Name: Matt Baker & Corinne Pennock Class/Subject: U.S. History Date: 2/20/2013 Lesson Background: We are transitioning into our new unit on Ancient Egypt. The previous day has been spent discussing power and the students perceptions of its definition and characteristics. We looked at examples of types of people in power and discussed where it is that their power comes from and how it might relate to Ancient Egypt. Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will gain and display background knowledge on Ancient Egypt by watching the Egypt Crash Course in History video and completing an accompanying worksheet. Students will exhibit an informed opinion about the power structure of Ancient Egypt by answering the exit question, How does the Nile River and its surrounding land contribute to power in Egypt? Which GRAPES are involved? Content Standards: 17.D.4 Explain how processes of spatial change have affected human history (e.g., resource development and use, natural disasters). 17.A.4a Use mental maps of physical features to answer complex geographic questions (e.g., how physical features have deterred or enabled migration). Materials/Resources/Technology: Computer, smartboard, Youtube clip: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrwC4G9ovxc), accompanying worksheets, Power of the Nile powerpoint presentation, printouts of powerpoint slides (for ELL students and others who need them) Teachers Goals: Students will be able to see connection between resources such as fertile land/ ample water and economic/ political power such as in Ancient Egypt. Students will learn background knowledge about components of culture in Ancient Egypt and how they relate to power.

Start of Class: Matt will greet students and ask them to brainstorm/ review ideas from yesterday. Characteristics and a definition of power will be stressed. Introduction of Lesson: Both teachers will hand out worksheets and introduce video that is to be shown. Directions will be read and questions will be taken. Lesson Instruction: Crash course in history video will be shown. Corinne will lead the discussion surrounding the video and will determine points at which the video should be stopped to discuss questions. The video will be stopped periodically in order to ensure
learning and to help the ELL students in the class to keep up. Matt will present powerpoint lecture about power and the geography of Egypt. Time will be given For students to write down notes, and then he will lead a discussion of the material for each slide.

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: Students will be prompted by Matt to answer the final question on their worksheet, which reads: How does the Nile River and its surroundin land contribute to power in Egypt? Which GRAPES are involved? Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Matt will lead discussion of students answers to and opinions about the final question. Self-Assessment: Both teachers will debrief to consider any behavioral problems from the class. They will discuss how they could best approach such problems in the future. The
teachers will also discuss their thoughts on the effectiveness of each others communication techniques.
