The specific technical features of the 3AP1/2 high-voltage circuit breaker are shown on the following pages.

The Structure

We use the selfcompression quenching principle for the voltage range 72.5 kV to 420 kV. This system uses the arc power for optimal arc quenching, allowing the operating energy to be reduced to a minimum. Circuit breakers up to and including 300 kV have one interrupter unit per pole. 3AP high-voltage circuit breakers for voltage levels up to 420 kV are equipped with two interrupter units. Because of the low energy requirement, during development we were able to fall back on one of our drive mechanism forms which has proved itself over a long time: The stored energy spring mechanism. The switching mechanism is actuated by a drive rod.

3AP circuit breakers are available in different designs: 3AP1: One interrupter unit per pole FG Stored energy spring mechanism, three-pole breaker and shared breaker base FE Stored energy spring mechanism for one or three-pole operation with shared breaker base FI Stored energy spring mechanism for one or three-pole operation and individual assembly of the three poles with variable pole pitch 3AP2: Two interrupter units per pole. 3AP1 FG/FE

The Quenching Principle

Current path The current path is made up of the terminal plates (1) and (8), the contact carrier (2) the base (7) and the movable contact cylinder (6). When closed, the operating current flows through the main contact (3). Parallel to this an arcing contact (4) is in operation.

Opening operating currents During the opening process, the main contact (3) opens first, and the current commutates to the arcing contact, which is still closed. When this contact subsequently opens an arc is created (4). At the same time, the contact cylinder (6) moves into the base (7) and compresses the quenching gas there. This forces the gas to flow in the reverse direction, through the contact cylinder (6) to the arcing contact (4) where it quenches the arc.

Opening fault currents With large short-circuit currents, the quenching gas at the arcing contact is substantially heated by the energy of the arc. This leads to an increase in the pressure in the contact cylinder. In this case, the energy needed to build up the required quenching pressure, does not have to come from the drive mechanism. Subsequently, the stationary arcing contact releases the current flow of the nozzle (5). This forces the gas out of the contact cylinder back into the nozzle and quenches the arc.

The Stored Energy Spring Mechanism

Some points in favor of our stored energy spring mechanism The use of the most up-to-date production techniques makes it possible to have a compact housing. With the arrangement of the opening and closing springs in the mechanism, a simple and robust structure is achieved.

This reduces the number of moving parts. Rolling contact bearings and the maintenance-free charging gear are prerequisites for decades of reliable and safe operation. Proven design principles such as, vibration-isolated latches, and the load-free isolation of the charging gear were retained.

The advantages of the stored energy spring mechanism: High reliability through low drive energy Simple functioning principle Circuit status can be checked at any time Low-maintenance, economical, long service life High environmental compatibility

The Control System

The control system includes all the secondary technical components required for operating the circuit breaker, which are mainly arranged in the control cabinet and the drive mechanism housing. The control, tripping, motor and heating power supplies can, to a great extent, be selected. Depending on your requirements, two standard equipment variants are available. Basic variant V1 Basic variant V1 contains all the control and monitoring components needed to operate a circuit breaker. In addition to the elementary operating functions, it contains: 19 auxiliary switch contacts (9 NC, 9NO, 1wipe) Counter Local operation

Compact variant V3 In addition to the functions of Basic variant V1, this variant contains: Spring monitoring through motor running time monitoring Motor circuit breaker Heating circuit breaker Heating monitoring (current measuring relay) Lighting and socket assembly with shared circuit breaker to make maintenance and servicing easier Surge damping

Worth mentioning Beside these two variants, a large number of further components and options are available to our customers. This means that every control system for a circuit breaker can be individually designed. All control components are homologated for use with our circuit breakers, are completely weatherproof (protection level IP55) and vibration proof, and fulfill all the requirements of electromagnetic compatibility. The circuit breaker documentation contains the circuit diagram for the control system. This diagram consists of the following documents: Location diagram Circuit diagram Expanded equipment diagram with technical data and equipment parts list Terminal diagram and connector diagram for the FI designs The circuit diagram documents are provided in two languages, German and one of the leading international languages.

Quality Right from the Start

Development The foundations for the quality of Siemens highvoltage circuit breakers is laid right at the beginning of the development of a new product. Switching performance, highvoltage stability and performance under normal mechanical loads (wind and short circuits) and in an earthquake are simulated and optimized in the outline design phase using computer-aided calculations.

All 3AP1 circuit breakers can be used in earthquakes up to 0.5 g without additional fittings. In our Berlin switching plant, there is a modern testing laboratory, where all the required fittings are available: Physics laboratory High-voltage testing laboratory Switching performance testing laboratory Mechanical testing laboratory Heating testing laboratory

The testing laboratory is certified by the German accreditation site Technik e.V. in accordance with DIN 45001. Through the society for electrical highperformance tests (PEHLA), the testing laboratory is part of the European network of independent testing organizations (STL).

The 3AP1 and 3AP2 circuit breakers were completely homologated in accordance with IEC 60056 and 60694 before their market launch.

89

Routine tests Important modules are subjected to complete preliminary testing before assembly. As a result it is possible, for example to guarantee a leakage rate for the circuit breaker of less than 0.5% per year. Every circuit breaker is completely assembled in the test laboratory. The requirements for the computeraided routine testing are automatically taken from the order handling process. Thereby the fulfilment of every customer requirement is ensured before dispatch.

The routine testing is carried out according to IEC or ANSI and includes at least the following points: A series of 100 mechanical operating cycles Determination of operating time Tripping and motor currents Gas monitoring, testing of the control circuits according to the circuit diagram Voltage drop in the main current path High-voltage testing

Installation

Installation and commissioning The circuit breaker is dismantled into several subassemblies for transportation.Transportation costs are minimized by placing several circuit breakers together into one transportation unit. The subassemblies can quickly be assembled into a complete circuit breaker at the switching station. The 3AP circuit breakers can be installed by a single installation fitter: 3AP1 half a working day 3AP2 one working day No special tools are required

Service for the life of the circuit breaker Service by the manufacturer is available to the operator throughout the entire service life of the circuit breaker. The manufacturer can also provide installation and commissioning. The first checks on the circuit breaker are only due after 12 years, and the first maintenance after 25 years. Depending on customer requests, different diagnostic processes can be offered. If, nevertheless, a fault develops, a 24-hour manufacturers service is available, which will immediately send out service personnel or deliver spare parts. 1 Install pole column A 2 Install pole column B 3 Install pole column C
