717 Technical Drawing & Graphics Technology

2007 - 2008

Faculty Name: Patti Ryan Contact: pryan@mpsd.org Room Number: 177

Course Description
This course introduces students to the tools, materials, principles and techniques used by professionals to produce blueprints and other line drawings for the manufacturing and construction trades. Students will use drafting tools to create single view, three-view and pictoral drawings. Students will use drafting tools and techniques to solve geometric problems without calculations. Students will also gain experience using the engineering design process. This course is great for students interested in architecture and engineering, and is a great complement for the geometry student.

High School Level: 727 Drafting and Design 737 Architectural Drawing & Design 757 Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)

Textbooks & Reading Materials

Drafting curriculum is adapted from the text: Spencer, Dygdon & Novak. (2004) Basic Technical Drawing (8th Ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill. and earlier edition: Spencer & Dygdon. (1980). Basic Technical Drawing (5th Ed.). New York, NY:

Macmillan. Drawing problems come directly from these texts. Supplementary exercizes and instructions developed by the instructor. Engineering challenges come from a variety of resources.

Books
McGraw-Hill, (27 March, 2003). Basic Technical Drawing, Student Edition. Glencoe/McGraw-Hill.

Behavior Expectations & Classroom Conduct

Behavioral expectations are as stated in the student handbook.

Grading Policies
Term Grading: Unit Drawings: 60% Problem sheets: 15% Engineering Design Project: 10% Efficiency/Output: 10% Effort: 5% Overall Grade: Term 1: 22.5% Term 2: 22.5 % Term 3: 22.5% Term 4: 22.5% Final Exam: 10% Student is responsible for making up missed classwork. Students may arrange to use the drafting room during directed study time or after school with instructor. Students may also take drafting board and tools home for the night to do makeup work. Within a term, students may re-do (and re-submit for grading) any drawing. New drawing grade replaces old grade. Grade scale is as stated in student handbook. Policies on cheating and plagiarism are as stated in student handbook.
