May 5, 2009 By Lori McNee For most artists, facing a blank page is more intimidating than starting a new painting! We can deal with artists block, but writers block too! But the reality is all successful or aspiring artists need an artists statement. What is an ARTISTS STATEMENT? Simply put, an artists statement is a short piece written for your viewers to answer questions they may have about you and your art. The artists statement is a vital marketing tool used to promote you and your work to potential buyers, critics, fellow artists, friends and exhibition curators. It should be informative and add to the understanding of the artist in an easy, concise manner. Much of it is personal choice, but here are some art industry suggestions. The process: Write a rough draft Start with the pertinent and fill in details Where you were born (if necessary) career, influences, education and finish with current working life (this is written more like a list than a bio or resume) Keep it in chronological order Include objectives and goals together (near the beginning) Include interests and influences together Experiences and activities should be together Remember your audience and their interests Connect your ideas Check your spelling and grammar Proof read it at least two times Have a friend read it Final draft Save!
And yes, as your art changes so will your artists statement Some DOs: Describe your creative process Who inspires you? Why do you create and what does it mean to you? Describe your philosophy and passion What inspires you? Is there a message?

Answer questions about your art Put your art into words ( this can be difficult!) What techniques, style and mediums are used? What are your future goals? Mention significant awards, exhibitions and important collections Use language for non-artists! Dont get too flowery or technical Keep it 3 paragraphs or less (100 words or up to one page) Some of the best statements can be only 3 to 5 sentences! Read other successful artists statements for inspiration Use informal first person, I or Me for website or blogging use Use formal third person, Name or He/She for exhibition, grant and gallery use Consider your audience you might have 2 or 3 versions that you use Use PMI: This means PLUS, MINUS, INTERESTING. This gets you thinking metacognitively which means thinking about thinkingNext time you finish a painting, write down one positive thought about the piece, one negative thought and one interesting though you had while creating the piece. File this information for your next artists statement draft!
Some DONTs: An artists statement is NOT a resume It is NOT a biography Dont catalogue works Dont be funny Dont be pretentious Dont jump around from idea to idea Dont be afraid to ask what the event, gallery or exhibition is looking for in a statement
In todays world, artists are expected to do more than just create. We stretch and prepare canvases, frame paintings, ship them, sell and market our work and ourselves while trying to stay current within the art market. Andmost of us dont have the luxury of a personal assistant or secretary. If you really get stumped you can hire someone to help you write for you. Try using a secretarial service, a college student, or an unemployed writer or journalist. Remember, a good artists statement can often mean the difference between getting accepted or rejected for a show or gallery.
3. Answer these questions as simply as you can. Your answers are the meat and potatoes of your stew. Let them be raw and uncut for now. What is your favorite tool? Why? What is your favorite material? Why? What do you like best about what you do? What do you mean when you say that a piece has turned out really well? What patterns emerge in your work? Is there a pattern in the way you select materials? In the way you use color, texture or light? What do you do differently from the way you were taught? Why? What is your favorite color? List three qualities of the color. Consider that these qualities apply to your work.
4. Look at your word list. Add new words suggested by your answers to the questions above. 5. Choose two key words from your word list. They can be related or entirely different. Look them up in a dictionary. Read all the definitions listed for your words. Copy the definitions, thinking about what notions they have in common. Look your words up in a Thesaurus. Read the entries related to your words. Are there any new words that should be added to your word list? 6. Write five sentences that tell the truth about your connection to your work. If you are stuck, start by filling in the blanks below. When I work with__________ I am reminded that___________. I begin a piece by______________. I know a piece is done when__________________. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of _____________. When people see my work, I'd like them to ________________.
First paragraph. Begin with a simple statement of why you do the work you do. Support that statement, telling the reader more about your goals and aspirations. Second paragraph. Tell the reader how you make decisions in the course of your work. How and why do you select materials, techniques, themes? Keep it simple and tell the truth. Third paragraph. Tell the reader a little more about your current work. How it grew out of prior work or life experiences. What are you exploring, attempting, challenging by doing this work.
make sense to you, make a crisp, clear original of your artist's statement. Sign and date it. Make lots of copies, you will have lots of people to serve it to!

This was my first artist's statement. A later version is after. Notice how the essentials which were stirred up in my word list exercise have carried through to the later version. Mollycoddles Knitting is my key to the secret garden, my way down the rabbit hole, my looking glass. Handknitting started it. Transforming string into clothing without expensive and cumbersome equipment has always struck me as magical. Over the years, handknitting has filled me with a sense of accomplishment and integrity, and it has proven a most amenable vehicle for translating inner vision to outer reality. I love the creative power which knitting gives me, and I've studied it avidly. I started to exhibit and sell my work as an experiment in justifying my passions for the process and for fiber. Now those passions have transformed me and - look, Ma! - I'm a fiber artist. I knit from the inside out. Though I work as deliberately as I can, consciously employing knitting lore and traditional techniques, my unconscious is project manager. The concreteness of the activity frees my imagination and it "sees" each piece into existence. A lifelong word junkie and reader of literature great and small, I've a storehouse of associations vying for expression. I work in bemused contemplation of the battle between reverence and irreverence which occurs in every piece. Perhaps that is what it is really all about.

Bainbridge Island, WA April 1990 Revised Artist's Statement Knitting is my key to the secret garden, my way down the rabbit hole, my looking glass. Hand knitting started it. From the beginning the process of transforming string into cloth has struck me as magical. And, over the years, that magical process has had its way with me, leading me from hobby to art. Knitting fills me with a sense of accomplishment and integrity, and has proven a most amenable vehicle for translating inner vision to outer reality. I knit from the inside out. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious is the undisputed project manager. The concrete, repetitive nature of this work frees my imagination and provides many opportunities for happy accident and grace to influence the finished product. Recently I discovered some childhood drawings: simple, crayoned patchworks that resonate deeply with my fiber work. Inspired and invigorated by a renewed sense of continuity, and awed by the mystery of how creation occurs, I am now knitting richly varied fabrics exploring many patterns, textures and colors. Claude Verlinde found his vocation very early and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the Academy de la Grande Chaumiere at the age of twenty. Soon, the richness of his painting, its great sensitivity controlled by technique, made Verlinde undisputed master of visionary art of our time Influenced by idealism in the mystical, visionary and esoteric traditions, the artist describes his work as a contemporary Tantric or Transfigurative Art that explores the dramatic union of the sensual and spiritual. His work is akin to a revival of classical neoplatonic ideals centering on the figure as temple and vessel sublimed by transformative forces. From early on there really wasnt any doubt that a career in art was the direction I was headed. I was hardly interested in anything else and a lions share of my childhood was spent with my head in the clouds, doodling a veritable army of dinosaurs, space ships, demons and imps. Even much of my later schooling was spent failing other useful but mundane subjects like chemistry, math and english while art was the one area that I excelled at. College was hardly different, I spent six years finding myself and taking a lot of classes before graduating with a BFA. Documented and dedicated to my chosen profession I set out to make my veritable mark on the world.
