At KOMPAN, we know that a playground is always more

all our research and knowledge from the KOMPAN Play

health. And children are more likely to spend play time

physical health benets of play have been substantially
researched and documented, from children to teenag-
ers particularly girls and even to adults and senior

40 years of changing the world
of childrens play
40 years ago, a young artist named Tom
Lindhardt Wills witnessed an event that
changed the world of childrens play. One of
his bright, large sculptures had been placed
in a new housing estate to add colour to the
otherwise drab surroundings. Realising that
children were more interested in playing on it
than admiring it, he established a dedicated,
childfocused play equipment company
KOMPAN.

MORE BODY THAN MIND
Physical exercise is essential for toddlers to develop
mental capabilities. They need to move up and down,
position themselves above and below, climb over and
under, and be seated higher and lower to build up an
understanding of spatial relations. Hand-eye coordina-
tion needs to be stimulated, supported and practiced.
KOMPAN High-quality play areas and equipment are
designed with these needs in mind.
THE RIGHT SIZED CHALLENGE
Its important to remember just how SMALL these
children are. Toddler play equipment and areas should
be designed with this in mind.
EVOLVING LANGUAGE SKILLS
A key driver of language development is adult-child
interaction. KOMPAN Playgrounds and play equipment
can support and encourage this, especially when they
resemble familiar situations and support imaginative
themes and emerging role play. Therefore elements
that can be described, reported, named or compared
also help toddlers acquire these crucial early skills.
BEGINNERS IN FRIENDSHIPS
Research shows that toddlers engage in signicant social
interaction despite their limited use of spoken language.
They make up repetition games and play them in groups,
repeating each others actions and sounds. Activities such
as springers, small seesaws or stomach swings placed in
pairs to encourage eye contact and play in groups of twos
or threes can promote this.

MORE ADVANCED PHYSICAL SKILLS
Pre-school children need gross motor and sensory
skill practice. The difculty of the physical activities they
engage in and the challenges they overcome increases
steadily. A variety of physical activities let them build up
cross-body coordination, hand-eye coordination and a
general understanding of their physical capabilities. Jum-
ping and running are also important means of building
the bone mass they will need for the rest of their lives.
IMAGINATION WITHOUT LIMITS
Pre-schoolers increasingly express themselves through
spoken language. With limited control over their world,
young children use their imagination and fantasy to
create situations they can control. They act out social
situations they dont yet fully understand, building up
explanations for the social phenomena they encounter.
Childrens role-playing is sustained by their developing
language abilities and creative powers. Play areas of-
fer easily recognizable themes can help promote this
development.
UNDERSTANDING CAUSE AND EFFECT
Pre-schoolers grow to understand the cause and effect of
phenomena in their surroundings, learning through play
and rst-hand interaction. Since children need to expe-
rience things to understand them clearly, playgrounds
should provide opportunities for cause-and-effect play
such as manipulating various items. Other elements
such as owers growing in pots can also help support

FOR PHYSICAL EXCELLENCE
Children now seem able to do and learn almost anything.
Physically, children now have the same proportions as
adults and their proprioception and sense of balance grow
better every day.
School-aged children can master basic coordination skills
such as running, climbing, balancing etc. Because their
range of skills is so broad, its important to offer a wide
diversity of agility and coordination challenges. When
designed appropriately like KOMPAN Playgrounds, they
are perfect environments for helping achieve the physical
excellence they aspire to at this stage.Habits involving
regular physical exercise normally start between the ages
of 6 and 12, which is also the age when physical literacy
should be promoted. Physical education specialists often
mention ABC, or agility, balance and coordination. They
also agree that the element of play is fundamental at this
stage to get children enthusiastic about physical activity.

CREATIVITY AND RULES
6- to 12-year-olds gradually gain an understanding of
other peoples feelings, reactions and motives. 6-year-
olds are able to speak uently and expand their vocabu-
lary, making them better able to play with more children.

Games with rules will appeal to these children as they
begin to enjoy positive competition, creating rules and
measurements to benchmark themselves and others.
But they also strive to exceed their physical comfort

Recent research shows that much of the learning

PUMP UP THE PACE
Teenagers growth is so fast that it dramatically challenges
their sense of balance. They need to build up strength,
endurance and speed. Opportunities to meet and move
are crucial to teenagers, not least because physical activity
seems to be declining in this age group. Statistics show
an alarming growth in the number of teens suffering from
obesity.
Teenagers say their favourite activities in play spaces are
swings, climbing equipment, trim trails and ball game pit-
ches. Activities that are challenging and seem somewhat
daring are the most popular. Teenage girls tend to prefer
less strenuous activities such as spinning, swings and
equipment rather than ball games and skating.
ITS ALL ABOUT FRIENDS
During teenage years, social interaction with peers be-
comes more important than ever. Teenagers need to be
with friends and make new acquaintances, preferably in
large groups. Its essential to take this into account when
designing play equipment and play areas for this age
group.
MIND AND BODY
The pace of brain and mental faculty growth is still
considerable at this age. Numerous studies show

modular platform which makes it possible to design unique play

KOMPANs new play structure platform design is based on round steel posts with smooth
powder-coated surfaces and a set of unique aluminium clamps. Modular oor sizes with
high pressure laminate (HPL) oor plates make it possible to congure various sizes of play
structures. Roofs and panels are made of high density polyethylene plastic (HDPE) with
maximum UV stability. All slides are available in moulded HDPE plastic, stainless steel
track with HDPE sides or full stainless steel versions.

1. WARRANTY COVERAGE
This warranty applies to KOMPANs products for the time periods described for
each product type above and with the limitations described in this warranty.
The warranty period applies from the date of purchase by the rst customer.
This warranty covers only defects in materials. KOMPANs liability under this war-
ranty is limited to replacement of defective products, without charge, at KOMPANs
discretion. Defective electronic components will be delivered and changed by a
KOMPAN ICON Professional installer free of charge

2. WARRANTY APPLIES ONLY IF PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN PROPERLY
INSTALLED AND MAINTAINED
The warranty only applies if KOMPANs products have been installed according
to the instructions provided by KOMPAN, and maintained correctly according to
the KOMPAN Maintenance Manual.
3. NO COVERAGE FOR ACCIDENTS, WEAR, TEAR, COSMETIC ISSUES,
MISUSE OR VANDALISM
This warranty does not cover any damage caused by accident, improper care,
negligence, normal wear and tear, surface corrosion on metal parts, discoloured
surfaces and other cosmetic issues or failures due to misuse or vandalism. Natu-
ral changes in wood over time are considered cosmetic issues and not covered.
4. PRODUCTS INSTALLED NEAR WATER
Products installed in direct contact with chlorinated water or saltwater, or pro-
ducts installed with occasional contact with such water or installed so close to the
shore they are subjected to salt spray are not covered by the KOMPAN warranty
for any defects caused by corrosion.
Products installed in coastal areas, within 200 meters from the shore, will only
be covered by the warranty for half the period of the standard product warranty in
relation to defects caused by corrosion. KOMPANs Lifetime warranty if applicable
is limited to a 5 year warranty in relation to such products.
A playground is only as good as it is reliable.
*KOMPANs LIFETIME warranty is in effect for
the lifetime of the product until the product is
uninstalled and/or taken out of use. In addition,
KOMAN's generol lerms & delivery condilions
apply and supplement this warranty.

their boundaries and challenge their
environments in unexpected ways. This
is an essential part of developing their
mental and physical abilities and it is
how they learn to anticipate and cope
with risks. Our playgrounds are built to
