Triple P Parenting Program Telling Kids What to Do By Professor Matt Sanders

When children refuse to cooperate, it may be related to the way instructions are given. Here are some common traps. Too many. The more instructions you give, the more opportunities to disobey. Too few. Children may sometimes seem disobedient because no one has taken the time to give them clear information on what is expected. Too vague. Shouting your sons name, then pausing and frowning because he is jumping on the couch might not be of much help if he has also just teased his sister. State clearly what behaviours you find unacceptable. Asking, not telling: Dont phrase an instruction as a question. If you ask: Would you like to go to bed now? be prepared for them to say: No. Poorly timed. Asking your child to do something while they are busy watching their favourite television show will probably result in them ignoring the instruction. Shouting from a distance. Instructions shouted from one room to another are often ignored simply because parents are not there to back up the instruction. Emotionally laden. Children react to the emotional tone of what parents say to them. Calling children stupid or an idiot shows disapproval of the child rather than the childs behaviour. Although it can be difficult, parents should work to control expressions of anger when giving children instructions. If you want your child to stop doing something, remember to tell them what to do instead. Give your child time to cooperate and praise them when they do so or carry out a logical consequence if they refuse.

Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P - Positive Parenting Program

Great recipe to get the kids to eat veggies!

Kale chips? I know, but they are bizarrely delicious and strangely hard to stop eating: saline and crispy, with a kind of a mild, green flavor.
What you'll need 1 bunch of kale, washed well 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 tablespoon miso (I used a mild white miso) 2 teaspoons rice or balsamic vinegar

How to make it 1. Heat the oven to 300 and prepare two rimmed baking sheets by greasing them lightly or covering them with parchment paper. 2. Separate the kale leaves from their tough stems. You could use a large knife for this job, and simply cut down the side of each center rib. Now cut across the leaves to make 1- or 2inch pieces of some or other shape. Use a whisk to combine the oil, miso, and vinegar in a large bowl, then dump in the kale and use your hands to coat the pieces evenly with the mixture. Spread it in a single layer across the two sheets and bake until crisp and dry but not black or papery--around 15-20 minutes. Cool and eat.

May I play with my food?

Camrose and Area ECD Coalition Why the early years are so critical?
(Taken from ECMap Key Messages Information Sheet - 4 - January 2013)

The early years, from before birth to age five, set the course for a childs future. Studies show that early development influences how well children do in school, their physical and mental health, job prospects, relationships and even incomes. All children deserve the best possible start in life and the opportunity to achieve their potential. More than one in four young children in Alberta and Canada are experiencing difficulties in development by kindergarten. Children who grow up in poverty or with other social disadvantages are more likely to experience difficulties in development. The middle class has a smaller percentage of vulnerable children, but the greatest numbers of vulnerable children come from middle-class homes.

The Camrose and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition has taken the results of the EDI which was done on kindergarten children in our area and is sharing it with key people in our community., It is true in Camrose as well that 1 in 4 children are experiencing difficulties. These children are the children that do not have any identified diagnosis or special needs. How can we as a community help these children and their families? We can invest in the Early Childhood development!!! How can we invest?

Make donations to agencies that are enhancing Early Childhood Development Volunteer at an activity or event which is promoting ECD. PLAY more with the little people in your life Take a look around at the assets in your community Are they being used by children 0-5? Are they safe? What changes need to be made?
