How can we get the surface area of a pyramid? Now thats the question that we are going to answer later. 2. Discussion - Representing the problem into modeling a. Show a square pyramid and its net Since we are asked to get the surface area we will get the area of its faces.

There are 5 faces. Square and triangles are the plane figures has in each face. What can you say about the faces of the pyramid?........ The faces of the pyramid are congruent. The shape of its base is square What is the shape of its base?....................................... s2 or s x s How do we find the area of squares?............................. bh How do we find the area of triangles?........................... 2 How many faces that it have?........................................ What kind of plane figure has each face?...................... B

A
E

This is a net of a square pyramid Lets name each face as A, B, C, D and E.

Face A B C D E

Formula sxs bxh 2 bxh 2 bxh 2 bxh 2

Finding Area 12 x 12 (12 x 15) + 2 (12 x 15) + 2 (12 x 15) + 2 (12 x 15) + 2

Area 144 cm2 90 cm2 90 cm2 90 cm2 90 cm2

2 How can you find the area of the square base?................................ s or sxs

How about the area of each triangular face?................................... Since the 4 lateral faces are congruent, what will you do?..............

bxh 2 Multiply it by 4 or 4(bxh) 2

What will you do with areas of each face to get the surface area of the pyramid? (504 cm2) We have to add the five faces of a square pyramid to get the surface area. So, what do you mean by surface area?........................................... Surface area is the sum of the areas of all its surfaces. Therefore, what is the formula to find the square area of a square pyramid?........................................................................................... Surface Area of a Square Pyramid (SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh) 2 Solution: Surface Area of a Square Pyramid (SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh) 2 Area of the base = sxs = 12 cm x 12 cm = 144cm2 Area of the lateral faces= 4 (bxh) 2 = 4(12x15) = 4 (180) = 4(90) = 360 cm2 2 2 SA = 144 cm2 + 360 cm2 = 504 cm2 Now class, lets derive another formula

sxs

This is our base which is the area is sxs

And when we combine the 2 triangles, what figure will be form? Lets see. bxh bxh

What figure are these?...................................................................... These figure are parallelograms How to find the area of parallelogram?........................................... The area of parallelogram is

VERY GOOD! How many parallelograms are there?.............................................. Therefore, SA = sxs + 2(bh) area of square area of 2 parallelograms Now, lets use this formula in the given situation. Solution: Surface Area of a Square Pyramid (SA) = sxs + 2(bh) Area of the base = sxs = 12 cm x 12 cm = 144cm2 Area of 2 parallelograms = 2(bh) = 2 (12 cm x 15 cm) = 2 (180 cm2) = 360 cm2 2 SA = 144 cm + 360 cm2 = 504 cm2 OK class, what have you notice to the answer of our 1st formula compare to the 2nd formula?........................................... VERY GOOD! The answer in the first formula is the same with the answer in the second formula. Or just, SA = sxs + 42(bh) 21 Therefore, SA = sxs + 2 (bh) 3. Practice Solve for the answers. (Pupils write the correct answer on their own drill board.) The group 1 and 2 use the 1st formula while the group 3 and 4 use the 2nd formula. 1. Kim would like to make a model of a square pyramid whose base is 6 cm and 8 cm high. What is the least amount of cardboard needed for a model? 2. SA = ?, If b = 9 dm h = 9 dm 3. 12 cm

bxh There are 2 parallelograms

They are the same Maam

Pupils raise their drill boards ------------------do---------------------------------do----------------

------------------do---------------5 cm

4. Generalization What is surface area?........................................................... - Surface area is the sum of the areas of all its surfaces. How do we find the surface area of a square pyramid?....... - Get the area of a square base (sxs)
-

Sum of the areas of all its surfaces. 1. Get the area of a square base (sxs) 2. Get the area of its triangular face and multiply it by 4 ( 4 (bxh) ) 2 3. Then add the 2 areas SA = sxs + 2(bh)

Get the area of its triangular face and multiply it by 4 ( 4 (bxh) ) 2 Then add the 2 areas

How about the another formula?..................................... SA = sxs + 2(bh)

VERY GOOD!!! The formula to be used to get the: Surface Area of a Square Pyramid : (SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh) 2 5. Fixing Skills (Group Work) Do what you are told to do. Divide the class into four groups. After 5 minutes. The group leader will present their work. But before we begin, what should we remember or consider when doing group activities? We should-------------------------------------1. Always cooperate with our group mates. 2. We should always keep quiet. 3. Follow the instructions of the teacher. 4. Keep our work clean and When you are done, what will you do?--------------------------------- neat. And the group leader will submit your work and present it to the class. Group leaders, come in front. Heres your assign task. Read it carefully and answer accordingly. Each group will be provided with a white board marker. If you are already done, post your work on the board. You only have 5 minutes to finish your work. You may now begin. Group I Find the surface area of a square pyramid model We should go back to our proper seats and keep quiet.
