historically high in some regions, such as the mining regions of Pilbara & Kimberley and Goldfields & Southern WA (respectively 295.8% and 104.9% higher than when the series began in May 2010). The Regional IVI is in three month moving average terms, and is not seasonally adjusted and trended. As such, the series contains more seasonal effects than the overall IVI series and should be used with caution.

Explanatory Notes
The monthly Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) is based on a count of online job advertisements newly lodged on SEEK, MyCareer, CareerOne and Australian JobSearch during the month. Duplicate advertisements are removed before the IVI vacancies are coded by DEEWR to occupations based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). The data are seasonally adjusted and trended, and then indexed (January 2006 = 100). The Skilled IVI is based on the aggregation of Professionals and Technicians and Trades Workers. The Regional IVI was first published in September 2010 and back cast to May 2010. The Regional IVI concords vacancies to 38 best fit regions across the States and Territories from the four job boards. Minor changes in the series may occur from month to month due to back casting. The series published each month is the most up to date at the time and overwrites previous data. On 10 June 2012, the Resources Sector Jobs Board was launched on the Australian JobSearch website.
