Solidarit Commission en Direct Articles and Stagiaire Video

The articles below are a small collection of various Commission en Direct articles since 1999 which are related to Traineeship Solidarit in some way. Unfortunately, not all articles written were kept or found for this Reference Document. They are here as an example and for your information. There is also a video from of former Commissioner Hans Van den Broek at two public ceremonies at Rond Point Schuman at which he presents a brick-making machine and farewells a truck-load of wheelchairs about to be driven to Estonia, organised by trainees.

Background
Solidarit was started by trainees on the Winter 98/99 Traineeship. One of the main reasons it started was because the Traineeship in the internationally important European Commission represents one of the largest and most continuous streams of highly qualified, multi-lingual, high achieving and ambitious assemblies of potential future leaders and policymakers anywhere in the world and there was opportunity, responsibility, to inspire their goodwill and energy in the values espoused by the Institutions and to help create actions which help others and which give a sense of perspective and purpose. Solidarit has been voluntary operated and organised by independent groups of Commission trainees each Traineeship period since then. A part-time trainee was appointed by the Commission Traineeship Office in October 2003 to assist with both Solidarit and the stagiaire website, the position was discontinued approximately after the Summer 2007 Stage. The Solidarit sub-committee has always, if informally, been seen as a valuable activity by those within the Commission and has given the EU Institutions a lot to be proud of. Former Commissioners Hans Van den Broek (External Relations), Emma Bonino (ECHO and Consumer Affairs), Poul Neilson (Development and ECHO) and Neil Kinnock (Administration), Stavros Dimas (Environment) and Andris Piebalgs (Energy), the president of the Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering and Her Majesty, the Queen of the Belgium and others have all been aware of or involved in Solidarit through such things as opening exhibitions or presenting cheques to charities over the various Traineeship periods. Its become the most successful extra-curricula activity on the worlds biggest Stage.
