Do Justice. Love Mercy.

Missional Wisdom is discovered at the intersection of deep contemplation, radical hospitality and service to others.
AMW CE 103 3 CEUs $450 Justice for the Missional Church Objective: To understand the integral relationship of justice and missional community; to explore the meaning of justice within a missional hermeneutic; and to learn to identify injustice in ones local context. Core Learning: Justice is a matter of right relationship with God, self, others, and the rest of creation. Systems and structures conspire to distort and mar these relationships, and thus, to do justice is to expose and dismantle obstacles to right relationship. Learning to truly see unjust systems requires developing a new vision. Four half-hour video lectures Four essay quizzes Text: Walking with the Poor by Bryant Myers Lecture One: Justice as a Missional Practice Lecture Two: Moving from Charity to Justice Work Lecture Three: Uncovering Injustice in Your Neighborhood Lecture Four: Building Just Relationships in Your Neighborhood Faculty: Wesley Magruder, D.Min., M.Div., MWF Director of Missional Community Development

AMW CE 102 3 CEUs $450 Wesleyan Forms of Discipleship Objective: To explore Wesleyan forms of discipleship pioneered by John Wesley in the 18th century, as well as their development since, in order to inspire and challenge leaders to re-think their approach to making disciples of Jesus Christ in their own local context. Core Learning: John Wesleys approach to discipleship consisted of an intentional strategy to move persons from prevenient grace (in societies), to justifying grace (in classes), to sanctifying grace (in bands). Four half-hour video lectures Four essay quizzes Text: Covenant Discipleship: Christian Formation Through Mutual Accountability by David L. Watson

AMW CE 101 3 CEUs $450 Introduction to the Missional Church Objective: To disentangle the concept of missional from the myriad of vague or co-opted uses we often encounter; to develop a deep understanding of missional as theological orientation (who we are) rather than a program or ministry (what we do); to root our understanding of the missional nature of the church in the missional energies of the Triune God; to consider the ways that missional impacts all aspects of the life of faith. Core Learning: Missional Church has become a popular term that can sometimes seem adrift in a sea of trendiness. In this course well wrestle with the substantive theological implications of the term and explore the ways in which a missional orientation is Biblical; theologically, rationally and practically consistent, and more broadly applicable than a special-interest theology. AMW CE 104 3 CEUs $450 Leadership Issues in the Missional Church Objective: To understand the relationship between church structures and organization, and cultivating missional community; to differentiate between mission serving as an organizing principle versus as the priority for a missional community; to explore leadership and discipleship principles which empower the whole community of faith. Core Learning: Whether seeking missional renewal in an established congregation or launching a new missional community, many of the generally accepted leadership assumptions and standard procedures can seem inappropriate or even counterproductive. Yet few resources exist to help guide us through these waters. In this course well explore just a few of the common questions and needs that arise in such contexts. Four half-hour video lectures Four essay quizzes

Coming This Spring . . . Missional Monks: Exploring the Collision between the Missional and Monastic Objective: To understand the development and implications of the missional church and contemporary forms of monasticism; to discover ways in which the monastic stream is strengthened by a well-developed missional orientation; to explore ways in which the missional stream needs the rhythms of monasticism; to cultivate a holistic approach to faith which incorporates the best qualities of both streams. Core Learning: Some mistakenly believe that missional and monastic are, at least in practice, on opposite ends of the theological spectrum. In this course well dispel that myth by exploring the ways in which each not only complements, but protects the other. On their own, each stream is susceptible to their own forms of tunnel vision and imbalanced practice. These pitfalls are avoidable, but require awareness and intentionality. Join the missional movement.

The work of the Missional Wisdom Foundation captures my imagination because the initiative to establish missional communities speaks to this moment in the life of the church that is so ripe for opportunity, so open to resurrections and so full of longing. As I hear about exploring monastic forms for intentional community, about deep worship and justice practices that emerge from community, about pilgrimage as a way for leadership, and about learning for practical holiness, my heart leaps.
