BARANGAY BAGONG ILOG

HISTORY
In the early 17th century, Barangays Sumilang and Bagong Ilog were
considered one barrio. These two barangays were made up of valley of sand
called Aplaya.
Different vegetables were planted in the Aplaya where traders from nearby
barrios used to flock to buy vegetables of all sorts and even the Governor
General who lived in Malacanang loved to pass by the place through the use of a
banca.
The natives, not used to living in Aplaya, opted to stay in Ilaya to avoid the
yearly flood coming from the mountains of San Mateo and Montalban. In 1745 a
great downpour occurred and devastated the plants and animals in the place.
Many lives were lost and several natives were forced to evacuate to a
higher ground, called Dilain (now known as Pasig Boulevard and Kawilihan
Village). When the flood waned, a long rivulet was left right in the middle of the
valley and eventually became a brook that totally divided the Aplaya into two
grazing land. Years passed and the new tumana was called Sumilang because it
emerged from the east, while in the former tumana sprung a new tributary and
called it Bagong Ilog.
This beautiful story coincides with the anecdote on how the image of Sta.
Rosa de Lima was found by two best friends named Ubaldo Intalan who was
from Bagong Ilog and Celestino Cruz who hailed from Sumilang.
One fine day, the two friends decided to visit a girl whom they both adored
in Buwayang Bato (Mandaluyong) and agreed to evade from passing the cave of
Dona Geronima. The cave was believed to be enchanted. They reached the
place and were welcomed by the girl cordially. They stayed there for several
hours with heart, filled with gladness and more so of Ubaldo who was then
overflowing with hope for love of the girl.
On their way home, both agreed to gather woods in Tangos bearing in
mind not to go near the cave of Dona Geronima because of rumors that the
mystery behind Maria Makiling and Dona Geronima are one. When they were
about to pack for home, suddenly, they got a whiff of the dama de noche and
wondered why this particular flower had to exude such smell at daylight when in
fact its scent emanates at night time. They did not stop from looking where the
scent came from and then finally found out that it came from a fissure of a big
Kakao tree.
1

Both were amazed to see an image whose light seemed to come from a
crystal stone. The light that emanated from the sunken of the tree came from the
lights radiated by the fireflies that were inside the fissure. The two friends were
astounded when they saw the image of the Virgin Mary. As they were ascending
the image of the virgin, they saw her green dress and her white bomby x mori
attire.
The image was taken to Bagong Ilog and subsequently; many folks from
Sumilang went to see the image at the church. After a thorough search they
found out that it was the image of Sta. Rosa de Lima.
