automatically, stop it using this parameter manually, whenever there is no
liquid in the bypass. Otherwise the CARBO transducer may be damaged.
5 Application Program COBRIX
16 A90IB14
5.3 Product Selection / CIP Cleaning
Product Selection:
Different products can be selected via the submenu [Prod-No] via DAVIS or via
an external product switch. Valid product numbers are: 1...255. The current
product number is shown in the measuring window.
CIP-Cleaning:
If product number "0" is selected, the measurement is completed and all
concentration values are set to "0". Density, sound velocity, temperature and
CO
2
-CARBO are still updated. Optionally the sodium hydroxide [NaOH]
concentration can be calculated and displayed as concentr in %w/w.
5.4 Product Type (softdrink, alc. softdrinks, beer,
wine, alcohol/water)
Depending on the installed transducer type (DPRn or DSRn) it is possible to
measure different products.
DPRn (density transducer):
Set the product parameter [Prod-Type] to "0"
Allowed products:
- sugared beverages
- diets or mineral water
The application program automatically distinguishes between the 2 products.
Products with a concentration <2 Brix are regarded as diets!
Set the product parameter [Prod-Type] to "5"
Allowed product:
- alcohol/water mixtures
5 Application Program COBRIX
A90IB14 17
DSRn (density/sound velocity transducer) combination:
It is additionally possible to measure alc. softdrinks, beer, inverted softdrinks and
wine.
5.5 Adjusting the Diets (Prod-Type = 0)
For diet drinks, concentration units are freely selectable. The concentration of diet
drinks is calculated using the formula:
The average Brix value of Diet Cola beverages is approximately between 0.25
and 0.3 Brix. If the concentration in Brix of the COBRIX for Diet Cola beverages
is out of this range, then check the CO
2
measurement. If the CO
2
measurement
is correct, then check the zero point correction (application parameter "Zero-
Diet").
The system can be set up to display any desired reading by using the Brix-Gain
parameter: e.g. 100% when the target concentration is reached.
Using DAVIS:
Select the menu ADJUSTMENT and key in the Lab and mPDS values for %Diet.
Click on OK to transmit the values to the mPDS. The mPDS 2000V3 calculates
the new gain factor and stores it as Brix-Gain.
e.g.:
Cocentr[Brix/%] COBRIX : 0.25
%Diet-Lab : 101.5 %
After the first adjustment a second adjustment may be necessary for fine tuning
of the reading.
e.g.:
Concentr[Brix%] COBRIX : 100.7 %
%Diet-Lab : 101.5 %
Prod-Type: "0" .. sugared beverages (without inversion
compensation), diets or mineral water.
"1" .. sugared beverages with inversion compensation
"2" .. alc. softdrinks (soft drinks containing alcohol)
"3" .. beer
"4"... wine
"5"... alcohol/water mixtures
diet concentration = Brix-Gain * concentration [Brix]
5 Application Program COBRIX
18 A90IB14
Using mPDS keypad:
Wait until the concentration reading is stable and take a sample for lab analysis.
e.g.:

___________________________________________
Enter the gain factor on mPDS 2000V3 using submenu [Prod-Spec]
[Parameter] [Brix-Gain].
5.6 Adjusting the Sugared Beverages
(Prod-Type 0 or 1)
Due to varying syrup compositions of different products, an adjustment of each
product may be necessary to eliminate deviations to respective lab
measurements.
For getting the best accuracy it is important not to correct the reading after each
comparison with the lab but to correct only the mean deviation of several samples.
These samples should ideally be taken from different batches of the same type of
product.
If an average deviation of the Brix reading compared to the lab results is
observed, then this deviation can be eliminated:
Check whether the correct product number has been selected and adjust
the Concentration [Brix] reading:
Hints:
Different batches of the same type of product require a readjustment.
An optionally installed push button can be used to store (save) the current
measuring values of the mPDS at the time of taking the sample. If so, after
selecting the ADJUSTMENT window, the mPDS values are already
inserted.

5.9 Adjusting the CO
2
The Anton Paar CARBO analyser or transducer measures the carbon dioxide
content in the line. Sometimes, a different CO
2
content is measured in the bottle
than in the line:
During filling of the product into bottles a part of the carbon dioxide is lost.
Due to CO
2
in the buffer tank of the filler the CO
2
content may increase.
In laboratories different tables are used which usually include the influence of
the head space of bottles.
The deviation between the CO
2
volume measured in the process and the
laboratory CO
2
content varies with the product and the CO
2
content.
Check wheter the correct product number has been selected and adjust the
CO
2
content:
Using DAVIS:
Select the menu ADJUSTMENT and key in the laboratory and COBRIX value of
the CO
2
content. Click on OK to transmit the values to the mPDS.
Using mPDS 2000V3 keypad:
Use submenu [Prod-Spec] [Parameter] [CO2-Gain] to set the gain factor for
the CO
2
content.
Hints:
Concentration value 1 (Concentr [Brix/%]) represents original extract or
real extract depending on application parameter [Oext-Rext].
Note that the adjustment of alcohol changes the extract too. If both,
alcohol and extract have to be adjusted manually, start adjusting the
alcohol. Adjust the extract in a second step.
Hint:
An optionally installed push button can be used to store (save) the current
measuring values of the mPDS at the time of taking the sample. If so, after
selecting the ADJUSTMENT window, the mPDS values are already

5.10 Line Stopped (Flow Stop)
During the product run a line can be stopped either automatically or manually by
the filling operator.
During a line "stopped" condition (DI1=1), measuring data collected on
PC(DAVIS) are marked as invalid for statistical purposes.
The output and display of the last concentration values can optionally be "frozen"
during line stopped condition. Use [Config]->[Appl-Para]->[Frz-Mode] to activate
or deactivate this feature.
After product change this feature is disabled until the "FlowStop" signal has gone
to "0" at least once.
5.11 Cleaning
Cleaning of the bypass is performed using CIP cleaning routines. During cleaning
open the sample valve partially to get a proper cleaning of the complete system.
Product number 0 should be selected to avoid data acquisition on the PC if the
DAVIS software is used.

Trouble shooting:
If the mPDS 2000V3 does not show correct results and no error message is
shown, then all measuring data have to be observed.
Selected product number on mPDS 2000V3:
Check if the product number is set correctly. With a wrong product number wrong
product specific adjustment factors are used.
Check whether the product type matches the product in the line.
Check measuring data on the mPDS 2000V3:
Press the "" button and check density, temperature and optionally sound
velocity and current from the CO

VoS: 1450 to 1550 m/s
AI1: 4 20 mA (-12 to 65 C) from CARBO transducer
AI2: 4 20 mA (0 to 10 bar)
Gas bubbles in the line:
Gas bubbles interfere with the measurement. Check if the pressure is sufficiently
high to keep the CO
2
in solution.
Temperature measurement of the DPR(n) / DSRn transducer:
Compare the temperature of the mPDS with a reference measurement.
If the temperature value is not correct, but between sample and ambient
temperature, check if the flow rate through the transducer is OK.
If the temperature sensor is defective, it must be repaired by the manufacturer.

CARBO transducer operation:
Check if the measurement is started ([Run-Stop] = 1) and the transducer is
working. The transducer is working, when the valve actuators are moving.
Pressure measurement (CARBO transducer only):
Assign the line pressure P-LINE to the display and compare the value with a
reference measurement.
If the pressure sensor is defective, it must be exchanged by qualified personnel.
Degassing impeller (CARBO transducer only):
Assign the CO
2
concentration to the display and compare the value with a
reference measurement.
The degassing impeller may be defective ([ERR-CARBO] error message 64 or
higher), if the value for soft drinks is approx. 0.5 to 1.5 g/l lower than the reference
value.

Depending on the currently selected freeze mode ["frz-mode"], concentration
values may be "frozen".
When the signal at DI1 goes below 5 VDC the display variable "FlowStop" is set
to "0" and the optionally frozen concentration values are updated after a certain
delay time ["Freeze-AS"].
5.16 CARBO Transducer Setup
If a CARBO 2100 transducer is connected without separate evaluation unit,
perform the steps below:
1. Connect AI#1, AI#2, DO1 and DO2 according to the above table. (see table
and drawing at chapter 5.14)
2. Select for CO2-Mode "2" (CO
2
in [vol]), "3" (CO
2
in [g/l]), "4" (CO
2
in [bar]) or
"5" (CO
2
in [MPa]).
Use submenu [Config] [Appl-Para] [CO2-Mode]

The Parameter CO2-Mode defines which type of CO2 analyser is connected.
If CO2-Mode is set to "0" or "1" this means that a CO2 analyser of any brand
is connected via a 4-20 mA signal to the mPDS 2000V3. The 4-20 mA signal
equals a certain range of CO2 which can be entered.
If the CO2-Mode is set to values between "2" and "5" either a CARBO Inline
or CARBO 2100 is connected.
2 analog inputs are used to transfer pressure and temperature to the mPDS
2000V3.
The CO2 calculation is done in the mPDS 2000V3 itself.
3. Insert the CARBO constants
Use submenu [Config] [Transd] [CarboCons]
4. Set parameter [Run-Stop] to "1"
Use [Run-Stop] in the main menu

5.17 Sodium Hydroxide Concentration during CIP
The COBRIX program can calculate the sodium hydroxide concentration of the
cleaning agent used for CIP.
Set the application parameter CIP-NaOH to activate this function. The sodium
hydroxide concentration is displayed as concentr for the product defined via
application parameter CIP-P-No. If CIP-P-No is different from 0 then all
concentration values for product 0 are set to 0.
The sodium hydroxide formula is valid in the range: 0 100 C, 0 10 %w/w. If
the CIP liquid contains additional components the concentration can be strongly
influenced.
CarboType 0 CARBO 2100
Carbo-dT CARBO temperature offset (see label on temperature

Carbo-mt Measuring time in seconds (default 10, range: >=8,
<=60)
Carbo-dV Volume expansion in % (default 10, range:>=2, <= 20)
(see label on transducer)
Carbo-sl Parameter for impeller error diagnosis (default 0.03). If
set to '10' impeller diagnosis is deactivated
Max-temp If the temperature exceeds this value than the impeller is
switched off (only applies to CARBO Inline; allowed
range 3040C)
Check-frq Frequency to check the impeller. '100' would mean
check the impeller every 100 measuring cycles. If the
cycle time is 15 seconds the impeller is checked every
25 minutes. (default '100', minimum 5)

5.18 Spike Filter
This filter removes spikes after starting the flow in the main line caused by quick
temperature changes. There are 2 new application parameters to activate the
"spike filter":
Whenever the concentration value ("Concentr" or "Alc-BxAct") deviates by more
than "DeltaConc" % from the last "F-Size" values, the concentration values are
smoothed.
Make sure that DeltaConc is not too low. Otherwise the concentration values are
not updated at all.
The spike filter is inactive for 20 seconds after power up and after product change.
F-Size Spike filter size (0 ... 99) (Recommended: "10")
Delta-Conc Minimum change in % between the current
concentration value and the last "F-Size" values to
activate this filter (Recommended: 1.. 3). For product
types 0 ...4 the value "concentr" is used by the "spike-
filter" function. For product type 5 (alcohol/water
mixtures) "Alc-BxAct" is used.

6.3 Product Selection / CIP Cleaning
Product Selection:
Different products can be selected via submenu Prod-No via DAVIS or via an
external product switch. Valid product numbers are: 1...255. The current product
number is shown in the measuring window.
CIP-Cleaning:
If product number "0" is selected, the measurement is completed and all
concentration values are set to "0". Temperature and pressure are still shown on
the display.
6.4 CO
2
Adjustment
The CARBO 2100 / Inline CO
2
Analyser measure the carbon dioxide content in
the line. Usually, a lower CO
2
content is measured in the bottle than in the line:
During filling of the product into bottles a part of the carbon dioxide is lost.
In laboratories different tables are used which usually include the influence of
the head space of bottles.
The deviation between the process and the laboratory CO
2
content varies with
the product and the CO
2
content.
Check that the product selector is set to the proper product number and
adjust the CO
2
content:
Hint:
This parameter can be changed even if the mPDS is locked.
Important:
If there is no liquid sensor installed to stop the CARBO transducer
automatically, stop it using this parameter manually, whenever there is no
liquid in the bypass. Otherwise the CARBO transducer may be damaged.

6.5 Cleaning
Cleaning of the CARBO transducer is performed using CIP cleaning routines.
During cleaning open the sample valve partially to get a proper cleaning of the
complete system. Product number 0 should be selected to avoid data acquisition
on the PC if the DAVIS software is used.
6.6 Filler Stop Function (HOLD Function)
Filler stops and filler starts cause changing process conditions: pressure peaks,
ambient temperature influence, etc. During filler stops the concentration values
are "frozen".
Hint:

reference measurement.
The degassing impeller may be defective ([ERR-CARBO] error message 64 or
higher), if the value for soft drinks is approx. 0.5 to 1.5 g/l lower than the reference
value.
Error message AI#2 below threshold:
If a CARBO transducer is connected and the sample temperature is higher than
60 C, the 4-20 mA pressure signal is switched off. This causes an error message
on the mPDS 2000V3.
This message typically appears during CIP.

A filler stop signal is connected to digital input 1 (DI1). When the signal switches
to "low" (voltage < 5 V) the CO2 concentration value is "frozen".
When the signal switches to "high" (voltage > 15 V) the CO2 concentration value
is updated after a variable delay time. The delay time can be stored as the
application parameter (Freeze-AS). Values between 0 ... 99 are allowed and
correspond to delays of 0 ... 99 seconds.

This application program determines the concentration of alcohol (ethanol)/water
solutions. The alcohol concentration calculation is based in the OIML table (more
than 2000 data points) and the calculation of the concentration in Proof uses the
AOAC table (more than 100 data points).
The ALCOHOL program of the mPDS 2000V3 is replacing the ALKO22, ALKO23

signal from PLC or a product selector switch. Valid product numbers are:
0 ... 255. The current product number is shown in the measuring window
(e.g. "# 005")
During measurement of a particular product, the product number must be set to
the number (0 255) which was set when it was adjusted initially.
7.3 Adjusting the Concentrations Using Constant
Offsets
The concentration values can be adjusted using constant offsets.
1. Assign a product number (1...255) to the product flowing through the trans-
ducer and select this product number in the of submenu [Prod-No].
2. Compare the displayed concentration value with the results of several
samples analysed in the laboratory. Calculate the mean deviation.
3. Correct the mean deviation. To achieve the best accuracy, it is important not
to correct the reading after each comparison with the laboratory.
In submenu [Prod-Spec] [Parameter] select one of the following
parameters, depending on the concentration values to be adjusted:
[Off-Alc-W] offset for the alcohol in %w/w
[Off-V20] offset for the alcohol in %v/v at 20 C
[Off-V15] offset for the alcohol in %v/v at 15 C

8 Application Program Proof
This application program determines the concentration of alcohol (ethanol)/water
solutions in Proof typically for temperatures higher than 40 C. In a first step the
program determines the density at 20 C (D20). Since the alcohol concentration
changes in a quite non-linear way with density and temperature it is necessary to
adapt this program to the required temperature and concentration range.
The polynomial for the calculation of density at 20 C must be entered before the
alcohol in Proof is calculated. See chapter "Hints for putting into operation" for
further details.
D20 is converted to a concentration in Proof via the AOAC table.

3. Entering the polynomial coefficients for the calculation of density at
20 C
This application program needs an application specific polynomial for the density
at 20 C (D20). The Alc-Proof is derived from D20 and the AOAC table therefore
it is '0' before entering proper polynomial coefficients.
The program uses a polynomial of 5th order to calculate D20.
Coefficients are stored as product parameters.
Make sure that the temperature and concentration range is as small as possible
to achieve the highest accuracy.
If the coefficients are not entered, the display will show
"Alc-Proof = 0.00" and "D20=0".
Coefficients can be calculated by using measured data or by using data from
literature.
The measured data (or data from literature) must cover the whole measuring
range (temperature and concentration). The number of measuring values
influences the order of the polynomial. Coefficients not used must be set to "0".
