2. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: EYE CONTACT: Brown liquid. Causes severe eye, skin and respiratory irritation. Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Causes severe irritation, experienced as discomfort or pain, excess blinking and tear production, marked excess redness and swelling of the conjunctiva and chemical burns of the eye. Brief contact with skin may cause slight irritation with itching and local redness. Prolonged contact may cause more severe irritation, with discomfort or pain, local redness and swelling, and possible tissue destruction. May cause irritation of the respiratory tract, experienced as nasal discomfort and discharge, coughing, and possibly accompanied by chest pain. Prolonged overexposure may cause injury to the respiratory tract. Moderately toxic. Aspiration into the lungs may occur during ingestion or vomiting, resulting in lung injury. Abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting may occur.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

EYES: Immediately flush eyes with water and continue washing for at least 15 minutes. DO NOT remove contact lenses, if worn. Obtain medical attention without delay, preferably from an ophthalmologist. SKIN: Immediately remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention without delay. Wash clothing before reuse. Discard contaminated leather articles such as shoes and belt. INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if not breathing. If breathing is difficult, oxygen may be given by qualified personnel. Obtain medical attention. INGESTION: If patient is conscious, give two glasses of milk or water at once. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Obtain medical attention without delay. MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED: Skin contact may aggravate an existing dermatitis. NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Due to the irritating nature of the material, any aspiration during vomiting could result in severe lung injury. Therefore, emesis should not be induced mechanically or pharmacologically. However, the acute peroral systemic toxicity of the material indicates that evacuation of the stomach contents should be undertaken at the earliest possible time by means carrying the least likelihood of aspiration (e.g. the use of gastric lavage with endotracheal intubation).

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

230, PMCC FLASH POINT ( F) OSHA FLAMMABILITY CLASSIFICATION: Combustible Liquid-Class III B EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Apply alcohol-type or all-purpose-type foam by manufacturer's recommended techniques for large fires. Use carbon dioxide or dry chemical media for small fires. SPECIAL FIREFIGHTING PROCEDURES: Use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing. Unknown EXPLOSION LIMITS IN AIR - LOWER (%) Unknown EXPLOSION LIMITS IN AIR - UPPER (%) Unknown AUTOIGNITION TEMP ( F) UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: None known.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

ACTION TO BE TAKEN IF MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: Wear suitable protective equipment. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Collect for disposal. This product is toxic to fish; avoid discharge to natural waters.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING: Do not get in eyes, on skin or on clothing. Avoid breathing vapor. Do not swallow. Use only with adequate ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling. Sudden release of hot organic chemical vapors or mists from process equipment operating at elevated temperature and pressure, or sudden ingress of air into vacuum equipment, may result in ignitions without the presence of obvious ignition sources. Any use of this product in elevated-temperature processes should be thoroughly evaluated to establish and maintain safe operating conditions. STORAGE: Store in a cool, dry location away from incompatible materials.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Provide sufficient mechanical (general and/or local exhaust) ventilation to maintain exposure below TLV'(s). RESPIRATORY PROTECTION EQUIPMENT: Use self-contained breathing apparatus in high vapor concentrations. PROTECTIVE GLOVES: PVC-coated. EYE AND FACE PROTECTION: Monogoggles. OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Chemical apron, eye bath and safety shower. VENTILATION: General (mechanical) room ventilation is expected to be satisfactory where this product is stored and handled in closed equipment. Special, local ventilation is needed at points where vapors can be expected to escape to the workplace air.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

TOXICITY DATA: In a developmental toxicity study conducted under TSCA test rule, 2-ethylhexoic acid produced evidence of embryofetal toxicity when administered by stomach tube to laboratory animals during pregnancy. However, no statistically significant increase in malformations was observed in offspring, even at maternally toxic doses. In recent Finnish studies, administration of 2-ethylhexoic acid in drinking water slightly retarded fetal development at dosages approaching 600 mg/kg/day during the critical phases of gestation. In addition, high dosages of 2-ethylhexoic acid administered by stomach tube may have inhibited embryo implantation, thereby causing embryo lethality. An increase in liver weight was observed in subchronic laboratory animal feeding studies. No data at this time. ACUTE ORAL LD50: No data at this time. ACUTE DERMAL LD50: No data at this time. ACUTE INHALATION LC50:
