Dear Friends and Supporters, It has been an incredible year of major accomplishments for the Ike & Justine Washington Foundation. Helping todays youth become tomorrows leaders is not just a slogan. It is a goal we are committed to reaching with every student involved in our programs. Our mission---to support and encourage educational excellence and leadership development for youth in the CSRA---is achieved through two major efforts: the Ike and Justine Washington Scholars Program, and our tutoring/ mentoring program, Project BBUILD (Boul Brothers, Uplifting, Influencing, Leading, and Developing). In this annual report you will learn about these programs and the success we are having with each one. We commend the voluntary efforts of Alpha Mu Boul of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. It is these men who direct and guide the programs supported by the foundation. As a result of their work, the Washington Foundation was able to increase the number of scholarships for graduating high school seniors and the number of students enrolled in Project BBUILD. We can only imagine the opportunities 2013 will bring and the new ways we will be able to make a difference in the lives of CSRA youth. Please join us in this challenge as we aim to have an even greater impact on our community. Regards,
For more than 70 years, Dr. Ike Washington & Dr. Justine Washington fostered achievement among their students.
FOUNDATION DESCRIPTION
The Washington Foundation---A Brief History The Ike and Justine Washington Foundation (the Washington Foundation) was established in 2005 to honor the legacy of its two outstanding namesakes. In 2011, the foundation was granted its 501 (C)(3) status. The work of the foundation is done in collaboration with Alpha Mu Boul of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the Richmond County School District, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the CSRA, Paine College, and Augusta State University (now Georgia Regents University). Currently, the foundation carries out its mission of supporting and encouraging educational excellence and leadership development through two major efforts: the Ike and Justine Washington Scholars Program, and a tutoring/mentoring program called Project BBUILD (Boul Brothers, Uplifting, Influencing, Leading, and Developing). The Washington Scholars Program The Ike and Justine Washington Scholars Program started 10 years ago and awards an annual college scholarship to one graduating senior from each of Richmond Countys 10 public high schools. Students are selected through a competitive process that considers test scores, grade point average, extracurricular activities, financial need, recommendation letters and career goals. In 2012, an eleventh Washington Scholarship was awarded to a student attending Paine College. To date, the Washington Foundation has awarded more than $103,000 in scholarships to approximately 113 students. An Endowment Fund is Established The Washington Foundation reached a milestone with the establishment of an Endowment Fund. To ensure professional management of the fund, the foundation signed an agreement (officially signed by the parties in January, 2013) with the Community Foundation of the CSRA to manage the endowment funds assets. Efforts will be made in the coming years to grow the fund so it will be a major source of support for the foundations programs. Scholarships Awarded to Former Project BBUILD Students
In complement to the Washington Scholars Program, scholarships were awarded to four former Project BBUILD students who graduated in May, 2012. Another significant milestone, these students were among the original Project BBUILD students, and have now completed high school. With the addition of these scholarships, the foundation increased the number of scholarships offered from 10 to 15.
PROJECT BBUILD
Project BBUILD changes futures. Its that simple. The program, now in its fifth year, is a weekly mentoring and tutoring program designed primarily for at-risk African-American males who attend public middle schools in Richmond County, Georgia. Project BBUILD identifies 6th-8th grade students who need help to improve their chances for academic success and a bright future. The program doesnt just present ideas on how to achieve excellence, it provides the students with real-life experiences that reinforce key skills and access to successful professionals such as educators, lawyers, doctors, business and government leaders. These professional role models serve as the teachers, presenters, and counselors for Project BBUILD. Project BBUILD is possible through the collaboration of Alpha Mu Boul of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the Richmond County School District, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the CSRA, Paine College and Augusta State University (now Georgia Regents University). A corps of dedicated volunteers, along with many generous sponsors (listed on page 8 of this annual report), is essential to the programs success. COMPONENTS OF PROJECT BBUILD Focus Sessions The first component of Project BBUILD is the weekly focus sessions, which cover issues that are paramount for African-American males. Participants are addressed in the areas of health, law enforcement, education, business and government as well as on topics such as dressing for success, etiquette and respect for others. This component has made a lasting impression on students, as parent Karen B. Hudson explained---My son has truly grown into a respectful young man thanks to Project BBUILD. Classroom Instruction The second component of Project BBUILD is classroom instruction. Students are tutored in Language Arts and mathematics, reinforcing the material covered by the public school curriculum. In addition, they receive instruction in financial literacy, a subject not mandated by Richmond County Schools. Over and over again, parents of Project BBUILD students cite the tutoring their sons received as an essential element for their academic achievements. As Cindy L. Charles wrote My sons grades were so outstanding that he was given the opportunity to attend one of the prestigious magnet schools in our county. The financial literacy segment of Project BBUILD was introduced in 2010 as a way to better prepare students for a successful future.

Students learn how to budget, save and invest. The banking portion of the curriculum offers students, with parental approval, the opportunity to open and manage a savings account. Last year, 28 students participated in the banking program and the amounts saved increased tremendously over previous years. A partnership with Capitol City Bank, the program encourages students to earn money, deposit it monthly and make no withdrawals until they complete high school. Supervised extra-curricular activities Project BBUILD students not only learn how to be successful, they also put their skills to work. The programs events and outings expose students to what is possible if they work hard, and provides the experiences many would otherwise miss due to home, family, or financial circumstances. Photos of many of the outings are included in this annual report. Gary Winfrey, Director of Operations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Augusta, described the impression these outings have had on participants. Project BBUILD has given our youth opportunities they would not have had otherwise and has greatly enhanced the lives of these young men. Mentoring The program also includes a mentoring component to create a bridge for students as they transition from middle to high school. The primary objective is to encourage students and reinforce the high standards, values and expectations emphasized in Project BBUILD. Mentors commit to meeting with students and parents at least twice annually to discuss the students progress and academic performance while in high school.
