About 71% of the Earths surface is covered by water, but only 3% are fresh water. Up to 60% of the human body is water. And theres no way we can leave without it But, the worlds population is increasing every year and with it, water pollution is becoming increasingly severe And honestly, we dont care much about water, and we are still taking long baths, and washing our car every week. So, isnt it time to act, and do something? What can we do to prevent a dry future? What techniques can we use, what innovative solutions can we develop? Back from a Dry Future: Create me a River wont be a theoretical boring course. It will be a survival course, and most of all, it will show you that everyone can make a difference, save the planet and change the future! Portugal, some facts
Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic (in Portuguese, Repblica Portuguesa; pron. IPA [publik putugez]), is located in the west and southwest parts of the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, and is the westernmost country in continental Europe. Portugal is bordered by Spain to the north and east and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south. In addition, Portugal includes two archipelagos in the Atlantic, Azores (Aores) and Madeira Islands. Portugal has witnessed a constant flow of different civilizations during the past 3100 years. Iberian, Tartessian, Celtic, Phoenician and Carthaginian, Greek, Roman, Germanic (Suevi and Visigoth) and Moorish cultures have all made an imprint on the country. The naming of Portugal itself reveals most of the countrys early history, stemming from the Roman name Portus Cale, a possibly mixed Greek and Latin name meaning Beautiful Port, or even mixed Celtic and Latin or mixed Phoenician and Latin. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal was a major economic, political, and cultural power, its empire stretching from Brazil to the Indies. Portuguese people have very sweet mouth and teeth. Proof of that are the many traditional desserts and cakes we offer, like Pastis de Belm, or de Nata (if eaten anywhere else but in Belm), Aveiros Ovos Moles, or Algarves Dom Rodrigo. We could keep going all day, but its BEST if you came and try them ;) Portuguese wines have been exported since Roman times. The Romans associated Portugal with Bacchus, their god of Winery and Feast. Today the country is known by wine lovers, and its wines had won several international prizes. Many famous Portuguese wines are known as some of the worlds best: Vinho Verde, Vinho Alvarinho, Vinho do Douro, Vinho do Alentejo, Vinho do Do, Vinho da Bairrada and the sweet: Port Wine, Madeira wine and the Moscatels of Setbal and Favaios (Douro). Porto Wine is widely exported, followed by Vinho Verde. There is also a strong beer industry in Portugal.

Portuguese Cuisine
Portuguese cuisine is very good and very rich. It offers a lot of variety, with recipes with bread, potatoes, meat, fish and sea-food. Famous Portuguese dishes include Cozido Portuguesa (made with various kinds of meat, enchidos, black rice its cooked with the sauce of the enchidos, potatoes, and several boiled vegetables, like cabbage), Feijoada ( with meat, or shrimp, and beans served with white rice), Favas (beans), Arroz de Pato (rice with duck, that goes in the oven), and many more. Portuguese cuisine is also very well known for its cod dishes. Although we dont fish cod, we love to cook it in different ways. Some say there are 1001 ways of cooking it. We have Pastis de Bacalhau, Bacalhau com Natas, Bacalhau Brs, Bacalhau Gomes de S, and so on...

History The first known human presence in the area remounts to the Neolithic period. Its privileged location, near the river and sea, brought different cultures in quest of trade commerce, among them, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs. This mixture of cultures influenced the whole region. The settlement enlargement came on the time of the Arabic conquer of the Iberian Peninsula, has a defense point to the river entrance and also to the Lisbon settlement. At this time the city got the Arabic name Al-Madan which means the mine due to proximity of a gold river mine that existed there back in the day. Hungry? The close location to the ocean provides the restaurants with fresh fish and seafood making these their specialties, but you can also find restaurants with other variety of menus. In Cacilhas and Costa da Caparica you can find some of the best ones with good food and cheap prices. Culture There are several cinemas, theatres and music halls to support cultural events like the International Theatre Festival, the International Tunas Festival or the Almada Fashion Week. In July you can attend the city patron festivities and experience typical food, drink and music. Costa da Caparica and Beaches Costa da Caparica is west of Almada and is delimited by the Tejo River and the Atlantic Ocean. In the 60s, it was a quiet fishing village. Nowadays it grew due to the proximity to the capital and became a summer tourist destination. It integrates the Arriba Fssil Protected Landscape, a fauna and flora natural park with 25km of clear sandy beaches. Here you can practice some beach sports like beach volleyball and football. The ocean and the close river estuary provide good quality conditions for some water sports like surf, kitesurf and windsurf
