he most often-asked question I have
received so far in 2013: Rabbi, why
is Pesach so early this year? Of course,
it is only early on the civil calendar. It falls
on the 15th of Nisan on the Hebrew
calendar as it does each year. But because we did not have a
leap year (which would have added a month to the calendar),
Pesach this year falls in late March. But you really havent seen
early yet until you look ahead to September, 2013 to see that
Rosh Hashanah is the same week as Labor Day while
anksgiving is also the rst day/second night of Hanukkah
in November, 2013. at being said, we will have a leap month
in the next Jewish year which will move everything back in
place. But I digress.
Rabbis love questions because Judaism is all about asking
questions for that is how true learning happens. Perhaps the
best example of this is that we start the Pesach Seder with the
youngest among us asking questions. In this spirit, I oer a few
insights on questioning from some of my favorite sources.
Questioning is a sign of freedom. Slaves dont ask
questions. To ask a question is to demonstrate ones freedom to
explore, to analyze, to investigate, as well as to question the
symbols, rituals, and philosophies of the Seder experience
(R. Wolfson, FJMC Haggadah).
e Talmud species that asking questions is so important
that even if you nd yourself alone on the Seder night, you should
ask yourself the questions. Even two scholars who know all the
laws of Passover are to ask one another. (Wolfson on Pesachim).
Jewish tradition is lled with the notion that the question
is more important than the answer. We are a people who have
constantly questioned, and every good educator knows that
he/she values a gute kasha (good question). (Shlomo Riskin Hag-
gadah).
Mah Nishtanah reminds us that the Jewish emphasis on
learning is underscored at a very early age. e youngest at the
Seder is given a prominent role as a full participant in the hope
that it will make a meaningful impression on everyone as
children are encouraged to question their elders. In Judaism,
our youngest are supposed to be seen and heard.
I add here just four more questions I hope you will
consider at your own Seders:
If you were told you had to leave home immediately, what
would you take with you?
Would you put a baby in a basket and oat it down a river
lled with crocodiles to perhaps save his/her life?
Why was it so important for the Israelites to put the blood of
the lamb on their doors? Wouldnt God have known to have
the Angel of Death pass over their homes without it?
What is so special about the Prophet Elijah that we invite
him both into our homes on Pesach and after Shabbat each
week during the Havdalah ceremony?
Remember, there are no wrong answers and no wrong
questions. So, ask away as Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan join
me in wishing you a Chag Kasher Pesach a Happy Passover
from our home to yours!

f you love somebody, set them free!
Sting sang in his rst post-Police solo
album, quoting the famous 20th cen-
tury aphorism (author unknown). Indeed,
as we approach the holiday of Passover:
zman cheruteinuthe season of our freedom, we give thanks to
God for Gods love for us and His setting us free. Of course,
the second part of the poem that Sting was referencing goes, If
it returns, its yours. When Moses stood before Pharaoh he did
not merely declare Let my people go, but rather, Let my peo-
ple go so that they may serve [God] (Exodus 9:1). God released
us fromEgyptian bondage not simply to be free, but rather that
in our freedom we would return to serve our heavenly Lord
rather than an earthly one. In this case freedom means our re-
lease from the services of a temporal and oppressive, earthly
monarch so we can serve the loving, forgiving King of Kings.
Are we doing a good job of showing God that we are His?
In Jewish tradition, Gods love is made manifest by His gift to
us of the Torah. Like a devoted parent who instructs his chil-
dren to look both ways before crossing the street and to play
nicely with others, God gave us lifes little instruction manual.
Are we truly listening to our Heavenly Parent? Are we honor-
ing Gods gift of freedom? If you love something, set it free. If
it returns, its yours
As we enter this season of our freedom, let us not only ex-
plore the cabinets of our kitchen for chametz, but let us ex-
plore our lives for how we might deepen our relationship with
and better serve our Creator. Is there one more mitzvahone
more sacred obligationwe can take upon ourselves? How
might we seek to transform our lives by the performance of
these mitzvot? Are we, indeed, returning to God? If you love
somebody, set them free Sting sang decades ago. God did just
that; He set us free. is Passover 5773, let us recall that every
breath [we] take, God is watching us. Let us remember that
God cant stand losing you. And, even and especially in this
hustle-bustle 21st century world, if we return to God in our
vast freedom, we might just nd that we can walk amongst the
elds of gold.

Siyyum BChorim Fast of the Firstborn Monday, March 25, 7:30 a.m.
Firstborns fast on this day in commemoration of the deliverance from Egypt. It is the custom to make a siyyum, a pub-
lic completion of the study of a tractate of Rabbinic literature, following morning services. Since the siyyumis followed
by a sudat mitzvah (a festive meal), a firstborn who is present may eat and not fast. Following Shacharit services,

rabbi. In all cases, capsules are preferred to pills, with or without
chametz binders. Before discontinuing any medication, con-
sult the rabbi and physician.
COSMETICS AND TOILETRIES
All varieties of body soaps, shampoos and stick deodorants
are permitted for use on Pesach, regardless of ingredients.
All types of ointments, creams, nail polish, hand lotions, eye
shadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush, foot and face powders, ink
and paint may be used, regardless of their ingredients.
Colognes, perfumes, hairspray, shaving lotions, and
deodorants that have restorable, denatured alcohol should
not be used. is applies only to products in a pure liquid
state. Lipstick that contains chametz should not be used.
KITCHEN SINK
A metal sink can be kashered by thoroughly cleaning it, then
leaving it unused for 24 hours, and then pouring boiling
water on it. A porcelain sink should be cleaned and a sink
rack used. If, however, dishes are to be soaked in a porcelain
sink, a dish basin must be used.
KASHERING OF UTENSILS
e process of kashering utensils depends on how the utensils
are used. According to halakah, leaven can be purged from
a utensil by the same process in which it was absorbed in
the utensil (ke-voleo kakh poleto). erefore, utensils used
in cooking are kashered by boiling, those used in broiling
are kashered by re and heat, and those used only for cold
food are kashered by rinsing.
EARTHENWARE may not be kashered. However, ne
translucent chinaware which has not been used for more
than a year may be used if scoured and cleaned in hot water.
METAL UTENSILS USEDINFIRE Metal (wholly made of
metal) utensils used in re (spit, broiler) must rst be
thoroughly scrubbed and cleansed and then made hot until
it glows. ose used for cooking or eating (silverware, pots)
must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned and not used for
24 hours. en they are completely immersed in boiling
water. Metal baking utensils cannot be kashered.
GLASSWARE Drinking and serving utensils (plates, serving
platters, etc.) Authorities disagree as to the method of
kashering glass utensils used for drinking and eating. One
opinion required soaking in water for three days, changing
the water every 24 hours. e other opinion requires only
that one thoroughly scrub them or put them through a dish-
washer. Glass cookware includes cookware made of modern
materials that are as non-porous as glass, such as Pyrex.
ere is a dierence of opinion as to whether glass cookware
needs to be kashered. One opinion is that it must be kash-
ered. After thoroughly cleaning it, wait 24 hours. en, boil
water in it that overows the rim, or immerse it into boiling
water. e other opinion is that, only a thorough cleansing
is required. Others believe that glass cookware cannot be
kashered. Glass bakeware, like metal bakeware, cannot be
kashered for Passover.
TABLES, CLOSETS AND COUNTERS
If used with chametz, they should be thoroughly cleaned
and covered, and then they may be used. Note that the
covering material should be made of material that is not
easily torn.
CHAMETZ AND
NON-PASSOVER UTENSILS
Non-Passover dishes, pots and chametz whose ownership
has been transferred to a non-Jew should be separated,
locked up or covered, and marked in order to prevent
accidental use.
For more detailed information, as well as additional categories,

It was with deep sadness that we said goodbye to Rabbi Irwin Groner
(zl) on December 30, 2012. For so many of our member families,
Rabbi Groners many years of leadership, scholarship and friendship at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek helped dene the identity of our shul.
Below are some of the remarks from his memorial service, and a selec-
tion of the many tributes and memorials that came pouring in.
Additional information may be found on the website of the
Ira Kaufman Chapel, www.irakaufman.com.
O
n behalf
of the
past presi-
dents, the o-
cers, the Board
of Directors,
and the entire
congregation, I
oer my deep-
est sympathies
to Leypsa,
David, Amy,
Joel, and the
entire Groner family. Rabbi Groner was
my Rabbi. He ociated at my Bar Mitz-
vah and at my daughters Bat Mitzvahs.
He started me on my path of being active
in the community, and like so many of
us, he connected us to Shaarey Zedek.
I have known Rabbi Groner and the
Groner family almost my entire life. Deb-
bie (zl) and I were classmates at Hillel.
David and Amy are close friends, and
Leypsa continues to oer me support.
Rabbi Groner devoted himself to
CSZ and for that we are all grateful. CSZ
was his life. We all were his family. He al-
ways had time for us. He was our Rabbi,
our friend, our spiritual leader, our
teacher, our advisor, our psychiatrist, all
wrapped into one. He cared about us, he
nurtured us, and he loved us.
He taught us the importance of being
Jewish, the importance of community and
family, the importance of Am Yisrael, the
importance of good deeds, and the impor-
tance of living ethical lives in accordance
with the laws of the Torah. He taught us
by example, by his actions and his deeds,
and of course he taught us by his sermons.
Rabbi Groner was the premier orator
of his generation. His sermons were mag-
ical. ey had a rhythm, a special ca-
dence. ey touched our neshomas and
our deepest emotions. He could make us
cry and moments later he could make us
laugh. He spoke of the human condi-
tion, on issues that impacted and aected
our lives. He could take the most com-
plicated topic or philosophical quandary
and make it understandable. No matter
the topic we always were enriched.
I was fortunate to have spent count-
less hours in his oce, receiving his
counsel and advice and for that I will al-
ways be grateful. He was a great listener,
digested all of the facts and issues, and
then gave his opinion.
Lets not forget his sense of humor,
and his wit. He had the ability,
the gift to make us laugh and
to feel good even in times of
his own personal struggles
and sorrow. Who can forget
some of his humorous say-
ings and I quote. Before I
start my sermon I just want
to say a few words; OR
Im going to tell you a
true story that might have
actually happened; OR
I ociated at your fa-
thers bar mitzvah and
Im not going to com-
pare BUT ANDIt
is that time in the serv-
ice where I have to re-
mind you that there
is no saving of seats,
and I mean it.
Today reminds
me of his sermons.
We cry as we
mourn the loss of
our Rabbi and
our friend. But
we also smile as
we remember his legacy his
deeds and that twinkle in his eyes that re-
minded us that better days are ahead. v

I
begin by noting that
Rabbi Groners es-
teemed seat on the
bimah has been pur-
posefully left vacant
today, and is anked
with a shivah ribbon
as we pay tribute to
his years of service
to our beloved con-
gregation.
And now, I
oer the hallowed
words of the late
Rabbi Irwin
Groner:
Dear God,
We ask not to
be relieved of
our burdens,
but to be for-
tied to bear
them; we ask
not for a
s p o n t a -
neous solu-
tion to our
problems,
but rather
for the
guidance
to meet them with
rmness and under-
standing... You know
how frail we are, how
uncertain is our life.
Our very existence is
in Your hands. An-
other year, and we
grow older along
with it. Life be-
comes more pre-
cious as we sense
times rapid pass-
ing. If only we
could grow in
wisdom as we
grow in
years...Some
of us have
known glad-
ness and ful-
l l m e n t ,
others have
known sor-
row and
d i s a p -
p o i n t -
ment. Some of our lives
have been touched my moments of high
ecstasy, and
some have
been seared by
uns peakabl e
tragedy...Link
our names
with prophets
and sages and
saints who la-
bored to pre-
serve Your teaching. Enable us to
continue their sacred work...We are
humbly and devoutly, Your children.
And let us say: Amen.
My friends, every series of blessings,
prayers and utterances in the Jewish
tradition ends with an entreaty for
Shalom, for peace and tranquility. As the
historic Sages taught, and as Rabbi
Groner well understood, Shalom Rav.
Great and precious is peace! While the
word Rav indeed means great, it is also
the title given to a Rabbi and Teacher.
When I think of Rabbi Irwin Groner, he
was by all accounts not just a Rav, but a
Rav Rav, a truly great Rabbi and a
beloved Teacher who possessed a keen
sense of integrity, dignity and mentch-
lekeit, always living and modeling the
very same words that he preached from
this very bimah week in and week out.
In reality, if anyone was meant to be
a Rav from Bereshit, it was without a
doubt Rabbi Irwin Groner who was born
to serve. It is no exaggeration to say that
it was in his blood to become one of the
nest and most well-respected Rabbinic
leaders of our time. He was simply and
clearly HaRav, the Rabbi, to countless
members of the congregation, and well
beyond, as he embraced this role fully,
completely and so very proudly. Rabbi
Groner taught us all how to live con-
dently as Jews and as human beings cre-
ated in Gods image.
Sarah, as you explained, your baby
brother was a serious student from the
beginning, and you marvelled at his bril-
liance. You, your parents, the late Max
and the late Beatrice, and your siblings,
the late Rabbi Benjamin, the late Rabbi
Oscar, the late Julius, the late Morton
and the late Ruth, all knew intrinsically
that your youngest brother was someone
special and destined for greatness early
on. He was exceptionally sharp, clever,
fun-loving, and he possessed a deep wis-
dom well beyond his youthful years.
Rabbi Groner was well-liked and well

thought-of, in part because he was kind,
compassionate and genuine, oering that
same characteristic sincerity and authen-
ticity to family, friend and stranger alike.
e tale of how Rabbi and Leypsa
met is denitely worth telling, and I as-
sure you, I got permission from Leypsa
rst! As the story unfolds, Rabbi Groner
was enrolled both at the University of
Chicago, where he was pursuing a degree
in psychology, and in Yeshiva at Hebrew
eoretical College. Well, Leypsa was at-
tending Roosevelt University and heard
about a party in Spring 1953, that was
being given next door to her parents, a
party that the Rabbinical students were
going to attend. Now all of the Ortho-
dox girls were talking about this brilliant
student named Irwin Groner whom
Leypsa decided she just had to meet.
Leypsa, you met Rabbi and were in-
stantly attracted to his personality. And
the more you talked, the more you
wanted to be with him. He was bright,
attractive, charming, and you loved his
smile. You were so happy that he asked
you out again, and so you continued to
date. en, in November 1953, Leypsa,
you did the unthinkable! You took pub-
lic transportation across town from the
South side to the North side. But the un-
thinkable part was that you marched
yourself into the mens yeshiva, because
you wanted to have a little talk with the
Rabbi. Whatever you said clearly
worked, because by the end of the talk,
you were engaged. You were married on
January 31, 1954at your parents home in
Chicago, and for just short of six
decades, you and the Rabbi have shared
unconditional love, support, respect, loy-
alty, and you were without hesitation
each other's rock. Leypsa, you stood by
Rabbis side to the very end!
You were true partners who main-
tained a deep commitment to one an-
other and to your children, David and
Amy, Joel and Debbie of blessed mem-
ory. You always felt privileged and grate-
ful to be Rabbi Groners wife, and
amongst your most joyful experiences
each week was sitting and listening to the
Rabbi deliver a sermon. As it was for
you, it was truly an honor and a privilege
for each of us to listen to Rabbi Groner
artistically weave his thoughts and con-
cepts together, thinking carefully before
he spoke, and then speaking from his
heart as we listened intently.
We marveled at how his words were
always measured, well-chosen and in-
sightful, and invariably somehow they
would help us navigate the exact issues,
concerns and challenges were facing at
that very moment. And we appreciated
that he innately understood the depth of
the human condition: our strengths, out
weaknesses, our limitations, and our
temptations.
Rabbi was also king of the one-liner,
whose delivery of humor or a joke at
exactly the right second, executed with
perfect intonation was, and is, un-
equaled. Rabbis incredible wit also al-
lowed people to be put at ease while
drawing them in, serving as a con-
duit for contact with him on a very
deep and profound level.
Likewise, we could talk person-
ally to Rabbi Groner and he
would just get it. You could never
ask him a question that wouldnt
elicit a meaningful answer. And
countless religious leaders across
denominations and faiths saw
this too, and so they trusted
him and looked up to him. I
mention in particular Rabbi
Groners very special relation-
ship with Adam Cardinal
Maida as they were honored
together with the Dove
Award. It should be noted
that Rabbi Groner also
made an historic visit to
the Vatican just 20 years
ago.
Of course, another
career highlight for
Rabbi Groner was
being elected President
of the Rabbinical As-
sembly, for in so
doing, not only did
he bring great honor
to our shul, but an
unprecedented 80-
plus Shaarey Zedek
members traveled
to Concord in
1990 to see Rabbi
Groner inducted
into the Presi-
dency.
And now, as
we come to-
gether in sad-
ness this hour
to reect on
our profound loss, I oer the
timeless words of our tradition as we say

Shalom Rav, Goodbye Rabbi. Shalom to
a profoundly brilliant man who com-
manded respect, and likewise received
tremendous respect from everyone he en-
countered.
We say Shalom Rav to a man who was
extremely real and all-embracing, who
naturally felt other peoples pain and joy
as if it were his very own, and who never
tired of helping people to accept, to cope
and to grow.
We say Shalom Rav to a man who
worked hard and set very high standards
for himself.
We say Shalom Rav to a man who
showed us by example how to follow our
hearts. at was the advice he gave me
when I rst came to Shaarey Zedek al-
most 15 years ago when he sent me to
meet with a family who had just lost
their baby. Rabbi explained to me that
there are no words to mitigate their pain.
He said, just be fully present with the
family and do what feels right. It was the
best rabbinic advice I could ever have
asked for at the time, and words that I
continue to hold dear. It was a tremen-
dous honor to learn from Rabbi Groner.
He was my teacher, and we will never
forget how his door was always open, as
was his heart and his soul.
And so this hour we say Shalom Rav
to a man whose presence was larger than
life itself. We say Shalom Rabbi, Shalom
to our esteemed Rav Rav, our wonderful
Rabbi, and our honored teacher, as he
now assumes his rightful place in the
Olam HaBah, the World to Come.
Rabbi, we will never forget your impact,
your inuence, your inspiration, and
your unconditional love. Shalom Rav,
rest in peace Rabbi Groner. HaRav Mor-
einu Yizchak ben Matityahu, and know
your precious and cherished memory will
be an abundant blessing from heaven,
this day and forevermore. Kein Yehi Rat-
zon. So may it be the Almightys will.
And let us say: Amen. v

lthough Im
fairly certain he
would not have
been thrilled about
the occasion, I am
sure my
father would
have been
pleased to see
the synagogue
so full... when
its not even
Yom Kippur.

part of him,
and he was
a part of it.

a young

rabbi in
1959,
through his

ing Rabbi Adlers murder, through his
taking senior rabbi
status, the shul and
my father each de-
ned the identity
of the other. Like
conjoined twins
sharing one heart
and one purpose,
they could not be
separated. It is so
tting and proper that we are here today,
in his synagogue, on this occasion.
My father was the son of Max and
Beatrice Groner, the youngest of seven
children. Now only his sister Sarah is still
alive. Aunt Sarah told me my father was
so smart and so sweet, even as a young
child. She helped raise him, and he was
unlike any child she had ever seen. He
had an enormous vocabulary, and to stay
busy on the bus in those days, he would
study the Gemara. Clearly, his love of
learning reaches way back to his childhood.
When he was graduated from
rabbinical school in Chicago, he moved
to Little Rock, Arkansas where he served
as the rabbi at a small shul, until coming
to Shaarey Zedek as I already mentioned
in 1959. And then, when he assumed the
role of permanent rabbi upon Rabbi
Adlers tragic and untimely death, my
father guided this congregation through

those dark hours, with strong leadership
and words of comfort and prayer.
You see that was my father. Being a
rabbi was his calling. He loved being a
rabbi, and he loved this congregation.
ats why we all feel a great sense of loss
today. My dad played an important part
in so many of our lives spanning multiple
generations. Whether it was a happy or
sad occasion my dad was always there for
us. He considered the entire Shaarey
Zedek family as his own.
Over the years so many of you have
told me how much they miss Rabbi
Groner and his words, that no one gave
a sermon like Rabbi Groner. Whether
delivered in written form or from the
bimah, his mastery of prose captivated
his audience with eloquence, articulation,
and profound insight, which resonated
with his message of faith and God.
My father was driven by his humanity
and his belief, and his sermons conveyed
that. Often they were a call to action, to
be a better Jew, to be a better human
being. His words carried conviction and
persuasion. Sometimes they challenged
our beliefs about ourselves, but they al-
ways taught, comforted, and guided us.
Although my dads, Irwins, Rabbi
Groners, voice and presence will be
missed, we are grateful for the years he
was granted, for the devotion he showed
to our family, for the love and respect he
gave and received, and for the wisdom he
imparted to all whom he touched. We
will honor his spirit and message by liv-
ing the virtues and spreading his com-
passion to those around us.
We meant the world to my father,
and he meant the world to us his fam-
ily and while these last years have been
so dicult for him, we remember him
now in his stronger days, standing here,
addressing the congregation, doing what
he loved most: being a rabbi, and, more
importantly, being the rabbi here.
William Shakespeare wrote in
Hamlet (Act II, scene ii):
What a piece of work is a man! how
noble in reason!
how innite in faculty! in form and
moving how express and admirable!
in action how like an angel!
in apprehension how like a god! the
beauty of the world! the paragon of
animals!
Yet, it is so utterly frustrating that
however innite in faculty humans are,
we still have a dicult time dealing with
death. We try to reason with it, excuse it,
justify it, fear it, and curse it, perhaps be-
cause it is something we cannot compre-
hend and we cannot control. It leaves us
standing in awe of Gods power, and re-
minds us that we have to accept his judg-
ment and his plan, even though we
cannot possibly understand it. When we
mourners begin the ritual of reciting
kaddish a sanctication of Gods name
said in memory of a deceased relative
we never mention death or the deceased.
We emphasize the grandeur and glory of
God as we try to come to terms with the
unfathomable. It oers us comfort and
reassurance in a world suddenly turned
topsy-turvy.
My father appreciated Shakespeares
works, so let me quote another one. At
the end of Julius Caesar, Brutus was de-
scribed as one whose
...life was gentle, and the elements
So mixd in him that Nature might
stand up
And say to all the world is was a
man!
Julius Caesar, Act V, scene v
(emphasis supplied)
at same de-
scription could be
said of my father.
His life was gentle,
and he had so many
elements to him, so
many interests, so
many elds of
knowledge that
appealed to him,
that Nature
might stand up
and say to all
the world is
was a man!
My family
and I would
c e r t a i n l y
agree: is
was a man!
He taught
us so much
about life,
and now
he has
taught us

death. But
in his role as rabbi, he
spent his life teaching so many others,

and now we all join to mourn his
passing.
While my father certainly appre-
ciated Shakespeare, his life was ded-
icated to his family and to his role as
a rabbi. So, perhaps a better way of
dening the man can be found in
Jewish literary sources. In fact, its
one of the many bits of wisdom
from my father, and he included it
in a sermon or two. e Talmud re-
lates (and Im going to say it in He-
brew so you can hear the assonance
of the words, the beauty of how they
ow together) that:
:
Amar Rav Ilai -- Rabbi Ilai said
:
Bishloshah dvarim adam nikkar
A man is known by three things

Bkoso, uvkiso, uvkaaso -- By his
cup, his pocket, and his anger.
(Eruvin 65b)
I can almost hear my father
quoting this passage.
A man is known by three things:
koso, kiso, and kaaso by his cup, by
his pocket, and by his anger.
Bkoso by his cup: Was he hos-
pitable to others? Was he available to
his ock? Was he warm? Aable?
Did he emulate God by providing
food to the hungry? Did he drink to
excess? Could he be trusted?
My father was all of this. He was
a trusted advisor to so many. His
door was always open to all who
were in need. He was an excellent
conversationalist with a command
of so many subject areas that it
seemed to me that he could speak
authoritatively on almost any topic.
And yet he was so humble you
wouldnt have known that he could.
Bkiso by his pocket. What did
he do with his money? Did he spend
it wisely? Did he spend it on others?
Did he support charitable institu-
tions? Was he kind and generous?
Did he have to be asked twice to do-
nate to help others? Did he have to
be asked at all?
My father was generous with
everything that he had. He spent his
life trying to improve the lot of oth-
ers, and there was no limit to how
he would do so.
Bkaaso by his anger. What
made him angry? What riled him
up? Was he easily appeased? Did he
bear a grudge? What could rile a
person up to get him motivated
enough to take action to right a
wrong, or to x an injustice?
My father was a crusader for
truth, and he was motivated by a
Biblical sense of social justice. He
wanted to help make the world a
better place for everyone, and he
wanted to make it more user-
friendly for Jews. He also helped
make Judaism more user-friendly for
his congregation and for so many
others. He edited an updated ver-
sion of the High Holiday prayer
book and Chumash the Five Books
of Moses bringing old ideas up to
date in clear, modern language,
making the religion of our ancestors
available and relevant to people
today. at High Holiday prayer
book and that Chumash are in wide-
spread use in synagogues through-
out North America.
And, if I may be so bold, I would
like to add a fourth k to the three
k-words the rabbis proposed. I
would add: bkiso, by his chair.
What position did he occupy, and
how did he relate to it? Was he hum-
ble? Modest? Did he use his position
for one of personal gain? Did he re-
spect others? Did others respect him?
I think this is an area where his
nature truly shined. He was modest
and humble to a fault. As the Wiz-
ard of Oz said to the Tin Man, A
heart is not measured by how much
it loves, but by how much it is loved
by others. And my father was
beloved by so many, as your pres-
ence here today attests. My fathers
civility, humility, and optimism
touched everyone he met. And be-
cause of this, he was able to tran-
scend ideological boundaries with
other faiths and other community
leaders, to strengthen the kinship of
mankind.
Even years after his retirement,
that spark never left him, and people
still looked up to my father with the
utmost reverence and respect. He
was a moral authority in the com-
munity whose legacy lives on. He
never held a grudge, never had a
mean word to say about anyone, and
he was always concerned about the
people in his life.
ere is a saying that God never
tests an individual with more than
their character can handle. If this is
the case, then my fathers character
and commitment was champion.
Even in the face of personal suer-
ing and the diculty he faced with
the progression of his disease, dad
was never bitter, was never cynical,
and never lost the commitment of
his calling. His love, devotion, and
faith never wavered. He was never
angry with God.
Modern medicine with Gods
help can perform miracles. But no
one lives forever, and my fathers
time on Earth has now come to an
end. rough every procedure and
test and probing, my father always
said he wasnt in pain. We hope that
that was true and not just his being
stoic to protect us. His staunch de-
termination to continue living was a
tribute to his love of his family, life,
and God. But no matter how hard
he fought, life and death are matters
that lie in Gods hands, and God,
whose reasons are unknowable to us,
decided that my fathers time had
come. My father would have cer-
tainly accepted that decision, no
matter how much he would want to
stay, and now we his surviving
family members, his congregation,
and all who loved him, must accept
Gods judgment as well.
We would like to thank Dr. Her-
shel Sandberg for the many years of
care he provided my father as his
personal physician. We are also so
thankful to the medical sta at
Beaumont Hospital, and we want to
oer a public acknowledgement and
personal thank you to Dr. Sandy
Schochet, who led my fathers out-
standing medical team with profes-
sionalism and compassion. I also
want to take a moment to thank my
dads caregiver, Marek Stepniak who
took care of my father with a kind-
ness, respect, and reverence that will
never be forgotten. You all acted
with the utmost dignity and respect
in caring for my father.
Yes, this was a man. He was a
great father, a great husband, a great
leader, and a great rabbi. He will be

deeply missed. My mother was his
biggest fan, and my sister Debbie,
my brother Joel, and I were his
greatest cheerleaders. When Debbie
died, we all hurt, yet my father
somehow found the personal
strength to deliver the eulogy, crying
in private, but maintaining compo-
sure and strength in public. Despite
such a loss, he never lost faith in
God, and never lost faith in humanity.
My parents were married for 60
years. If my dad was the sail that
propelled the ship that was the
Groner family, then my mom was
the captain. She not only managed
the household, she raised the family,
and created the home. My mom and
dad had a partnership in every sense
of the word and she stood
beside him in everything that he did,
including looking out for the well
being of the congregation.
Now my mother must adjust to
a life without her life-partner. Joel
and I now must rely on each other
and on my mother for those words
of fatherly wisdom we need. My
mother, brother, and I take some
comfort in knowing that he is now
together with our beloved Debbie,
whose soul God called home after
too short a time on Earth. Now fa-
ther and daughter are re-united, and
with that knowledge we can bid
farewell to my father, Rabbi Irwin
Groner. e end has come. God has
called Rabbi Groner to the olam
haemet, to the world of truth, the
world of eternity, the world of peace.
My dad is at peace.
, .
Go in peace, Dad. We love you. v
To our Dear Shaarey Zedek Family,
Words alone cannot adequately express our heartfelt appreciation for all
you have done providing us with comfort during our Shiva and Shloshim
for our revered Rabbi Irwin Groner.
We are overwhelmed by those who called, visited, provided us with 4
Star Quality Kosher meals, warm letters, generous donations, and the
planting of trees in Israel.
A special thank you to Steve Margolin, president, and the ocers and
members of the Board.
To Shirlee Marshall, the loyal and devoted secretary to Rabbi Groner
for 29 years, to Rabbi Joseph Krako and Rabbi Aaron Starr, Cantor
Meir Finkelstein and Assistant Cantor Leoanerd Gutman, your caring,
your concerns and the memories you shared are a continuing source of con-
solation.
To us, the Rabbis dignied presence was powerful and we are moved by
your stories of how he touched and changed your lives with his brilliance,
insight and wisdom in all matters of mind and heart. Shaarey Zedek was
such a signicant part of his life. We are deeply moved that the feeling was
mutual.
May his memory continue to be a blessing to you, your familes,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, and the Jewish people everywhere.
ZecheR tZaddik LvRacha
On behalf of David, Amy, Joel, and Sarah Barach

Mazel Tov!
from your Shaarey Zedek Family
For the past several months,
members Martha and Gerald
Pergament have been valuable
volunteers in the CSZ Archives.
According to Judy Cantor,
synagogue archivist, the work
of the Pergaments has made
the Archives an even more
organized and more usable
resource.
Used extensively during our 150th celebration year,
the Shaarey Zedek Archives, with its large collection of
photographs and documentation, serves as the
irreplaceable repository of synagogue and community
history.
More volunteers are needed in the Archives. If you
would like to help, please call 248/357-5544 and
leave your name with the synagogue receptionist to join
our team. Your work will make a dierence!

ere is no question more central to life, perhaps, than what happens when it ends. Many grew
up learning little to nothing about what Judaism teaches regarding the afterlife. Why? What does
Judaism teach about Heaven and Hell; the nature of the soul; bodily resurrection, the messianic
era, communing with the dead; the importance to the deceased of kaddish; and why are many
liberal Jewseven rabbisafraid to discuss it?
