A LOOK BACK: 25 Years of Service


Building Child and Family Initiatives (BCFI) is the new incarnation of the Black Child and Family Institute founded in 1986 under the direction of Barbara Roberts Mason, then president of the Michigan State Board of Education. While the Institute initially focused on addressing the crisis faced by African American children and families, BCFI is now reinventing itself as an organization that is recognized for serving ALL children and families in the Greater Lansing area, regardless of race, ethnicity or economic status.

Program Spotlight
Childrens Defense Fund Freedom School
To address the need for maintaining student learning through summer vacation, BCFI partnered with the Childrens Defense Fund (CDF) to create the Freedom School summer enrichment program. The Freedom School currently serves an average of 80 K-5 students in the Greater Lansing area. Key program components include:

Our Solution
BCFIs solution is to implement a series of programs that support the current Childrens Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School summer program, and our after school enrichment programs. Some programs we are developing include:

Magic Johnson Computer Lab
A community resource since 2003, the lab provides students with access to educational techonology software to help increase student achievement online.
