AIM
Compare the experimental and theoretical elastica of the body under compressive axial loading
PRO C ED UR E
Make strips of transparency (approximately width of 20mm). The distance between the ends of the
two symmetric strips will be chosen to be f or twice f. The adhesive cellophane tape is cut
accordingly. Note that the tape should be cut beyond the required length so that the excess of tape
can be stuck on the ends while the strip is held bent in the desired configuration.
The co-ordinates required for plotting the theoretical elastic curve of the deformed column are given
by equation:
These involve evaluation of integrals which are difficult to solve analytically and hence a numerical
integration tool will solve this problem. Matlab can be used for this purpose. One more difficulty in
using numerical integration is the singularity of the integrand of equation (12b) at ω = Θ and this
occurs only at this point (ω = Θ). The ordinate at this point does not need to
be calculated because it is just f.
Repeat the steps for different configurations (say f/L = 0.25, 0.5).
We then calculate the error in the comparison of experimental and theoretical elastica using:

The theoretical elastica obtained from the matlab output and the experimental elastica of the
strips have been compared.
