Mr. Rex Tillerson ExxonMobil Corporation 5959 Las Colinas Boulevard Irving, Texas 75039 Re: Moral Conviction for Global Climate Leadership Dear Rex, One year ago, I first wrote to you with the thought that shared values as an Eagle Scout might be a way to reach common ground, and provoke a conversation about your taking action that could save the climate from disruption which now appears to imminently threaten stability of the biosphere, the entire ecosystem, and humanitys survival. I want to explain my solution to you. A year ago, I had hope. Today I am disappointed, but not discouraged, by your lack of interest. Now, I am more determined than ever and will continue to strive to meet and chat with you. I have read an assessment of your 2013 Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040 report and share Mr. Lashofs dismay. Now I realize that you and the management of ExxonMobil are setting the course for earth based on a set of assumptions that are not only myopic, but totally self-serving. You really do appear to be what the movie Greedy Lying Bastards says about you. All the more reason to redouble my efforts to meet and explain my plan for you to be the savior of humanity, stop the acceleration of climate disruption and concomitant social chaos. You are the one who can change the course of history and leave a legacy that will make your kids proud. Read this and please tell me its not true -- its time to talk:

Exxon's Startling Outlook for Our Future

By Dan Lashof - Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Posted March 21, 2013 - http://bit.ly/2012-exxon-outlook Theres something startling about ExxonMobils 2013 Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040 report. Could it be that the company thats spent many millions of dollars and important years promoting denial of global warming now issues a report for investors and interested others that forecasts a 5 percent decline in U.S. energy consumption and a 25 percent decline in CO2 emissions even as GDP doubles? Sure enough, it has. And given just how detrimental a force ExxonMobil has been in our nations climate debate, this is a pretty big deal. Sort of. In fact, Exxons Outlook for Energy is both incoherent and self-serving.

Lets start with its incoherency. That 25 percent projected drop in CO2 emissions thats so intriguing given its source doesnt occur until 2040far too late if we are serious about preventing dangerous climate disruption. Yet its predicated on an $80 per ton CO2 price (which Exxon assumes without explanation), which could only happen in a world that is serious about solving climate change. Still, coming from Exxon this forecast might be groundbreaking if it werent so self-serving.

The decline in CO2 emissions in Exxons Outlook is driven primarily by a 70 percent reduction in coal usagethe one fossil fuel in which the company doesnt have a financial stakeand a 30 percent increase in the use of natural gas, in which its interest is significant. Exxons assumptions turn out to be right in the sweet spotnot for our climate, but for the companys business plan: The carbon price assumed in their Outlook is just high enough to drive coal out of the market, but not high enough to reduce demand for natural gas (at least given their unreasonable assumptions about how expensive renewables will be). So ExxonMobils business plan is full steam ahead toward a ruined climate. The company, its Outlook says, is making what it calls significant investments in oil sands, deepwater and Arctic production, and the oil and natural gas supplies found in shale and other rock formations. Are there other options? Most definitely. For one of them, check out this recently released plan by Stanford and Cornell University researchers showing how to wean New York State off fossil fuels and onto clean energy almost entirely over the same time frame that Exxon manages only a 25 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. ExxonMobil is the worlds most financially valuable company, so its not too surprising that they expect a fossil-fueled future as far as their eye can see. But that future is just not

compatible with a healthy planet for the rest of us. A fact Exxon is still not willing to acknowledge despite including CO2 emissions calculations in its Outlook. Exxon has a lot of smart, successful engineers, and perhaps they will shift gears and decide to get in on the $2 trillion, near-term market opportunity that renewable energy represents. But I wouldnt count on it. The company is not, as its Outlook suggests, merely a passive participant in energy events and forecasts. (To get the full details on the companys power brokering in Washington, check out this compelling New Yorker article by Steve Coll.) Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson has publically stated he supports a carbon tax, but one cant help but wonder whether thats because he knows it is currently dead in the water. And there is no evidence whatever that the company is using any of its considerable political influence to resurrect any legislation that puts a price on carbona price its Outlook assumes without explaining how it might come about. So my bet is that Exxon will stick to its fossil fuel business plan, at which it is unsurpassed, and leave the $2 trillion clean energy market to other entrepreneurs, most of whom we havent heard of yet. In the end, ExxonMobils current Outlook is startlingstartlingly dangerous. Please be honest with yourself, your family and with US, your fellow Americans. Please lead US as Charles Grant did -- emulate him (http://WhoIsCharlesGrant.com) Call on leaders and colleagues in the energy sector to join you -- boldly courageous Begin scheduling the retirement and dismantling of the old fossil fuel infrastructure Shift investments from carbon energy infrastructure to new carbon-free technology Compel Congress to enact a revenue-neutral carbon fee with rebates to all citizens

Compete to win in the race to replace oil by shifting investments to alternative energy now. Diversified in growing new technology, we all win. Rex, again I ask you to meet, and lets discuss how Eagle Scout values could save Earth and create a legacy for you. For the earth For humanity

Reinvent ... imagine the possibilities.

re-energized ... clean fuels for life
