Past Continous Tense (Sedang Berlangsung Lampau)

Past Continous Tense adalah bentuk waktu yang digunakan untuk menyatakan peristiwa yang sedang berlangsung di masa lampau. Tanda Waktu (Tanda Signal) yang biasa dipergunakan dalam Past Continous Tense adalah: when (ketika) biasanya diikuti oleh Past Tense

while (selagi, sementara, ketika) biasanya diikuti oleh Past Continous Tense as (ketika, waktu) all day yesterday (sepanjang hari kemarin) the whole day last Month (sepanjang hari Senin yang lalu) Ciri-ciri waktu yang digunakan adalah: at six oclock this morning (pukul enam pagi ini) at seven oclock this morning at ten oclock last night at five oclock yesterday from six to ten last night (pukul tujuh pagi ini) (pukul sepuluh tadi malam) (pukul lima kemarin) (dari pukul enam sampai 10 tadi malam)

Sepanjang hari kemarin saya tidak sedang menulis pelajaran. (?) Was I writing a lesson all day, yesterday? Yes, you were. No, you were not. 2. (+) They were studying math yesterday. Mereka sedang belajar matematika kemarin. () They were not studying math yesterday. Mereka tidak sedang belajar matematika kemarin. (?) Were they studying math yesterday?

Yes, we were. No, we were not.

Penggunaan Past Continous Tense


Digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu perbuatan atau peristiwa yang sedang terjadi di waktu lampau. Contoh: 1). We were going to out all afternoon last Sunday. Kami sedang ke luar sepanjang sore hari Minggu yang lalu. At five oclock yesterday, David was drawing a picture. Pukul lima kemarin, David menggambar sebuah lukisan. I saw her as she was falling. Saya melihat saat ia jatuh.

Digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu perbuatan atau peristiwa yang sudah dimulai, namun masih tetap berlangsung ketika kejadian lain terjadi di waktu lampau. Contoh: 1). When you called me, I was studying English. Ketika kamu menelpon saya, saya sedang belajar Bahasa Inggris. When you come in, I was reading a newspaper. Ketika kamu masuk, saya sedang membaca surat kabar. While he was reading a magazine, Hermon arrived. Sementara ia membaca majalah, Hermon tiba.

Past Continous Tense dalam Bentuk Kalimat Tanya (Interrogative)


Jika hendak membuat kalimat tanya, maka To Be (was/were) diletakkan di depan Subject. Contoh: 1). Was I shutting the door when they came? Apakah saya sedang menutup pintu ketika mereka datang? Were you painting this picture when they met him? Apakah kamu sedang melukis gambar ini ketika mereka bertemu dia?

Past Continous Tense dalam Bentuk Kalimat Menyangkal (Negative)


Jika hendak membuat kalimat menyangkal, maka ditambahkan not di belakang To Be (was/were). Contoh: 1). We were not repairing the car when he went to Solo. Kami tidak sedang memperbaiki mobil ketika dia pergi ke Solo. She was not helping her mother when we studied. Dia tidak sedang menolong ibunya ketika kami belajar.

THE PARCEL
The plane was late and the detectives were waiting at airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of a Diamond from South Africa. A few hours earlier, some one had told the police the thief would try to steal the diamond. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it in to the customers house. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two men the other opened the parcel. They were surprised the precious parcel was full of stones and sand.

SEBUAH PAKET
[Sebuah pesawat terlambat dan para detektif sedang menunggu di bandara sepanjang pagi. Mereka mengaharapkan sebuah paket berharga berupa Diamond dari Afrika Selatan. Beberapa jam sebelumnya, beberapa orang telah mengatakan kepada polisi tentang pencuri yang akan mencoba untuk mencuri berlian.
