NOTE
This application note does not purport to cover all details or variations in equipment, nor to provide for every possible contingency to be met in connection with installation, operation or maintenance. Should further information be desired or should particular problems arise which are not covered sufficiently for the purchaser's purposes, the matter should be referred to the local Siemens Sales Office. The contents of this application note are not part of an earlier or existing agreement, commitment or relationship. The Sales Contract contains the entire obligations of Siemens. The warranty contained in the contract between the parties is the sole warranty of Siemens. Any statements contained herein do not create new warranties or modify the existing warranty.

DANGER
Converters contain hazardous electrical voltages, Death, severe bodily injury or significant material damage can occur if the safety measures are not followed. 1. 2. Only qualified personnel, who are knowledgeable about the converters and the provided information, can install, start up, operate, troubleshoot or repair the converters. The converters must be installed in accordance with all relevant safety regulations (e.g. NEC, DIN, VDE) as well as all other national or local regulations. Operational safety and reliability must be ensured by correct grounding, cable sizing and appropriate short-circuit protection. All panels and doors must be kept closed during normal operation. Before carrying out visual checks and maintenance work, ensure that the AC power supply is disconnected and locked out. Before the AC supply is disconnected, both converters and motors have hazardous voltage levels. Even when the converter contactor is open, hazardous voltages are still present. When making measurements with the power supply switched on, electrical connections must not be touched under any circumstances. Remove all jewelry from wrists and fingers. Ensure that the test equipment is in good conditions and operationally safe. When working on units that are switched on, stand on an insulating surface, i.e. ensure that you are not grounded. Carefully follow the relevant instructions and observe all danger, warning and cautionary instructions. This does not represent a full listing of all the measures necessary for safe operation of the equipment. If you require other information or if certain problems occur which are not handled in enough detail in the information provided in the Instruction Manual, please contact your local Siemens office.

App Note #4 Field Reversal

I Introduction:
On large drives where reverse operation is only required for jogging or occasional maintenance purposes, a single quadrant armature converter is often used in conjunction with reversing contactors in the shunt field circuit to allow the motor speed to be reversed. In high inertia applications that do not require reverse speed operation it is desirable to reverse the field to allow the drive to brake the load to zero speed to shorten the otherwise long coast stop time. Both of these field reversing applications are supported by the standard 6RA70 drive using external field reversing contactors and are described in the following application guide.

II Description:
This function requires the use of external field reversing contactors: Direction of rotation reversal using Field Reversal Operation: This function is controlled by the binector terminal selected in P580. Changing the logic level of the terminal controlling the "Direction of rotation reversal using field reversal". Two contactors in the field circuit are required to reverse the polarity of the field voltage. The signal level of the binectors (B0260) and (B0261) are defined in an internal operating sequence which will automatically brake to zero speed following the selected ramp rate and accelerate up to speed in the other direction. When the terminal is not energized the forward direction of operation is selected. All of the internal sequencing necessary for the reversal is included in the 6RA70 software. Once the reversal is started with a change in logic state at P580, the operation is latched until the reversal is completed at which time a new reversal can be commanded. For either direction of rotation the speed reference will be positive. Figure #3A & #3B shows a typical installation with a SIMOREG 6RA70 D.C. Drive. Control sequence for reversing by field contactors (direction 1 to direction 2): 1. 2. 3. Drive is rotating in rotational direction 1 (or is at standstill) Logic level of binector controlling the "Direction of rotation reversal using field reversal" changes Internal field reversal process takes place (only if a braking operation has not already been activated by pushbutton function "Braking with field reversal"): 3.1 3.2 3.3 Internal (armature) "Operating enable of field reversal" = 0 initiates wait for armature current IA = 0 and thus armature pulse disable (drive then dwells in operating state o1.4) Field pulse disable" = 1 (also sets K0268=0) Wait for Ifield (K0265) < Ifield min (P394)

Drive brakes and then accelerates in rotational direction 2 (or remains at standstill) Note: If the actual speed value polarity is reversed internally as a result of field reversal, P083 (but not P083=3) is supplied with inverted signal values - this is not shown in the function diagram on Sheet 18 in Section 8. When the ramp-function generator is in use, it is advisable to set P228=0 (no speed controller setpoint filtering). Otherwise, initial braking along the current limit may occur in connection with the actual speed value polarity reversal and setting of the ramp-function generator output (to (reversed) actual speed value (or to value set in P639) in operating state o1.4).

III Braking to Zero Speed:

This function is controlled by the binector terminal selected in P581.This is a momentary pushbutton function that will initiate a field reversal and regenerative braking until the speed is less than the minimum speed (P370). Once the motor has stopped the original field direction is automatically re-established. When the stop is initiated the drive will brake to zero following the selected ramp rate and will automatically stop. To start the drive again the brake command should have been removed and then the start command must be cycled off and then on. Control sequence when entering "regenerative brake stop with field reversal" 1. 2. 3.
