My Magazine Pop Music - Pop music is a genre of popular music which originated in its modern form in the
1950s, deriving from rock and roll. As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country. Such include generally short-tomedium length songs, written in a basic format as well as the common employment of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and catchy hooks. Throughout its development, pop music has absorbed influences from most other genres of popular music. Early pop music drew on the sentimental ballad for its form, instrumentation from jazz, country, and rock music, orchestration from classical music and recently has started to include tempo from dance music, backing from electronic music, rhythmic elements from hip-hop music, and has recently appropriated spoken passages from rap.

Characteristics of Pop Music:

Pop music is produced to appeal to the broadest-possible audience; its sole purpose is selling records, and not artistic merit or integrity - which can lead to bland, soulless music.

Aims to appeal to a wide audience, rather than any subculture or ideology. Verse-chorus song structure. Recording and production is considered more important than live performance. Usually around 3 minutes in duration. Dance orientated rhythms. Attempts to follow current pop culture trends. Focus on melodies and catchy hooks. Chorus usually contrasts melodically and rhythmically with the verse.
