Collectively, African Americans are more involved in the American political process than other minority groups in the United States, indicated by the highest level of voter registration and participation in elections among these groups in 2004. African Americans collectively attain higher levels of education than immigrants to the United States. African Americans also have the highest level of Congressional representation of any minority group in the U.S. The large majority of African Americans support the Democratic Party. In the 2004 Presidential Election, Democrat John Kerry received 88% of the African American vote compared to 11% for Republican George W. Bush. Although there is an African-American lobby in foreign policy, it has not had the impact that African American organizations have had in domestic policy. Historically, African Americans were supporters of the Republican Party because it was Republican President Abraham Lincoln who helped in granting freedom to American slaves; at the time, the Republicans and Democrats represented the sectional interests of the North and South, respectively, rather than any specific ideology, and both right and left were represented equally in both parties. The African American trend of voting for Democrats can be traced back to the 1930s during the Great Depression, when Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program provided economic relief to African Americans; Roosevelt's New Deal coalition turned the Democratic Party into an organization of the working class and their liberal allies, regardless of region. The African American vote became even more solidly Democratic when Democratic presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson pushed for civil rights legislation during the 1960s. After over 50 years, marriage rates for all Americans began to decline while divorce rates and out-of-wedlock births have climbed. These changes have been greatest among African Americans. Part II Answer the following in 50 to 150 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use. What is racism? In what ways does racism affect diversity? It seperates us from our neighbors. Instead of trying to better our lives or our nation we are spending more time fighting a constant battle with "that black group down the street." We become diverse and split ourselves apart, grouping together by our fellow races. We then create cities seperated by race, and prefer to stay in our own city with fellow people of our race. Our country becomes divided, one race on one side and another on the otherside. Our country at this point could be called 2 seperate countries, and

How do racial groups interact in contemporary America? Are interactions positive, negative, or neutral? Support your response using proper citations. it is difficult to say on how they interact with each other especially race is involve here. It will depend on the person who will handle it, that person might be a positive type wherein he is not thinking whatever race people have or he is the negative type being negative to people who are not on the same race. Are there existing social inequities based on race? Why or why not? Some people argue that there are. For instance, the fact that minorities are over-represented in prison cells compared to white people. Not in raw numbers per se, but proportionately. Some argue that it's because the white race is more protected, can afford better attorneys, are favored by judges, and that minorities are targeted in drug busts and gang membership arrests more often than whites. Others argue that minorities actually commit more crime and have higher levels of gang membership and deal more drugs than whites. What do you believe to be the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in todays society? racial prejudice and discrimination. Ignorance. misunderstanding of cultures and customs. bad experiences. environment. all in all they coincide there is no ONE answer. Usually because they don't understand something (e.g. geisha), or someone from that culture was accused of doing something horrible and immediately everyone in that culture/religion was looked at differently (e.g. muslims). or some people are just really rude and like to laugh at how immigrants can't always speak really good english. which is stupid since a lot of people with english as their first language can't speak very good english.
