Plumbing
Plumbing the art and technique of installing pipes, fixtures, and other apparatuses in buildings for bringing in the supply of liquids, substances and/or ingredients and removing them; and such water, liquid and other carriedwastes hazardous to health, sanitation, life and property pipes and fixtures after installation Plumbing includes all the piping and fixtures that provide water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and laundry; as well as a means of disposing of wastewater.

History
Since the dawn of civilization plumbing and sanitation has been part of human lives. All human beings, regardless of culture and race had been practicing the act of disposing waste since time immemorial. Historians, in their attempt to trace the history of plumbing, events which had brought about changes that led towards the plumbing system that we know today, had painstakingly devised records of chronological events. During the Roman Empire (500BC - 455AD), enormous concerns on the field of sanitation and plumbing had been observed those times. Aqueducts were built to convey water from sources to houses. Extensive underground sewer systems were constructed. Notable among these developments is the construction of underground public water supply system made of cast lead sections. Public baths had proliferated; one particular example is the Bath of Diocletian, a bath that could accommodate 3,200 bathers at one time. These baths were lines with ceramic tiles. In addition. Roman bathhouses also include large public latrines, sometimes with marble seats. The quality of plumbing declined after the fall of the Roman Empire in AD.. 476. During the middle ages, people disposed of waste materials by throwing them into the streets. !n 1500's, a type of water closet was developed. Septic tanks were introduced in the mid-1800's, and a modern sewerage system began operating in London in the 1860's.

The Plumber
The plumber is the one who works or engages in the business of installing in buildings the pipes fixtures and other apparatus for bringing in the water supply and removing liquid and waterborne wastes. There are three categories of plumbers based upon their graces of experiences. They are: 1. Apprentice plumber- a beginner at the trade who usually serves for 3 to 5 years as helper to a journeyman. 2. Journeyman plumber- has served his apprenticeship and is competent to perform the tasks of installing and repairing plumbing. 3. Master plumber- a person technically and legally qualified and licensed to practice the profession of master plumbing without limitations in accordance with Republic Act 1378, having passed the examinations conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), has received a certificate of registration from the board of master plumbing and possesses the current license to practice. Plumbing Career

Pipelayers - dig and level trenches to lay pipes for drainage, sewer, water, or gas systems underground. Typically pipelayers receive training on the job. Due to the nature of the work, cement, clay, iron, or plastic pipes are used to prevent decay.

Pipefitters - install, maintain and fix low and high pressure pipes for commercial hydroelectric power plants, factories, or central air conditioning and heating. Some states require pipefitters to be licensed. Steamfitters

Steamfilters - A type of pipefitters, steamfitters install pipes used to transport materials like gases that are very high pressured. Stimulus plans backing the building of new infrastructures create a current and future demand for steamfitters.

Sprinklerfitters - Another type of pipefitters is a sprinklerfitter. They specialize in putting automated sprinkler system in buildings for fire alarm systems. Proposed construction code changes set for 2011 requiring the installation of fire sprinkler systems in residential building, creates a demand for qualified sprinklerfitters.

Water Supply System

A system in plumbing which provides and distributes water to the different parts of the building or structure, for purposes such as drinking, cleaning, washing, culinary use, etc.; it includes the water distributing pipes, control devices, equipment, and other appurtenances. Drainage System - All the piping within a public or private premises which conveys sewage, rainwater or other liquid wastes to a point of disposal. A drainage system does not include the mains of public sewer systems or a private or a public sewage treatment or disposal plant. Sanitary Drainage and Vent Piping System - The sanitary drainage and vent piping system are installed by the plumber to remove wastewater and water-borne wastes from the plumbing fixtures and appliances, and to provide circulation of air within the drainage piping. Sanitary Drainage Pipes - Pipes installed to remove the wastewater and water-borne wastes from plumbing fixtures and convey these to the sanitary sewer and other point of disposal. Ventilation System - A system of pipes, fittings and other devices installed for the purpose of providing circulation of air and creating balanced atmospheric condition within the system thereby preventing siphonage and backpressure. Soil Pipe - A pipe that conveys the discharge of water closets or similar fixtures containing fecal matter, with or without the discharge of other fixtures to the building drain or building sewer. Waste Pipe - A pipe that conveys only liquid waste free of fecal matter.

2 Types of Plumbing Systems

Water Supply System Drainage, Waste, and Venting (DWV) Carries away wastewater and solid waste from bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. This subsystem is not under pressure, and must be properly vented to prevent wastewater form entering the drinking water supply. Water Supply System laundry. This is a 2 pipe system. Cast iron pipe is a pipe which has had historic use as a pressure pipe for transmission of water, gas and sewage, and as a water drainage pipe during the 19th and 20th centuries. It comprises predominantly a gray cast iron tube and was frequently used uncoated, although later coatings and linings reduced corrosion and improve hydraulics. Cast iron pipe was superseded by ductile iron pipe, which is a direct development, with most existing manufacturing plants transitioning to the new material during the 1970s and 1980s. Little cast iron pipe is currently manufactured.

Asbestos cement (AC) pressure pipe is used primarily for potable water, as well as for sewer force mains and industrial effluent and process piping.

Asbestos pipe insulation is not uncommon in homes that have asbestos insulation in the walls or the siding. Asbestos was widely used in the construction industry in part because it was inexpensive but also because it was effective

Bituminous fiber Sewer Pipe is the cheapest among the sewer pipes. This type of pipe is light in weight, slightly flexible which could take slight soil movement without danger of cracking or pulling out from its joint. However hot water or other chemical flow may soften or damage the pipe.

Vitrified Clay Pipe (VCP) is pipe made from clay that has been subjected to vitrification, a process which fuses the clay particles to a very hard, inert, glass-like state. VCP is commonly used insewer gravity collection mains because of its reasonable price and resistance to almost all domestic and industrial sewage, particularly the sulfuric acid that is generated by hydrogen sulfide, a common component of sewage. Only hydrofluoric acid and highly-concentrated caustic wastes are known to attack VCP. Such wastes would not be permitted to be discharged into a municipal sewage collection system without adequate pre-treatment.

Lead Pipe is also one of the oldest plumbing materials used by the Egyptians, the Greek and the roman builder as soil and waste pipe. Lead is highly resistant to acid and is suitable for underground installation but

Galvanized Steel Pipe is made out from mild steel, drawn through a die and welded, cast into 6.00 meters long. This type of pipe is easily corroded by alkaline and acid water. The carbonic acid in water, Attack the zinc coating and ultimately the steel itself. It is subject to deposits of salt and lime that gradually accumulate and finally choke the flow of water. This pipe is deteriorating faster when used as hot water supply line.

Galvanized Wrought Iron Pipe is better in quality than the steel pipe for plumbing installation. Test showed that wrought iron pipe is more resistant to acid waste than the steel pipe.

Brass Pipe is one of the most expensive types of pipe. Brass pipe is an alloy of copper and zinc. When the proportions are about equal, the pipe tends to corrode in spots, so all good brass pipe now made is 67% to 85% copper and the rest is zinc. The best grade is 85% copper and is called red brass pipe. Water, unless soft or containing ammonia has little effect on brass pipe.

Copper Pipe is a durable and extremely corrosive resistant material. It is easy to install compared with other types of pipe. Copper pipe is classified into three types, depending upon its wall thickness.

Plastic or Synthetic Pipes is a new concept in the field of plumbing. It was introduced in the Philippines at the early part of 70s, although this type of materials was developed in Germany in the mid year of 1935.

Types of Rigid of Plastic Pipes are: o PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the most common form of household sewer and vent pipe, and is white or gray in color. The 8-foot pipe sections come in diameters ranging from 1 1/2 to 4 inches, and join together with PVC couplings, primer and cement. The couplings come in angles of 30, 45, 60, 90 and 180 degrees (straight), and also include T couplings which join one pipe to another. PVC pipe is simply sawed to length using a handsaw, circular saw or miter saw. o ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is also used for household sewer/vent pipe, is black in color and available in the same diameters as PVC. Pipe sections join together with ABS couplings and cement, though unlike PVC no primer is needed. Local building code regulations usually

21 MIRANO MOSTRADO PAZ SAN GABRIEL SANTIAGO TUMACDER

PLUMBING REPORT

TERMINOLOGIES, WORKS AND CODE

CE42FB3

dictate whether PVC or ABS can be used for sewer/vent installation, though as the two pipes have different expansion rates, they should never be installed together in the same pipeline. o CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) has very similar properties to PVC, though its ability to withstand fluid temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius makes it ideal for water supply pipes. The pipe generally comes in 1/2- and 3/4-inch diameters, and joins together with couplings, primer and cement. As the pipe is generally cut to length using a tube cutter, the installation process is far simpler and less time-consuming than installation of copper water pipes, which require soldering. o Polyethylene (PE) is a flexible pipe which is used in garden irrigation systems, in-floor radiant heating systems and waste disposals. Available in rolls of various lengths, the pipe is easily cut with a tubing cutter, with the sections joining together using barbed male-ended fittings and clamps. The pipe's flexibility requires fewer 90-degree elbow fittings, and it costs less than other types of pipe to install.

Plumbing Fixtures

Trench Drain (also channel drain, line drain, slot drain, linear drain or strip drain) is a specific type of floor drain containing a dominant through- or channel-shaped body. It is used for the rapid evacuation of surface water or for the containment of utility lines or chemical spills.

Water fountain or drinking fountain is designed to provide drinking water and has a basin arrangement with either continuously running water or a tap. The drinker bends down to the stream of water and swallows water directly from the stream. Modern indoor drinking fountains may incorporate filters to remove impurities from the water and chillers to reduce its temperature. In some regional dialects, water fountains are called bubblers.

Showers are most commonly stall showers or showers over a bathtub. A stall shower is a dedicated shower area which uses a glass door to contain water spray. The shower over a bathtub saves bathroom space and enables the area to be used for either a bath or a shower and commonly uses a sliding shower curtain to contain the water spray.

Septic tank is a receptacle or vault used to collect or ganic waste discharge from the house sewer. The main function of a septic tank is to liquefy and precipitate solid waste purifying odorous materials.

Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater and household sewage, both runoff (effluents), domestic, commercial and institutional. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. Its objective is to produce an environmentally safe fluid waste stream (or treated effluent) and a solid waste (or treated sludge) suitable for disposal or reuse (usually as farm fertilizer). Using advanced technology it is now possible to re-use sewage effluent for drinking water, although Singaporeis the only country to implement such technology on a production scale in its production of NEWater.
