When did RC start giving Business Unit of the Year award?

It has been at for at least 5 years.

What are the basic values underlying the Award?

Firstly, financial performance year over year against budget and increasing shareholder value. The second value is the initiatives for the year, for example one of the reasons why the Hotel Group and Canvas won this last year is because they completed St. Regis Bali. The third value is team values.

So, it's financial performance, increasing shareholders value, delivery of new project, and general approach to business and treatment of their team.

What if more than one business unit meet the winner criteria for the award?

Business Unit of The Year is the most prestigious award awaited by business units. This award aims to recognize an operating unit for excellent execution of projects /operations which result in outstanding financial and non financial achievements. A very warm and long applause from the audience filled the ballroom when Peter Chambers announce the 2008 winner of this prestigious award during Rajawali Kick Off Meeting held on February 5th, 2009 at JW Mariott Ballroom in Jakarta.

Business Unit of The Year adalah penghargaan yang paling bergengsi yang ditunggu oleh bisnis unit. Penghargaan ini ditujukan kepada bisnis unit yang berhasil mencapai prestasi yang gemilang, baik dalam hal finansial maupun non finansial. Sambutan hangat dan tepuk tangan meriah memenuhi ruangan saat Peter Chambers mengumumkan pemenang tahun 2008 perghargaan paling bergengsi ini pada Rajawali Kick Off Meeting yang diselenggarakan tanggal 5 Februari 2009 di hotel JW Mariott.

Berikut ini adalah interview dengan Peter Chambers – MD Strategy tanggal 17 Februari 2009.

Sejak kapan RC mulai memberikan penghargaan ini?

Paling tidak sejak 5 tahun lalu

Nilai dasar apa mendasari penghargaan ini?

Pertama adalah kinerja keuangan dari tahun ke tahun, terhadap budget, dan juga peningkatan nilai tambah bagi pemegang saham. Kedua adalah inisiatif baru pada tahun tersebut. Sebagai contoh salah satu alasan mengapa hotel group dan Canvas memenangkan penghargaan ini pada tahun 2008 adalah karena mereka berhasil menyelesaikan hotel St. Regis Bali. Dan ketiga adalah kerjasama tim.

Jadi, kinerja keuangan, peningkatan shareholder value, penyelesaian proyek dan kerjasama tim adalah kriteria pemberian penghargaan ini.

Bagaimana jika ada lebih dari 1 bisnis unit mencapai kriteria yang harus dipenuhi?

PROFILE

Well, you can have more than one meet the criteria, but then it's the extent to which they meet the criteria. So, for the example we had 2 Business Units in 2008 that met the criteria. One was Hotels and Canvas, the other one was Semen Gresik. The reason why the Hotel Group was selected was because they achieved a greater increase in shareholder value and delivered the St. Regis Bali Project. Overall, their contribution was the best of all Business Units.

What are the achievements of the Hotel Operations Group and Canvas Developments?

Increased their revenue by 44%. Increased their EBITDA by 53%, outperformed their revenue budget by 8%, outperformed EBITDA budget by 16%, grew shareholder value by over 5%, and completion the St. Regis Bali

Do you think Canvas Developments will sustain their 2008 Performance in 2009 and beyond?

Yes, I believe they will continue to grow although, I do think 2009 will be tough a year. So should Canvas Developments continue to grow? I think it will require great effort. You must remember that the Hotel Group and Canvas are not only impacted by the Indonesian economy, they are also impacted by the world economy. So, if I look at the Business Units. I think Canvas and the Hotel Group will have one of the hardest tasks of all Business Units in 2009.

But I heard a lot of Hotels have decreased their rates.

Well, they have, but that will impact on their performance, won't it? It will be more competitive. Our Hotel Group will have to differentiate on the product offering, in particular the entire “customer experience “. Our Hotel group is very well placed to achieve this differentiation.

For 2009, given the economic outlook, will the Business Unit of the Year Award criteria be adjusted?

No, I think a good management in tough years, still understands how to grow and deliver on their budget. Yes economics will change, however our aim at the end of the day should be to grow shareholders value

Memang bisa saja lebih dari satu bisnis unit memenuhi kriteria, tapi akan dilihat sejauh mana mereka memenuhi kriteria-kriteria tersebut. Sebagai contoh, tahun 2008 ini ada dua bisnis unit yang memenuhi kriteria. Yang pertama adalah Hotel dan Canvas, yang kedua dalah Semen Gersik. Alasan mengapa Hotel dan Canvas yang memenangkan penghargaan ini adalah karena mereka meningkatkan shareholder value dengan angka pertumbuhan lebih baik dibandingkan Semen Gersik. Jadi dua-duanya memenuhi kriteria namun Hotel dan Canvas lebih baik.

Apa saja pencapaian Hotel Operation Group dan Canvas tersebut?

Mereka berhasil meningkatkan pendapatan sebesar 44%, EBITDA 53%. Melebihi budget pendapatan sebesar 8%, dan budget EBITDA 16%. Mereka juga meningkatkan shareholder value lebih dari 5%, dan berhasil menyelesaikan hotel St. Regis Bali.

Apakah menurut anda Canvas Development bisa mempertahankan prestasi 2008 di tahun 2009?

Ya, saya percaya mereka akan terus tumbuh walaupun tahun 2009 akan menjadi tahun yang sangat menantang. Jadi apakah Canvas Development dapat meneruskan pertumbuhannya? Saya pikir itu memerlukan usaha besar. Kita harus ingat bahwa Hotel Group dan Canvas bukan hanya terpengaruh oleh kondisi ekonomi Indonesia, tapi kondisi ekonomi dunia. Jadi saya pikir Hotel Group dan Canvas development memiliki tugas paling berat dibandingkan bisnis unit yang lain di tahun 2009.

Tapi saya dengar banyak hotel menurutkan tarifnya

Ya, itu terjadi, tapi itu akan mempengaruhi kinerja mereka bukan?. Hal itu akan membuat persaingan makin ketat. Hotel-hotel kita harus berbeda dalam penawaran produk, khususnya ”pengalaman pelanggan”. Hotel-hotel kita mempunyai semua yang diperlukan untuk menawarkan perbedaan.

Melihat kondisi ekonomi 2009, apakah kriteria penilaian pemenang penghargaan ini akan diubah?

Tidak. Menurut saya, manajemen yang baik di tahun yang berat ini, tahu bagaimana cara untuk tetap bertumbuh dan mengelola budget mereka. Keadaan ekonomi akan berubah, tetapi pada akhirnya tujuan kita adalah menghasilkan nilai tambah bagi pemegang saham.

What do you feel when Hotel Operations Group was announced as 2008 Business Unit of the Year for 2008?

EH: Proud and happy in particular due to the St. Regis, Bali being now operational.

Ong: I feel very happy and honored that we have won this prestigious award.

FM: Alhamdulillah! I am very pleased and over the moon with the award. Our team has worked very hard

for it for the past 3 years. This is not for us but for

them.

How do you feel about it now?

EH: Deserving as year on year we defined our operation's, added value to the company and the

portfolio.

Ong: That all of us in the Property & Hotel Group should work even harder to achieve even better results in 2009.

FM: It is a great recognition, set a new standard for us and will be challenging for this year and beyond.

FM: Alhamdullilah! Saya merasa sangat bahagia dengan kemenangan ini. Team kami sudah bekerja keras

selama 3 tahun ini. Ini bukan untuk kami, tetapi untuk

mereka.

Bagaimana perasaan anda sekarang?

EH: Sudah sepantasnya kami memperoleh penghargaan ini karena dari tahun ke tahun kami menentukan bagaimana operasi kami,, memberikan nilai tambah pada perusahaan, dan portfolio.

Ong: Kami semua di Property & Hotel Group harus bekerja lebih keras untuk mencapai hasil yang lebih baik di tahun 2009.

FM: Ini adalah penghargaan yang sangat besar, akan menjadi standar baru bagi kami dalam bekerja, dan akan menjadi tantangan untuk tahun ini dan tahun- tahun selanjutnya.

Reflecting back, what have you and your team done which result in your exceptional achievements which led you to getting this award?

EH: Being cognizant of trends. Aware of competition. Focusing on the strength, location, product, service delivery.

Ong: It has always been a challenge to develop any hotel project but the St Regis in Bali, in particular posed a much greater challenge being the first St Regis resort development not only in Bali but also in Asia. The team had to grapple with all the myriad difficulties faced during the construction phase of the project, even requiring us to pitch in to directly liaise and coordinate with all the subcontractors and suppliers involved in the project.

FM: The St. Regis, Bali has set a new standard, of how a luxury lifestyle resort should be.

How confident are you that your team will be able to sustain 2008 performance in 2009 and beyond?

EH: It will be more challenging but the diversity of our destinations, the brands and its pricing will contribute to its achievements.

Ong: 2009 will be a challenging year in view of the global economic crisis. To sustain or improve on last year's performance, we must remain vigilant and strive to be more resourceful and cost efficient in all aspects of our development works. We will also focus on enhancing the revenue and improving the operational efficiency of our hotels. We believe that opportunities still prevail even in such adverse times.

FM: We are still confident to run with full speed although facing challenging times ahead.

What risk management steps do you plan to take in minimizing the risk of the crises to your business?

EH: Not yet defined but the focus will be as I mentioned before: focusing on the strength, product and service delivery

Melihat kembali ke belakang, apa saja yang sudah Anda dan team Anda lakukan hingga berhasil mencapai hasil luar biasa, yang menuntun Anda mendapatkan penghargaan ini?

EH: Mengerti trend yang sedang berkembang. Sadar akan kompetisi. Fokus pada kekuatan, lokasi, produk, dan layanan.

Ong: Membangun hotel selalu menantang. Tapi khusus untuk St. Regis Bali tantangannya lebih besar karena merupakan pembangunan St. Regis pertama, bukan hanya di Bali tapi juga di Asia. Tim yang ada yang harus berhadapat dengan berbagai kesulitan selama pembangunan, bahkan kami harus secara langsung berkoordinasi dengan semua subkontraktor dan supplier yang terlibat dalam proyek ini.

FM: St Regis Bali telah mencetak standard baru tentang bagaimana seharusnya sebuah resort gaya hidup yang mewah itu.

Seberapa yakin Anda bahwa team Anda mampu mempertahankan prestasi ini ke depannya?

EH: Akan lebih berat, tapi adanya keragaman lokasii, “brand”, dan harga akan memberi kontribusi pada kinerja.

Ong: Tahun 2009 akan menjadi tahun yang menantang dari sudut pandang krisis ekonomi global. Untuk mempertahankan atau meningkatkan apa yang sudah kami capai kami harus lebih giat & kreatif serta terus fokus pada efisiensi operasional. Kami juga harus fokus pada perbaikan pendapatan dan peningkatan efisiensi operasional hotel-hotel kami. Kami percaya bahwa tetap akan ada kesempatan pada kondisi sesulit apapun.

FM: Kami tetap yakin dapat berlari dengan kecepatan penuh walaupun menghadapi saat penuh tantangan.

Apa yang akan anda lakukan untuk meminimalkan dampak resiko krisis ekonomi ini terhadap bisnis ini?

EH: Belum terdefiniskan. Tetapi seperti sudah saya kemukakan fokus pada: kekuatan yang dimiliki, produk, dan layanan.

Ong: To carefully carry out feasibility studies prior to any property development or acquisition for informed decisions to be made, for example, in our present consideration on the setting up of a budget hotel

chain.

We must also seize the opportunity to carefully source and negotiate the best possible prices with subcontractors and suppliers in view of the falling material prices and to finalize the material contracts at the appropriate time.

FM: First of all, this crisis will not last forever but we need to mitigate the risks therein:

a. This is the time for looking in and thinking, knowing our SWOT.

b. Be flexible with our market strategies especially in the hotel business to look for emerging or potential markets.

c. Revenue enhancement by up-selling the product, build relationship with wholesaler markets and corporate.

It goes without saying that good leadership is crucial to any successful business. But, what makes a good leader and how can someone develop himself or herself into a good leader if they are not one to begin with? The answer is that there are many factors that contribute to good leadership. And, whether someone is naturally a good leader or not, anyone can become a good leader.

GET TALKING One of those factors of good leadership is communication. Communication is one of the most key elements of leadership. Good communication skills need to be learned to effectively become a good leader or manager. When communication occurs, as a leader, you will be able to accurately convey your ideas and thoughts to those that work for you. In fact, simply being able to convey these things in the first place, much less accurately, puts you in the right direction for leadership. If employees have no idea what is on your mind, your leadership is going to falter. Employees are not typically mind readers. If there is a problem a certain employee is experiencing, good communication can filter the problem out. You, as a leader, can dissect the problem and offer solutions in various ways. Ideas that are given to employees work both ways, as well. Employees can give helpful feedback and generate new ideas to you that help the company as well, when good communication is present.

GET THINGS MOVING Motivation is another variable that plays into good leadership. Employees tend to stagnate when motivation decreases…and it will decrease, without proper motivation. Many leaders try to motivate the old-fashioned way…through fear. (Do what I say or something bad will happen) This is not advisable, since it tends to only deliver short-term results and cause even less competent work in the long run, due to resentment resulting from the fear tactics. Instead, try adding challenges for employees. A fresh challenge always adds excitement and spawns creativity. Challenge your employees with tasks that may be slightly out of their range and let them at it! This increases motivation. If they run into a snag, guide them towards a solution but don't offer the actual solution outright. Coach

them into discovering the solution themselves. Once they have, their self-esteem will rise, thereby raising their motivation level.

TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE Teamwork is always something to consider when striving to become a good leader. This means not only teaching your employees to work together but to become part of the team yourself. Use others' potential. Many times, employees' potential is wasted. A good leader recognizes that his or her employees are more than just employees, they are people too. These people have lives outside of work where they have to make decisions on a daily basis, from how to deal with house payments, to car bills, to raising children, to uncountable tasks in everyday lives. Yet, at work, their decision making skills are not trusted enough to choose what type of toner needs to be ordered for a set of printers. The point here is that employees need to be trusted to do more. A good leader doesn't manage every single detail. Use others' potential to your benefit. You will find that you have become a better leader for it.

BACK TO SCHOOL As always, increasing your education is definitely a good thing when trying to improve leadership, but the school that really needs to be brought at attention here is the kind of school that you don't get a degree for. Take the time to learn as much about your position of being a leader as possible. Do some reading at the nearest bookstore. Talk to other leaders and see how they do things; trade notes. The more you continually evaluate yourself and your practices and search for as much information on leadership as possible, the more you will be able to keep up with changing times and the better leader you will be for it.

Having achieved a total 2008 sales volume of 17.5 billion sticks – record high over the past 18 years, Bentoel celebrated the event by sharing through a CSR program.

Bentoel Group melaksanakan program CSR sebagai ungkapan syukur atas pencapaian total volume penjualan 2008 sebesar 17,5 milyar batang yang merupakan rekor terbaik Bentoel Group dalam 18 tahun terakhir.

On Monday, January 26th 2008 Bentoel Group celebrated their 2008 achievement by Thanksgiving and Sharing. A total of 11,500 food packages containing of bread and mineral water were distributed to 65 orphanages in and around Malang.

In 2008 Bentoel Group achived a record high sales volume of 17.5 billion sticks. This would not have been achieved without the commitment, drive, and perseverance of all employees and the support of all stakeholders.

The food packages were distributed from 11:00 a.m. A fleet of logistic transportation was made available to reach every part of Malang. This CSR initiative is centralized in Bentoel's SKT Tenun production unit which is located on Jalan Peltu Sujono, Janti.

”The required internal and external communication and interactions (in organizing such and event) is hoped to strengthen the family bonding so that this year, the team can work even better together,” stated Satrija Budi Wibawa, Bentoel's Corporate Secretary.

Bentoel Group telah mencapai prestasi kerja luar biasa, rekor selama 18 tahun terakhir berhasil terpecahkan dengan pencapaian total volume penjualan 2008 sebesar 17,5 miliar batang pertahun. Sukses ini memerlukan komitmen, keuletan dan kegigihan semua personel dalam Bentoel Group dan dukungan semua stakeholder.

Pembagian dilakukan mulai jam 11.00 WIB hingga selesai. Sejumlah armada transportasi logistik disiapkan menjangkau distribusi se Malang Raya. Kegiatan CSR Bentoel Group ini dipusatkan di Unit Produksi SKT Tenun, Jalan Peltu Sujono, Janti.

”Komunikasi dan interaksi antara internal dan eksternal ini yang diharapkan bisa meningkatkan jalinan kekeluargaan untuk bekerja lebih baik di tahun ini”, demikian ucap optimis Satrija Budi Wibawa, Corporate Secretary Bentoel Group.

Winner of prestigious Rajawali Awards for two years in a row … Management Excellent Award in 2007, and Ovation Award in 2008 … put him in our top list of interesting figure for Rajawali team to know. What are key to this father of two's success?

“Giving full commitment to the job with passion, and striving in doing the best … that is how I work,” he said. In his opinion, everyone is responsible, but working with “heart” will giving you the optimal result. Being an accounting graduate of Gajah Mada University, he has gained an extensive experience through his career with a leading multinational company in Jakarta before joining Rajawali in 2005.

“By nature, I prefer finance to accounting,” he said when asked about his career path. He sees that his current position in investment division provides him an abundance of opportunities to learn about many things. He considers the job dynamic and very challenging. “I learned a lot here. This is important to me.”

Talking about his career only will not give us a complete view of this Libra gentleman. What does he do at leisure time?

“Everyday I worked from morning to night … therefore, I do my best to devote my weekends with my wife and our two daughters,” (hmmm…. not only is he a career man … he is also a family man). “Normally we stroll in a mall, getting the kids to playground and bookstores”.

Friendly, is the first impression one gets when he or she meets this guy. Born in Lampung, October 12, 1975, his hobbies include watching films and listening to music.

Ramah dan penuh senyum adalah kesan pertama yang kita lihat saat menjumpai sosok yang satu ini. Pria Lampung kelahiran 12 Oktober 1975 ini, ternyata punya hobi nonton film dan mendengarkan musik.

Berhasil mendapatkan penghargaan selama 2 tahun berturut-turut (Management Excellent Award 2007 & Ovation Award 2008), mengantarnya menjadi sosok yang cukup menarik untuk dikenal. Apa saja rahasia pria yang sudah mempunyai 2 anak ini?

“Bekerja dengan penuh komitmen, punya passion dan do the best, itulah cara saya menyelesaikan pekerjaan saya”. Menurutnya, semua orang pasti akan bertanggungjawab dengan pekerjaannya, tapi melakukan pekerjaan itu dengan “hati” akan memberikan hasil yang optimal. Lulusan Akuntansi, Universitas Gajah Mada ini, punya pengalaman yang cukup banyak di salah satu multinasional company yang cukup dikenal di Jakarta, sebelum bergabung dengan Rajawali pada tahun 2005.

“By nature, saya lebih suka dengan finance dibandingkan dengan akuntansi”, begitulah ujarnya saat ditanyakan mengenai perjalanan karirnya. Menurutnya, posisinya di dept investment saat ini, membuatnya diberi kesempatan untuk mempelajari banyak hal, tidak monoton dan sangat 'challenging'. “Saya banyak belajar di sini dan untuk saya, ini kesempatan yang paling berharga buat saya”.

Mengupas perjalanan karirnya, kurang lengkap bila tidak tahu apa saja yang dilakukan pria berbintang libra ini di waktu luang?

“Tiap hari saya bekerja dari pagi sampai malam, jadi saya selalu berusaha menghabiskan akhir minggu saya

dengan istri dan kedua putri saya” (hmm…

sosok ini bukan hanya sukses dalam karir namun juga sangat memperhatikan keluarganya) “Biasanya kami ke mall, ajak anak2 ke arena bermain, makan dan ke toko buku”.
