21 Narch is Harmony Day. Harmony Day is managed by the
Department of !mmigration and Citizenship and coincides
with the United Nations !nternational Day for the Elimination
of Racial Discrimination. !t is a day of cultural respect, widely
celebrated across schools, childcare centres, community
groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local
government agencies.
The message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. !n 2013
the theme is: Nany Stories - One Australia.
Classes across the school will be discussing the diversity of
our national heritage and the need for tolerance and
understanding as we grow as a nation.

! have been advised that there may be mornings this week
when the school crossing will not be supervised. Parents are
asked to take special care in instructing their children on
how to use the crossing safely. Better still, if parents can
accompany their children and assist others to cross Parkes
Street it would be greatly appreciated.

The roads around the school are controlled by Wollongong
City Council and NSW Roads and Naritime Services and
policed regularly by the NSW police and council rangers. !
would advise parents to take the utmost care when dropping
off or picking up their children from school and to be very
mindful of the parking restrictions around our school. The
safety of our children is everyone's responsibility.

Last week the school had a visit from !nspector Nichael
Gray, Community safety Officer, !llawarra for the NSW Rural
Fire Service. !nspector Gray was here to review our school
bushfire emergency plans and to advise best practice. Our
school has developed its emergency plan in consultation
with all appropriate agencies. The school will be developing
using the most up to date technologies a communications
strategy for time of bushfire emergency.

1. Establish the rules straight up - eg, "You can only
use the mobile to call mum or dad if the bus is late
or you are feeling worried."
2. Add your numbers or any other numbers your child
might need in an emergency to the favourites or
speed dial. Explain how a reverse call works if they
don't have credit and need to contact you.
3. Confirm via the service provider's website how to
block adult content and premium SNS services - this
way there can be no inappropriate or costly access.
!f it isn't possible, talk to your child about these
services and why they should steer clear of them. !f
the phone is a `hand-me-down', make sure the
settings are changed to suit your child and any old
informationfphotos are wiped.
+. Remind your child that every call, SNS and look on
the internet costs money! This is a great opportunity
to teach your child about budgeting and credit.
5. Stick to a pre-paid account to prevent any bill
shocks.
6. Nake sure they don't let anyone borrow their phone.
7. Let them know it's ok to tell you if they come across
something that worries them or makes them
uncomfortable.
8. Advise them to never post their number or anyone
else's on the internet. Show your child how to turn
off location services when not specifically using
them.
9. !f your child has rung up an excessive bill, contact
your mobile phone provider to discuss it. The
Telecommunications !ndustry Ombudsman may also
be able to help.
10. !f your child receives an inappropriate call, teach
them to hang up immediately.!f your child receives
an inappropriate text message, make sure that they
don't reply to the message but show it to a trusted
adult.

!n the NSW Syllabuses for the Australian curriculum,
information and communication technology (!CT) is a
component of `learning across the curriculum content'.
!t is classified as a `general capability' which means it
encompasses the knowledge, skills, attitudes and
behaviours to assist students to live and work
successfully in the 21st century.
At Helensburgh PS we provide our students with many
opportunities to become competent, discriminating and
creative uses of !CT. We want them to learn to use !CT
effectively and appropriately when investigating,
creating and communicating ideas and information. Our
goal is that our students will be safe and respectful
digital citizens who are motivated, connected,
collaborative and engaged learners.
Our students create and publish a variety of !CT
projects on our !ntranet, shared with the world on our
website and blogs, and they also complete activities
using our !WB's, laptops, desktops and more recently
iPads. KB, 2D and years 3 to 6 (via their RFF blogs)
also participate in a variety of blogging activities at
school and also at home. By the end of this term we
will also have access to a new DEC Google Apps
package accessed through our portal. Apps in this
package will include Google Drive (docs, forms,
presentations, spreadsheets) and Google Sites. This will
give our students additional tools to create, collaborate,
store and share their work, in a safe and secure
environment.
The latest !CT work completed and published on our
!ntranet and website comes from students in KB who
used Kid Pix Deluxe to draw their favourite fruit and
vegetables. Please visit the `Kindergarten Students'
Work' page on our website see their work, as well as
their wonderful fruit models completed last week, as

A wonderful sight is of HPS students interacting with
garden areas of our school - with busy hands,
excited by their continual nature discoveries, and
excited by the results of their dedication and team
work.
Activities last week included Stage 2 children
harvesting and bagging potatoes and carrot seeds
and tidying no-dig garden beds before planting
peas. Year 5 students completed overhauling the
rock path, in the `quiet area', to enable free flow of
the water spill over from the upper pond.
Our environment team is composed of students,
staff, parents and guided by Colin La Flamme,
Environmental Scientist. Our regular meeting day is
Thursday, from 10am - and you are very welcome.
Daily objectives vary, and include maintenance of
our vegie, sensory and bush- tucker gardens,
rainforest area, bush trail and `quiet area' as well as
assisting with class activities. 6C industriously sort
coffee pods for recycling, every week. !f you have
spent Nespresso coffee pods, stamps, corks, elastic
bands, mobile phones, ink cartridges andfor
batteries, HPS are ready to assist with the recycling
of these - please leave at the school office.
