Identify a central conflict in the book.  It can be an internal or an external conflict. 
Analyze why the conflict occurred.  Write a paper discussing reasons for the conflict 
using evidence from the text.

Strong Introduction (20 points)

Context:  Have you established a context that allows the reader to understand when and 
where the story takes place?  Have you made some important information about the story 
clear?
Thesis:  Did you include a thesis that clearly states what the conflict is?

Body (20 points)
Paragraphs:  Do you have at least three body paragraphs that help prove your thesis?

Topic Sentence:  Does each paragraph have a sentence that makes it clear what the 
paragraph is about?

Evidence:  Do you have quotes from the book in each body paragraph?  Did you use 
quotation marks?

Analysis:  Did you write sentences that explain what the quote means or how is proves 
your point?

Conclusion (20 points)
Do you have a last paragraph that tells your final thoughts or opinion about the conflict?

Editing:
Does each part of your essay have its own paragraph? (5 points)
Is there evidence that you circled words to check spelling? (5 points)
Can I see that you counted the number of words in each sentence and made changes? (5 
points)
Is there evidence you made changes to strengthen your writing? (5 points)

The final 20 points are reserved for changes you make between the rough and final drafts.
