Introduction of Solid State Physics by Charles Kittel 8th Edition, 2005 page 3-11 PowerPoint Slide : Lecture 2 MAK-crystal structure1.ppt from class website http://lms.upm.edu.my
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After studying the materials in this module, students should be able to: 1. Draw and label the structure of crystal in solid 2. List down all crystal classes, structures and describe their differences 3. Identify the characteristics of cubic lattices
AND
You are to read page 5-9 of Introduction of Solid State Physics on Basis and Crystal Structure.
Each group will do the assigned readings and discuss among your group based on a list of questions, issues or statements given LEARNING below. Selected questions or issues will be presented/discuss in ACTIVITIES class.
1. Read the Brief Note: Crystal Structure 2. Read page 5 9 of C. Kittel 8th. Edition 3. Review the power point slides located at the class website (http://lms.upm.edu.my) 4. Pay attention to the following questions or issues for your discussion: a. How do crystal classes differ from each other? b. What is meant by primitive? c. Where is the position of basis in lattice?
Activity 2 (For LO 2 and LO 3) Each group will do the assigned readings and discuss among your group based on a list of questions, issues or statements given below. Selected questions or issues will be presented/discuss in class.
1. Read the Brief Note: Characteristics of Cubic Lattices 2. Review the power point slides located at the class website (http://lms.upm.edu.my) 3. Pay attention to the following questions or issues for your discussion/presentation: a. How to identify the characteristics of each cubic lattice? b. How to calculate the number of nearest neighbor? c. What is packing fraction means?
ASSESSMENT
Distinguish between primitive and non-primitive unit cell? Calculate the atomic packing factor for simple cubic, assuming the atom to be hard spheres.
