Mobile networks go green

As mobile network expansion moves ostensibly to emerging markets where solar energy levels are more favorable, solar power appears ready to play an important role in reducing the costs of cellular service delivery and ensuring a more reliable power supply. The OEMs drive toward reducing base station power consumption, along with improvements in photovoltaic cells, have meant that solar energy is now a very viable solution for powering cellular base stations. 335,000 Cellular Base Stations to Include Solar Power by 2013 Solar power will first be used in conjunction with other primary energy sources such as diesel or grid-based electricity, but will increasingly be seen as a primary source for autonomous cell sites. The market for autonomous solar powered cell sites looks set to grow from extremely modest levels today to over 40,000 renewable energy sites by the end of 2013. A further 295,000 base stations are expected to supplement on-grid power usage with solar.

A short review about Power Supplies for Telecom Applications

Basically there are the following possibilities to supply energy to BTS (Basic Telecommunication Stations) in remote areas: Utility Grid Diesel GenSet Solar Power Supply Hybrid System: Solar / Wind Hybrid System: Solar / Wind / GenSet Hybrid: Utility Grid / GenSet Hybrid: Utility Grid / Back-up Batteries The most economic possibility is to use renewable energy systems or combined systems. Here we would like to introduce solar energy systems as a reliable and cost efficient solution.

Comparison of Solar and Diesel power supply for BTS

The most disadvantages of Diesel Aggregates are: Dependence of fuel (world-wide increase of oil prices; limited resources in future) Transport to the sites (long distances and cost intensive transports) Storage of the fuel at site (safety problems - explosions, vandalism, etc.) No unintended operation is possible (high personal cost) High maintenance cost (oil, filters, etc.) Limited life-time of Diesel motors (change of motors every two years) Pollution (noise, heat and dirt) The most advantages of Solar Systems are: Independence of oil, gas and utility grid Most economic operation (very low running costs) Unintended operation (normally no operation personal is required) Long lifetime (only the batteries must be changed every 5 8 years) No pollution, no noise, no dirt

Rectifier Devices
SUW 200 can be used in solar applications to convert DC power from solar modules or AC power from gen-set into 48VDC. The basic task of the SUW 200 power supply system is to supply main telecom equipment (telecom exchanges, GSM base etc.) with Uninterruptible DC power.

2 inputs for Ah counting for Load and Array. The battery Ah will be calculated. 5 alarm digital inputs (high voltage, low voltage, fire alarm status, water level status, intruder alarm), 4 analog inputs (battery voltage, load current, array current, solar insolation), 2 inputs for temperature measurement. + Measurements once a minute: local data collecting of 4 analog (15 min averages from minutes measurements), 5 digital quantities, 2 temperatures and 2 Ah counters. (4 data packets for 1 hour = 96 data packets per day) near 56 KB local memory for one month data collection, local connection and data transfer through RS232, data transfer once a day (after 0:00AM - all data packets from day before), alarm signals transmission after its appearance. Remote communication over GSM network CSD or GPRS (with static addresses necessary).
