Reading and Writing Skills Assessment PIE Level 4

Spring 2013, Week 4

The purpose of this test is to see how much vocabulary and grammar you know, how much you understand what you read, and how well you have learned the writing skills covered in class.

The test will take about 40 minutes.

Try to answer every question.

PART 1: READING COMPREHENSION (15 minutes)

Read the entire passage. Fill in the letter of the best answer on your answer sheet. What Marijuana Does to You By Scott Isbell Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the world. A survey conducted in 2007 found that 14.4 million individuals in the US alone had smoked marijuana at least once during the previous month. It is usually smoked as a cigarette (called a joint), but may also be smoked in a pipe. Sometimes, it is mixed with food or brewed as tea. Furthermore, it can be combined with other, more powerful drugs, such as crack cocaine. When a person smokes marijuana, he usually feels its effect within minutes. The immediate feelings increased heart rate, lessened body movements and balance, and a dreamy, unreal state of mind occur within the first 30 minutes. These short-term effects usually disappear in two to three hours, but they could last longer, depending on how much marijuana the user takes, the strength of the marijuana, and the presence of other drugs added into the mix. As the typical marijuana user breathes in more smoke and holds it inside his body longer than he would a cigarette, marijuana creates a severe impact on ones lungs. Aside from the discomfort that goes with sore throats and chest colds, it has been found that one joint of marijuana is equivalent to the cancer-producing chemicals in five cigarettes. The mental consequences of marijuana use are also severe. Marijuana smokers have poorer memories and brain power than those who do not smoke it. Animals given marijuana by researchers have even suffered brain damage.
