Dear supporters and friends of Pioneer Courthouse Square,

Today, Pioneer Courthouse Square is at a key point in its nearly 30-year history. After thousands of free public programs, millions of visitors and tireless community volunteer hours, the Board of Trustees of Pioneer Courthouse Square is looking to pave the way to secure our Citys Living Room for the next generation of Portlanders. This ambitious goal would not be attainable without the thriving partnership between Pioneer Courthouse Squares Board of Trustees and the City of Portland. Together, since the Squares inception, we have successfully managed this public asset, elevating it to serve as one of the most award-winning Public Squares in the United States. In partnership, we look forward to meeting the challenges of basic repairs and capital improvements now presented by an aging Square that has been well-loved and highly utilized by its citizens. Amassing the public and private resources to bring about this revitalization will be our organizations focus over the next few years. To this end, we will need everyones help. Pioneer Courthouse Squares Board of Trustees consists of thirty one elected members who serve two consecutive three-year terms. The members are representatives of the Community (10), the Region at-large (10) and Downtown Businesses (10). The City Commissioner in charge of Portland Parks & Recreation automatically serves on the Board. Additionally, the President may appoint non-voting Honorary Trustees and Ex-Officio Trustees with the support of the majority of the Board.

PIONEER COURTHOUSE SQUARE

Pioneer Courthouse Square, Inc. is a non-profit advocacy group charged with activating and enriching the environment of the City of Portlands premiere public Park and gathering space for the benefit of Portlands citizens and visitors. Working in partnership with the City of Portland, the non-profit organization has successfully fulfilled the Parks prominent public role with the help of community volunteers and private sector contributions. In recent years, through this unique public-private management model, the Park has been recognized as one of the most successful public spaces in the United States. Each year the Park is activated by more than 300 programmed event days made possible through citizen-driven initiative and the generosity of private sector sponsors throughout the Portland region. This scope of annual programming contains iconic annualized community traditions and unique once in a lifetime events that reflect the civic role of the Park within its community and the evolving needs of the citizenry that it supports.

Since the Parks grand opening in 1984 the downtown urban landscape surrounding the Park has evolved significantly, as have the needs of the community that the Park serves. As a result, Pioneer Courthouse Square, in partnership with the City of Portland, has identified Vision Goals for the Square. These multi-year goals identify the need for an increase in quality programming, facility replacement needs, and essential on-going maintenance.

VISION GOALS
Goal 1: To continually improve the quality of on-site services and amenities to enrich the Park environment and serve as a magnet for positive behavior. Goal 2: To develop signature event programming that creates a broad community experience uniting the diverse population groupings that share our region. Goal 3: Enrich the public-private partnership with the City of Portland to: Increase the ability to raise funds to support the Park and its operation Clarify and seek agreement on Park maintenance roles and responsibilities Achieve stable operational funding Goal 4: To pursue new program, maintenance and capital replacement revenue opportunities. Goal 5: Establish an effective level of administrative resources for delivery of operating goals, capital improvements and long term maintenance initiatives.

Pioneer Courthouse Square opened as a unique public Park on April 6, 1984, born of Portlanders determination to rejuvenate the heart of their City. The Park was named after its neighbor to the east, the Federal Pioneer Courthouse, and was designed to be the focal point of Downtown. The Park resides at the center of the regional transit system anchoring the central business district with its shopping, office and service sectors which act as attractors for the entire City, State and region.

Sand in the City brings over 450 tons of sand and 4,500 gallons of water to the Square for a sand sculpture design competition. Portlands annual Tree lighting kicks off the holiday season in Portlands downtown. This years 27th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony included a community singa-long with more than 15,000 participants led by Thomas Lauderdale and members of Pink Martini, with members of the Oregon Symphony and the Von Trapp family singers. Portlands tree was illuminated with more than 14,000 multi colored LED lights - spanning 2.5 miles in length and featured a new star on top! This annual event is made possible through the generosity of more than $200,000 in community donations and provides support for school group performances throughout the downtown core during the holiday season. www.thesquarepdx.org

Pioneer Courthouse Square is a City Park, owned by the City of Portland and administered by its department of Parks & Recreation. Pioneer Courthouse Square, Inc., operating as a designated 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is authorized to manage day-to-day operations of the Park by contract with the City as approved by the Portland City Council. After more than two decades of operating on a year-to-year contract, in 2013 Pioneer Courthouse Square will begin a second five-year contract term with the City of Portland through 2018.
