I was sitting on a train in Paris. I was excited because I was going on a holiday. There was a man next to me. He talked a lot, but he didnt speak anything interesting. Then I understood the train was an hour late. Why didnt it move? I was fed up. At last, I hear a voice. It said there was a problem. It said the train going soon. I sat for one hour more. Interviewer Hello, and welcome to the programme. Today, Im talking to junior gymnast, Jessica Tate. Jessica is only fourteen years old, but shes already been chosen to take part in the next Olympic Games. Jessica, tell us how you started in gymnastics. Jessica Well, my mum took me to a gymnastics class when I was seven years old and I really loved it. She just wanted me to have fun and so did I really, but my teacher noticed I was better than everybody else in the class, so she suggested I do more training. She then suggested I take part in a local competition. Interviewer Were you nervous? Jessica Yes, I was very nervous, but I enjoyed it too. I was doing really well and was in first place, when I hurt my ankle during a jump and had to stop. I couldnt complete the competition. I felt terrible. Interviewer Did you want to give up then? Jessica No, I didnt. My mum was worried about me, but after about six weeks, I was ready to train again. Then my teacher suggested I did even more hours because I was getting so good. So, I trained every day before and after school and my life changed. I won all the competitions I entered and I won my first British title when I was 12 and my first international title when I was 13. Interviewer And what about the Olympics? Jessica Well, when my teacher told me I was in the team, I just started to worry. I mean, there are so many amazing gymnasts out there. Would I be good enough? Was I training hard enough? I feel a bit better about it now, but Im not excited yet! Interviewer You do a lot of training. Do you have any free time? Jessica I have less free time than other teenagers, but I enjoy myself when I am free. I like listening to music and going to the park or the cinema with my friends. I like playing tennis as well as doing gymnastics. Interviewer So, apart from the Olympics, do you have any other plans? Jessica I want to go to university. I dont want gymnastics to be the only thing I do. Thats why I dont want to be a coach. I might do something medical, but I dont want to be a doctor, Im not clever enough for that! Ill probably study biology or another science because Im good at those subjects. But for now, Im just enjoying what Im doing.

Max Are you going to take part in the science competition, Ellie? Theres an advert in the school magazine. You have to come up with a new and useful invention. Ellie Hmm, I dont think so. Everybodys talking about it, so I imagine lots of people will enter. Therell be no chance of winning. Max Its not only about getting a prize! Itll be fun anyway. Ive got loads of ideas and one of them might make me rich and famous one day. You never know. Ellie What are your ideas then? Max Ah well, I think you need to come up with your own ideas. Im not going to do all the hard work just for someone else to copy. Ellie Dont be silly, Max! Im not even going to enter. You know Im terrible at science! But you could discuss your ideas with me and I could tell you what I think of them. I wouldnt put my name on the entry form! Are there any rules against that? Max I suppose not. Well, OK, if you promise not to tell anyone. Maybe you could come round to my house later and Ill show you what Ive done. Ive actually already started drawing diagrams and Ive got one idea about a new kind of microwave that cooks things even faster than the ones we have now. What do you think? Ellie Im not sure, maybe you should do something a bit more teenage? What about doing something about a new kind of skateboard or a different kind of trainers, or something about music? Teenagers would be really interested in that. Max Yes, but the judges arent teenagers. Theyre adults. And anyway, the competition is about finding something new that can be useful in the home. Ellie Oh, I didnt realize that. Well, you can still be a bit more original. What about a robot that tidies your bedroom or something like that? Max Hmm. I dont know. I want to do something quite ordinary. Ellie Well, lets talk about it later when Ive seen the diagrams.
