Overview Selected topics in chapters 1-12 in the textbook will be covered. There will be three hour-long tests and a final exam. The three-hour final exam, given at the time scheduled by the Registrar, will be cumulative but will have some emphasis on material covered since the last hour exam. Grading Your course grade will be determined by an assessment of the quality and quantity of your work. The following proportions will be used: Component HW Problems Tests Final Exam % Totals 15% 40% 30% Grades 97 100 = A+ 85 88.9 = B+ 73 76.9 = C+ 62 64.9 = D+ 93 96.9 = A 81 84.9 = B 69 72.9 = C 60 61.9 = D 89 92.9 = A- 77 80.9 = B65 68.9 = C - 55 59.9 = D0-54.9 = F

Policies & Responsibilities 1. The majority of your grade in this course will be based on your ability to communicate your knowledge by solving problems in homework, tests, and in the final examination. Problem solutions will be graded based on a logical and organized answer grounded in the correct science of a situation. You will get very few points for just giving the correct numerical answer with no indication of how it was obtained. No credit will be given for disconnected diagrams, isolated equations, or any answer that is not justified by a preceding logical development. On the other hand, numerical errors in a solution that is well written and based on correct science will not be heavily penalized. Credit will be given for partially correct solutions. However, you will only receive credit if I can determine what you were doing from what you have written, and that your reasoning is correct. 2. HOMEWORK PROBLEMS will be assigned from the textbook and other sources. You are REQUIRED to finish all the assigned questions to turn in the homework. However, only some of the assigned questions in the homework will be chosen for grading. The homework is due in one week from the date assigned. Late homework is subject to penalty, one day late, 10% less, two day late, 20% less, and so on. The homework problem solutions will be posted on the MSE 200 website. No homework will be accepted after the answer is posted online. 3. Attendance is expected. Absences and late or missed assignments can be excused as defined in NCSUs attendance policy (http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.3.php). Any arrangements for making up missed assignments must be made with the instructor in advance for non-emergency excused absences and immediately upon return to class for emergency excused absences. In all cases, contact the instructor prior to an excused absence. If you must miss class due to a documentable family emergency, because you are hospitalized, or if a nurse or physician has instructed you not to attend class for medical reasons, the absence will be excused. Other compelling reasons for missing class may be considered excuses if they are approved by the instructor. Notify the instructor in writing or by e-mail either in advance of the absence. 4. Students are expected to adhere to the guidelines for academic integrity as outlined in the NCSU Code of Student Conduct (http://www.ncsu.policies/student_services/student_discipline/POL11.35.1.php). Cheating and plagiarism will result in loss of credit for the assignment in question. Each student should solve homework assignments and work independently unless otherwise instructed. 5. Reasonable accommodations will be made for any student with a verifiable disability. To take advantage of available accommodations, students must register with the Disability Services Office. For more information on NCSU policy on working with students with disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Regulation (http://www.ncsu.edu/policies/academic_affairs/courses_undergrad/REG02.20.1.php). Open-Door Policy One of the aims of this course is for you to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the material covered since this forms the foundation for future work in materials science and engineering. If any difficulties or problems arise in this course that interfere in any way with your learning or optimum performance, please keep me informed. Please stop by to see me at any time with any matter pertaining to your learning of materials science that you would like to discuss. I will do my best to address problems promptly and effectively. Dont wait until the last minute. Please get in touch with me in person or by e-mail. My door is open! Note: This syllabus is subject to change. Updates will be announced in class when changes occur.
