THE ADVANTAGES OF UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

1 he word Education' has been derived from a Latin source. It means to draw out True
education indeed is the drawing out of the mental faculties, not a mere putting in of so
much knowledge.

In the true, University education means education received in a regular and recognized
institution in the regular and recognized course of studies. In other words, it mean formal
learning. Taken in the strict sense, it means completing the graduation course of studies.

Cardinal Newman in his article, "The ideal of a university agrees with the popular
conception of University that -it is a place where students acquire much knowledge on
many subjects. But he disagrees with the idea of amassing of knowledge alone. He admits
that knowledge is the indispensable condition of the expansion of mind and the
instrument of attaining it, but it is not everything.

The end of liberal education, in Newman's view, is not mere knowledge considered in its
matter, in his opinion the business of a college or University is to train the minds and
intellects of its students in such a way as to make them perfectly healthy. He insists upon

intellect as the one and the only end that a true university should deep before itself. He
calls this intellectual culture by several names, Sometimes he names it, philosophy,
sometimes enlargement of the mind, sometimes intellectual illumination.

view, a University in its bare idea, is not concerned with either moral impression or
mechanical production. It may not exercise the mind either in art or in duty. But it has
given its students intellectual culture; it has done its work. It should educate the intellect
to reason well and satisfactorily in all matters. It should enables its alumni to move
towards truth and ultimately to grasp it.

Cardinal Newman takes care to distinguish between Liberal Education and Useful
Education, he continues that the philosophical temperament that is developed in us by a
university, teaches us that research and system are ends in themselves distinct and apart
from the effects that they may produce. The true University teaching may not result in
our leaning any definite art. But it does help us in holding as our idea the discovery and
contemplation of truth.
