Pipe material expansion diagram Metals and plastics contract when cold and expand when hot. This physical factor must be taken into account for pipelines used in heating applications that are subjected to constant temperature fluctuations caused by thermostat adjustment. Tensional forces are prevented through the use of suitable pipe attachments that can oscillate or shift.
