Nat Sci. 3-Physics 3 Chemistry First Semester, 1998-1999 Engr. Tomas U. Ganiron Jr, MSCE Dr. Prospero Covar

The student is introduced to the current understanding of the physical universe in terms of fundamental principles of physics. Basic concepts are studied and related to common phenomena and applications found in everyday life as well as more exotic phenomena one may come across in the news or popular-science media. In the laboratory component of this course the student will gain hands-on experience with principles of physics and use of the scientific method. Fulfills general education natural science requirement Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to do the following: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of physics principles covered in lecture. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between physics principles and their application to research in various scientific disciplines. 4. Perform laboratory experiments, which allow for discovery and synthesis of information and principles covered in lecture. 5. Demonstrate basic laboratory skills such as working with scientific apparatuses, data gathering, data analysis, graphing, and graphical analysis. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between physics principles and practical applications. Activities and Requirements In the lecture, the students will experience both qualitative and quantitative discussions of basic physics principles and their applications. They will observe demonstrations of principles and applications by the instructor using apparatuses. In the laboratory, students will work with apparatuses and experiments designed to test and verify ideas presented in lecture. The lecture material will parallel that covered in the laboratory. The purpose of the lab component is for the students to apply the ideas discussed in lecture and gain experience with the scientific method and with basic laboratory skills. Activities, as they relate to section III. Objectives, are listed below. 1. Course lecture material will explore how scientific concepts have developed through the scientific method. Laboratory experiments will make use of the scientific method. 2. Course lecture material will cover several scientific concepts. The concepts will be studied and tested in laboratory experiments. 3. Lecture material will incorporate applications of scientific principles to scientific research through examples discussed by the lecturer and through lecture demonstrations.
