Walsh Class: 1st Period Freshmen Ancient Civilizations Date: Friday, March 8th This unit thus far: We currently in the middle of a unit on Ancient China. We spent a day going over basic terms and the role geography played on society in early China and three days on the three primary philosophies of China (Confucianism, Daoism, Legalism). We spent so much time on the philosophies because we chose to focus on them as the most important portion of the unit. Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: -Students will have a thorough understanding of the following two terms: mandate of heaven & dynastic cycle. -Students will remain on task and engaged throughout the simulation and lecture/discussion afterwards. Content Standards: 16.D.1 (W): Identify how customs from around the world influence the local community. Materials/Resources/Technology: We will be using the Smartboard, a worksheet, pens/pencils, pieces of paper for the simulation. Teachers Goals: -I will be able to maintain student engagement and behavior through the use of positive reinforcement, classroom discussion, and a class simulation. -I will be able to effectively communicate the definitions of the two key terms for the day. Start of Class: As students enter the classroom they will be instructed to sit at the desk with their name on it. Students will be greeted on the way in. At the bell, the teacher will take attendance and explain that we will be starting off right away with a simulation (5 minutes). Procedure: The teacher will explain that they are sitting in assigned seats for the purpose of a simulation. The teacher will this explain, in detail, the rules of the game. Students will have been pre-divided into 5 groups of 4 and 5. Each group will take a turn as the dynasty in charge. Each group, on their turn as dynasty, will be given a mandate from heaven (distributed from the teachers). While in charge, each group will be randomly be given three situations (see attached sheet) one at a time. The situations represent both positive and negative scenarios a kingdom would experience. Once given a scenario the ruling group will have about 1 minute to either find a solution to the problem (if a negative scenario) or find a creative way to take credit for it (if positive). The ruling group will then have to explain to the class their solution/explanation for taking credit. The remaining 4 groups will vote on whether or not they think the solution or explanation

are legitimate (the groups will hear about the situation at the same time as the ruling group- allowing them time to discuss their own solutions to the problem). After a group gets 3 scenarios we will switch which group serves as the dynasty group. When switching groups we will be clear in our explanation that the mandate of heaven is switching to another group because the people (remaining groups) sought to change the ruling group. Once each group has had 3 scenarios (resulting in a total of 15 scenarios) we will instruct the students to change their desks to face forwards (this simulation should take about 2530 minutes). After the simulation we will move on to a lecture/discussion based instruction. Teachers will distribute a worksheet (see attached sheet) and begin a very brief PowerPoint. Teachers will sue the PowerPoint to relate the two key terms (mandate of heaven and dynastic cycle) to the simulation. Students will complete worksheets as the mini-lecture progresses (remaining 15 to 20 minutes). Assessments/Checks for Understanding: The students answers during the lecture and their completion of the worksheet will both serve as a formative assessment for us to use when implementing the next weeks lessons. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: The discussion during the end of class review and the worksheet will serve as a connection between the key terms and the simulation while also serving as a review of what was covered throughout the class. Self-Assessment: I will consider the lesson a success if we can maintain student engagement while also ensuring they can apply the simulation to the classs goals.
