18 Skills of the Ninja
Seishin-teki kyy (spiritual refinement) Taijutsu (unarmed combat) Kenjutsu (sword fighting) Bjutsu (stick and staff fighting) Shurikenjutsu (throwing shuriken) Sjutsu (spear fighting) Naginatajutsu (naginata fighting) Kusarigamajutsu (kusarigama fighting) Kayakujutsu (pyrotechnics and explosives) Hensjutsu (disguise and impersonation) Shinobi-iri (stealth and entering methods) Bajutsu (horsemanship) Sui-ren (water training) Bryaku (military strategy) Chh (espionage) Intonjutsu (escaping and concealment) Tenmon (meteorology) Chi-mon (geography)
Centuries ago this warrior needed to train the best possible way for war, to do this they trained in the Ninja Juhakkei (18 skills). Many people say that they are ninja, and claim that they are ninja, but do not completely train in the 18 skills of the ninja. In this, it is to understand that they are not a ninjutsu school, but teach ninja aspects within their curriculum. Do you train in ALL of the 18 Skills? Are you completely a Ninja?

LAST MONTHS KUDEN TRAINING EVENT

TENJIN RYU JUJUTSU

5

Last month we held a Tenjin Ryu Jujutsu Event. The class was really smaill, but the training was not. Since we had students from a wide range of skill and rank we started with some simplet self defense against grabs, knife and gun attacks, from that we moved into more advanced training, throwing and locking. When we started on the ground I gave them submission sets so that they can go from one lock to another lock without stopping. This helps the student train in a fundamental succession as well as teach them how human reaction works and how to move with the flow of the human body. At the end of the Jujutsu training session as always I gave them a chance to do the Rapid Response Training, and try to apply any of the techniques that they learned in the session. Many of them found that they could get a lock with someone trying to lock them out, while others felt that they might need some more practice before they can feel comfortable enough to get the lock. The training session that we had will be on the next Hombu Keiko DVD. For those that have not seen any of the Keiko DVDs yet here is the link! This is a great way for all of you to see how we train and some of the daily teachings of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo! http://cjj2004.tripod.com/internationalbudoryuninjutsusuperstore/id103.html

There is an old saying that says "We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training". These words hold true when you are conditioning yourself as a warrior in the marital arts. I get hundreds of emails every day from people all over the world that ask about training in the ninja arts. I always start with telling them the 7 traditions that are taught within the banner of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo and they get excited. Usually from here the next question is well, how long does it take to get to black belt, and from here I get into the testing protocol of the school and what it takes to be a black belt under the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo. One of the testing rules of the school (outside of the realm of knowing your kata, waza and henka that is required on the level that you on) is a physical test. The reason that each level has the physical test is to test the strength of the mind, body and spirit of the student. How bad do they want it and how much will they take to get it! This is not easy at all. By the time that you get to the black belt exam, you will be doing over 100 pushups, sit-ups, squats, lunges, mountain climbers, countless combinations and repetitions on training bags and focus mitts as well as over 1 hour of sparring, throwing grappling without stopping and at the end of the 60 minute sparring session you have to fight multiple attackers and not loose! I explain how hard that it is to be a black belt in the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo and I get this from everyone; great! That is what I want! I want to not just know the technique. I want to know how to apply it! Well, this is obviously before they actually have to test for a rank. Usually 1 out of every 3 people that get to 7th kyu (3rd level) quit. For the ones that get to brown belt, 1 out of every 2 will quit. When you place people in a situation where they have to press themselves past their comfort zone, you see quickly why so many choose to do Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi and other non-impact and physical martial arts systems.

Anshu teaching Sentry Removal and Survival Skills 2009 Stealth Camp
Here is the reality, they do not want to be good, they want a belt, and I really am not into giving people belts. I see so many marital arts schools that do not do any real physical training; they do not spar, hit the bags or implement resistance training. They do not place their students in the situation of what it is like to feel failure. Why? Failure gives you strength. If you only place your students in the position to only win, what happens when someone places a knife on their throat and they want to kill them? What happens when they get in a real street fight and they never have sparred or tested their skills against another person who is trying to kick their ass and rape them and take their wallet? I can go on and on, but the brutal facts are there are so many teachers that have never even been in a real street fight and do not know what it really takes, yet they have more stripes on their belt than years practiced! This is disrespecting real budo! To all of these teachers out there that practice theory, THEY NEED to apologize to the arts, because when take combat out of the ninja arts, it is NOT ninjutsu! Call it what it is, taijutsu and leave it at that. Do not disrespect fallen soldiers because you are not even strong enough to test your self and make yourself a better combatant and warrior! For those out there that are in these schools and do want this training but do not know where to start, here are a few starter exercises to help you with your training. These drills need to be added to your existing program! Do each exercise 3 sets 15 reps to start.

LEG LIFTS: This is a great exercise that helps in the development of the lower body as well as the lower abdominals. Notice I keep my head up to maintain upper abdominal contraction. Simply lower your legs 1 inch from the floor and life them vertical from you hip. This range of motion will also help the development of connective tissue in the hips, this is great for adding strength and speed to your kicking technique.

BYCYCLES: This is a great total lift for the abdominals. Keep in mind that the abs are the muscles the control the core and protect you from counter attacks, It is also the heart of the movement in many classical ryuha. In this you simply crunch up and twist touching your elbows to your knees. Each leg rotates one up to the elbow as the other goes straight out. The upper movement works the upper abs, the twisting works the obliques and the leg movement works the lower abdominals.

BRIDGE: This is a great core exercise. Many think that the core is the abs, this is not true, the core is all of the muscles that are connected in the middle area of the body. If you draw a line from one part of the belly button all the way around to the other side, all of these muscles are the core. Simply get in the position shown and hold for 60sec. maintain breathing, yet hold flexion in the abdominals, just as though you were in combat, not tense, but ready.

PUSHUPS (ISO): many times in fighting your muscles get tired and you cannot keep your arms up, this is getting in the push up position on your knuckles to help train the bones, and go half way down, hold this position as long as you can, start with 30 sec and keep moving up in time, you want to get to be able to do this for 3mins. If you fight right no fight is close to that length in time, nice to know that you muscles can be completely flexed and working with no rest for that time! 15

Striking the bag is a very fundamental part of martial arts. Nothing can be worse than to train in the arts and to not have trained or conditioned your muscles and bone to be able to take the impact of hitting another person! When you do your bag work, make sure that you add in combinations, foot movement and fast simple strikes as well as hard hitting knuckle smashing bombs! You want to be able to continue through the fighting technique completely for a set duration like 1-3mins. After the 1mins, do one of the core / Ab exercises that are listed above and then move to the 2nd set of on the heavy bag! This is a great workout for the cardiovascular system, abdominal and core conditioning as well as fast and slow twitch muscle fibers. One thing that I think that many marital artists tend to leave out of their curriculum is who is it that is going to pick a fight. You know why in the traditional times schools would fight other schools? BECASUETHEY ARE TRAINED TOO! Most people other than thieves and muggers that you are going to be in a physical altercation with are someone else that trains in the martial arts and wants to test their skills against you! NO ONE ART has more ego (stereotypically) than the MMA FIGHTERS! So knowing that MMA, Kickboxing and such is all over, this is the popular training right now and all of them have egos and want to prove that they are the best, and the only thing that you train for is the mugging on the street you are not factoring in a situation that you might be in! WHY?!? Carrying weapons is one thing, but you know as well as I that if the attacker is empty handed kick boxer ad you pull your gun and shoot him, you go to jail, lethal threat was not present and you killed him! Face it ninjas there are many more times in todays age that you will need your empty hand fighting skills that that of the Sengoku Period, so get in shape, nothing like getting you ass whooped because you want to be lazy with your training and not prepare yourself for anything that could happen! 16

I am a huge traditionalist as far as the martial arts understanding are concerned. I love kata, I love henka, I love the training of the kata and the pursuit of excellence through the movements that has passed down through the traditions that we have at the school. However, just because I am a traditionalist and love the history of the 7 warrior traditions of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo, that does not mean that I am not a realist. Keep in mind that these warriors have passed down these arts to us has done so because they had to fight for the right to live, for the right to love, for the protection of their lord, their family and their village. So with this thought, do not train with blinders on and hold yourself back from the excellence that you are striving for. Add everything that you can to the arts to make yourself better and make others better, this is the path of Budo! In this path of Budo you cannot be scared of change, that is what you are wanting, you want change, you want to better yourself as a warrior and in this bettering of yourself you will see change! So do not be scarred to add Sparing, Grappling and Kumite to your Training! NO I am not saying that you need to compete in senseless karate tournaments and such. NO I am not saying that you need to become a kick boxer or a MMA Fighter. What I am saying that if you truly understand that the kata that we have gives us philosophies and strategies to save our life, if you can look deeper in that method of training, look at that the same way when you add your sparring! In kata it is a fixed movement, henka is a fixed movement off of another fixed movement. No fight is predetermined, it is not fixed. Not knowing what is coming at you, yet you have to move and react. In this reaction you are also developing skills that you cannot get in kata. Not to mention that it is DEVLOPINGYOUR BODY TO TAKE A HIT! DEVELOPING YOUR MIND TO UNDERSTAND THE THREAT AND NOT BE SCAREDTO TAKE A HIT AND DEVELOPING YOUR WARRIOR SPIRIT TO KOW THAT YOU CAN OVERCOME ALL ODDS! This is the part of Budo that many keep out, and you cannot take out the combative aspects and still be a warrior. Here at the school we condition our bodies past the point that we think that we can do, and to the point that we cannot go. We fight, spar, ground fight, hit the bags, weapons training, stealth, survival skills, military strategy, spiritual enlightenment and so much more this list can go on and on. We do ALL OF THIS not just in the name of the school, but also for warrior path that we have chosen to find enlightenment through. Higher Consciousness through Harder Contact, this the warriors way; This is Combat Conditioning; This is Budo. Article was written by Anshu Christa Jacobson headmaster of the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo.
