Date: 7th March, 2013/ For IMMEDIATE DISPATCH

International Womens Day 2013 Joint Solidarity Message by the GREAT Trust, Council for Afrika International & the Afrika Liberation Society
The GREAT Trust, Council for Afrika International and the Afrika Liberation Society congratulates ALL Women of the World on the International Womens Day 2013, extend special Goodwill to the noble objective of Total Emancipation of All Women of the World from all forms of oppression and suppression, reaffirm strong solidarity with Womens Equality Efforts / Campaigns and condemn all forms of institutional discrimination against Women of the World. Importantly, we call for strident action on all the causes that contribute to continued discrimination against Women of the World by relevant local, regional, national, international, world institutions, centres of power and decision-making. We also call for a fresh wave of innovative and creative wave of women selfempowerment initiatives and drives, beyond the deficient Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. While we appreciate the unique biological functional differences between men and women, we refuse to accept, categorically reject and object to any form of discrimination against women, no matter how camouflaged, window-dressed or disguised.

Corporately, the GREAT Trust, Council for Afrika International and the Afrika Liberation Society look forwards and continue to work tirelessly with our Ethical Counterparts towards a world with zero-tolerance for discrimination against women, where all forms of prejudice and bigotry against women would be made history. It is unacceptable and repugnant that though there is no one human being that did not come from the womb of a woman [excepting Adam], discrimination against women by men is societal-ly, culturally, religiously and institutionally entrenched. This is a paradox and a contradiction which merit rapid resolution. It is our strongly view that manifest Total Emancipation including Equalities for Women of the World would enrich human civilisation and make the world a better place. Conversely, the continued discrimination, oppression, suppression against our Women impoverishes the world and limits the full potential of human civilisation. Dr Koku Adomdza, President of the GREAT Trust, Council for Afrika International and the Afrika Liberation Society remarked on the significance of the struggle for Womens Emancipation. This day is an opportunity for both men and women to re-evaluate their purpose in life and role in society from an enlightened prism and the beginning of a new century gives us a specific context in the light of the Centenary anniversary of Womens Emancipation last in 2010. Our alpha and omega on this subject is that there can be no justification of discrimination or the exercise of forms of abuse, brutality against women simply because of their gender as females, women i.e. their womanhood. As such we strongly and unambiguously condemn as needless and barbaric the practices of victimisation, harassment, maltreatment of women for who they are and created over which they have no control.

Fundamentally, the Equality Rights of Women is a principle which is sacred and must be upheld by the leaders of a male-dominated world. It is the case that besides the original Adam, all human beings, including men are products of the wombs of women, have mothers who are women and other female relations such as sisters, aunties, nieces, cousins, grandmothers and sometimes blessed with daughters. It is imperative for All Men to see the images of their loved female relatives in every woman and desist from the scourge of inflicting needless emotional, psychological, mental or physical harm to women. To be clear, it is our primary position, to point out the ordinarily cowardliness of men who are violent towards defenceless women [i.e. excepting self-defence]. At the same time, we would appeal to All Women to take on the character of Virtuousness as a way of necessary self-empowerment, appreciation of self-worth through self-respect, in the light of the special uniqueness that Creation adorns on women; alongside other useful interventions such as policy objectives and initiatives that have been advanced to date. The Assertive Virtuous Woman facilitates the preservation and enhancement of the unique positively-influencing possibilities of women as good example that commands the worth of emulation. An Empowered Virtuous Woman, with fully-developed and flourishing potentials and talents is a Positive Role Model for her children, family, relatives and to an entire society as well as a valuably precious asset to the Male Partner. Such should be encouraged by society and especially menfolk, instead of some who pathetically feel intimidated by them.

In the 21st Century, the Era of the Empowered Virtuous Woman has come to stay for a More Equal World and we urge Men and vulnerable women to embrace this reality. We

declare a stance against unethical and discriminatory atrocities against women including honour killings, female gender mutilation, sexual harassment and abuse, domestic violence, female child bride malpractices, forced marriages, human trafficking in women, discrimination against women in education, employment, the board rooms, political leadership and representation. The imperfect and chaotic world we live in is very much a product of male-dominant mis-leadership. It is time to give women the chance of increased roles to enhance much needed Competent Leadership. We call on all cultures, religions, nations and societies to honour the sacred right of Women to Equal Treatment and remove all barriers and outdated, ill-informed oppressive practices that undermine the Equality of Women. The assumption and enforcement of Male Supremacy Patterns over women is a hype, plight and blight that has afflicted human society for centuries and for far too long that require rapid eradication for the benefit of Women, Men and Human Civilisation. There is no doubting that some progress has been made in the struggle to attain the objective of restoring Gender Equality since the suffragettes over a century ago. However, there is still a long way to go to completely overcome the profoundly entrenched discrimination, brutality and atrocities against women. The status quo in 2013 is unacceptable and necessitates urgent action on a number of fronts, informed by some of the overwhelmingly damning empirical evidence and statistics, some of which are cited in the Background Notes below.

Background to the International Womens Day

Monday March 8, 2010 marked 100th anniversary of International Womens Day, marked in most civilized countries of the world to commemorate the remarkable achievements of women in guaranteeing victories for human rights despite continued constraints. International Womens Day serves as a focal point for us to document the present and future challenges facing women and to pool resources to implement womens rights on a global scale. Amazing it is that such a Day should still be necessary. The beating was getting more and more severe. In the beginning it was confined to the house. Gradually he stopped caring. He slapped me in front of others and continued to threaten me. Every time he beat me it was as if he was trying to test my endurance, to see how much I could take. (1) History of International Womens Day International Womens Day started in the United States of America, launched by a declaration of the Socialist Party of America on February 28th, 1909 using as a basis the need to guarantee womens rights in an increasingly industrialized society and was taken up by the international community at the first International Womens Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1910. The horrific and inhumane conditions at the New York Triangle Shirtwaist factory which caused the deaths of 140 garment workers (mostly women) in 1911 provided an added impetus at a time when women were pressing for the right to vote and demonstrations in Russia prior to the 1917 Revolution were the first signs of womens emancipation in that country, culminating in the declaration by Lenin of a Womens Day on March 8th; in 1965 it was declared a public holiday by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. Emotional abuse is worse. You can become insane when you are constantly humiliated and told that you are worthless, you are nothing (2)

Why March 8th? Women had been demonstrating for their rights since pre-Classical times (e.g. the sexual strike called by Lysistrata in Ancient Greece, the March on Versailles by Parisian woman calling for Liberty, Equality, Fraternity in the 1790s). Copenhagen had chosen 19th March for the celebration of an International Womens Day but in 1913, Russian women chose the last Sunday in February (following the Declaration by the Socialist Party of America in 1909) as the date for their International Womens Day to call for peace on the eve of the First World War. As Springtime and local customs to give the first flowers to women combined, the end of February / beginning of March began to be the time of year observed by the feminist movements, until in 1917, Russian women called a strike on the last Sunday of February to protest against the War (23d February) in the Julian Calendar; 8th March in the Gregorian. My husband slaps me, has sex with me against my will and I have to conform (3) Continuing the Impetus After having been considered too stupid to have the right to vote, over the last century, women stood up for their rights and won victories, culminating in the right to vote and in gaining equal rights across a wide spectrum of professional activities. I take a blanket and I spend the night with my children out in the cold because he is hitting me too much and I have to take the kids to stop him hitting them too (4) However, so much more needs to be done and it is a telling statement that after 100 years, we are still faced by glaring and shocking statistics regarding women, such as: Women own one per cent of the worlds property, earn 10% of the worlds income, yet perform 66% of the work, produce 50% of the food;

Women have to work longer hours than men to receive the same income;
