Drawing on 25 years of experience in drug prevention, the Truth About Drugs program has solved the problem of effectively communicating to teens and young adults the reality of drug abuse, individually and through mass communication. Both experience and surveys show that teens and young adults are most likely to listen to their peers. Thus the core message is provided by young peoplesome of whom have gone down the path of addiction and survived to tell the storywho speak to other young people in booklets, public service announcements and a documentary film. The cornerstone of the program is a series of 13 fact-filled booklets that, without scare tactics, inform about drugs, empowering young people to make their own decisions to live drug-free.
The series consists of an overview booklet and one booklet for each of the most commonly abused drugs: Marijuana Alcohol Ecstasy Cocaine Crack cocaine Crystal meth Inhalants Heroin LSD Prescription drugs Painkillers Ritalin Each publication describes how the drugs work and the mental and physical effects they create. Reinforcing these facts and statistics are firsthand accounts from former users telling about life on drugs. The booklets dispel myths by presenting the facts about the effects of each drug, both short-term and long-term. They have been translated into 17 languages and distributed across 188 countries.

Government, law enforcement agencies, schools, community groups and other drug prevention programs utilize the Truth About Drugs PSAs.
Since their release in 2008, the Truth About Drugs public service announcements have been viewed by tens of millions. These messages provide a strong introduction to drug education presentations and are one of the components of the Truth About Drugs curriculum. They are utilized widely by government, law enforcement agencies, schools, community groups and other drug prevention programs. In Honduras, where the National Council Against Drug Trafficking has partnered with Foundation for a Drug-Free World, the messages are used in presentations to senior military officers and cadets at the military academy.
Police officers from the Texas Crime Prevention Association use the PSAs and Truth About Drugs booklets in their drug education presentations. In Panama, a drug education campaign was launched by regularly playing the PSAs through prime time on the countrys national television station, reaching 2 million viewers. In Taiwan, the messages have likewise been played on national television to 5 million viewers and are used as part of the drug education curriculum in 500 schools. Across the world, these powerful messages are saving youth from falling prey to the lure of drugs.

Educational film
At the center of the Truth About Drugs educational program is a 100-minute documentary The Truth About Drugs: Real People, Real Stories, focusing on each of the 11 most commonly abused substances. The film presents the facts: what makes a drug a drug, what each does to the mind and body and where they all lead. It is a hard-hitting, no-holds-barred educational film, told by former users who themselves survived life-shattering addictionin the straight talk that is the hallmark of this program: You try drugsit doesnt matter who you are. It doesnt matter how good a person you are or what your goals are. The drugs can take it all away. Sara A lot of times they try to glamorize drugs, like make drug dealers or getting high look cool. But thats only in movies. In real life its a whole different story. Brian Somebody says, Oh, lets try this, at a party, were just going to have fun tonight. You know, its a weekend thing. But its not like that. Its not just a weekend thing. And it starts off so simple and turns into a nightmare. Stacie For young people who have heard it all and are skeptical of every scare tactic, these testimonials bring them face-to-face with the dangers of drugs, thus serving as an effective deterrent. The impact of the documentary is reflected in the responses from a wide range of professionals who have embraced it as part of their own drug education activities: Personal testimonies are powerful. A must-see for all of my staff and students. High school assistant principal, New Jersey The Truth About Drugs materials help bridge the gap that law enforcement officers can face when talking to kids about drugs. The videos and booklets are powerful and presented in a way that really speaks to them. Police officer, Texas "This compelling program was implemented with amazing results. The popularity and effectiveness of the Truth About Drugs program is such that it has been embraced by thousands of educational institutions and hundreds of organizations and government agencies at city, regional and national level in over 50 countries. To make the materials available to educators, law enforcement officers and drug prevention specialists who are in a position to conduct formal lessons in a classroom or community learning setting, the Church of Scientology has sponsored production of the Truth About Drugs Education Package. The package includes: Educators Guide, with a full semester of lesson plans, essays and homework assignments. Each component is
designed to elicit student participation and is flexible enough to fit into any middle school, high school, college or university drug education or community program curriculum.

Church of Scientology sponsorship of the program makes it possible for thousands of educators around the world to obtain the materials free of charge. The coordinator of a Nigerian youth coalition described the effectiveness of the program in these terms: Most lives being messed up by drug abuse are youth who are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow. So the Church is telling them the truth, because most of the time nobody tells them the truth. A California drug demand reduction official said: These Truth About Drugs materials connect, they are interesting, they are designed for youth and are fun to work with.
And, most importantly, I have seen them in action for myself and I know they work. The facilitator of an Islamic medical association in South Africa told of a student who took a copy of the Truth About Drugs DVD, saying, I have an uncle who is on drugs and maybe if I show him this DVD itll help him. A few days later she returned triumphant: I actually got my uncle off drugs. The program director for a Sheriffs youth foundation in a major U.S. city told Scientologists who work as Truth About Drugs volunteers: If we need you to help the deputy, youre there. If we need you to help the kids or supply more material, youre there. Its something thats ongoing. Its not one week, its 52 weeks.

organized volunteer actions across some 180 countries have resulted in the distribution of 50 million drug prevention booklets and tens of thousands of community drug awareness activities. The impact in preventing drug use is significant. Those who are informed can resist peer pressure and choose for themselves to never start drugs in the first place. There is another result: When individuals, especially young people, learn the truth about drugs, they naturally want to bring that information to their friends and others. And thus the program and its activities continue to expand person to person, community to community. The Truth About Drugs campaign is carried out through a wide variety of actions and events, each a proven means to popularize and promote drug-free living. To engage and empower as many people as possible, the activities are simple and designed for participants of all ages. Above all, they are effective in bringing the truth about drugs to millions. Volunteers set up information booths in high-traffic city locations, bringing the facts to the attention of hundreds of thousands of pedestrians through
booklet distribution, PSA showings, informal lectures, drug-free pledge signings, and performances by musicians, acrobats and other entertainers. Local businesses support the campaign, providing the drug education booklets to customers and employees and displaying posters in their windows. Essay and poster contests recognize effective expressions of messages to live drug-free. Such contests are organized in schools, youth activity clubs and community centers to raise

awareness about drugs and increase involvement in activities that popularize drug-free living. The essays and posters, including the winning entries, are exhibited in schools, community centers and churches. Drug-free youth clubs are yet another effective means of promoting a drugfree lifestyle. They are formed around one simple message: Find out the truth about drugs. Club members distribute the Truth About Drugs materials to their friends, classmates

and neighbors, encouraging them to sign the drug-free pledge. Volunteers conduct drug education lectures in schools at all grade levels, using the information in the Truth About Drugs booklets and public service announcements. Young people appear on local public access television and radio talk shows to promote their drug education activities. Drug-free concerts promote drug-free living through music, accompanied by banners, T-shirts and booklet distribution. Drug-free marathons, bike tours and other sports events have become a tradition in many areas, with organizers inviting the support of athletic and entertainment figures and obtaining sponsorship from small businesses and
large corporations. Activities around the world are as diverse as their locales:
City council members participate in drug-free pledge rallies in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Truth About Drugs volunteers in London, England, observe the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse with booklet distribution, petition signing and educational lectures. Switzerland celebrated the 20th anniversary of its drug education campaign with nationwide booklet distribution. In France, the sustained 20-year campaign of Truth About Drugs, with millions of booklets distributed in cities across the country, has contributed to a measurable drop in marijuana consumption among youth after two decades of rising use.

in the face of the undeniable cause-and-effect relationship between drug abuse and crime rates, scientologists brought the Truth About Drugs program to the two leading los Angeles law enforcement agencies that battle crime and drug abuse: the los Angeles police Department (lApD) and the los Angeles county sheriffs Department (lAsD), the worlds largest sheriffs department. The LAPD distributes thousands of copies of The Truth About Drugs booklets at its stations across the city. The LAPD collaborates with the Foundation for a Drug-Free World to hold drug prevention community activities such as National Night Out, an annual initiative that fosters crime prevention activities to create safer neighborhoods through community partnerships. A police station commander in Los Angeles described the value of the Truth About Drugs program in his precinct: The educational pamphlets and videos have been invaluable in educating the community on the negative repercussions that illegal drugs have on society. Through Los Angeles County Sheriffs deputies, more than 2,000 at-risk youth have completed Truth About Drugs education.
A sergeant who uses the materials daily in his work said: Everything in the Truth About Drugs curriculum is pure gold. There is no message about drug abuse that is more penetrating than what this program provideswe cant top it. In 2011, the Los Angeles County Sheriff directed members of his Multi-Faith Clergy Council to undergo training on the Truth About Drugs education curriculum, encouraging them to bring the program to their neighborhoods. One hundred clergy representing a broad range of faith communities, including Jews, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs, participated in the four-week course. The Sheriff described the results of his departments implementation of the program: The Truth About Drugs education program that the Church of Scientology supports means everything to the safety of our schools and neighborhoods. It is a tremendously successful program worldwide and particularly needed. This is why we have trained a corps of our own officers in the use of this unparalleled program.

when a 2005 analysis of italys poriver showed that the waterway carried the equivalent of 4 kilos, or 8.8 pounds, of cocaine per day, the government launched a nationwide awareness campaign targeting young people. Church of Scientology drug prevention programs were already at work in the country but were stepped up to meet the renewed urgency to cut drug usage. With heroin use high in the 1980s and 90s, the Church had launched its first initiative, Say No to Drugs. As part of the program, Scientologists organized syringe pick-up events in public parks and other heavy heroin-use areasan activity that continues today. In total, they have logged half a million hours removing massive quantities of dangerous needles. Concurrently, volunteers conduct lectures in schools, hold drug awareness events and speak on television and radio to bring the drug-free message to a broad audience. To increase the grass-roots impact of the program, Say No to Drugs teams have increased their distribution of Truth About Drugs booklets through partnerships with sports organizations. Volunteers have also distributed the educational materials in nightclubs, passing out booklets and playing the documentary on closed-circuit television. A dozen towns have officially adopted the campaign, and the drug education booklets have been printed in full in a national police magazine. In one year, Italian volunteers reached 500,000 people through 300 events, handed out 250,000 booklets, and aired the PSAs and Truth About Drugs documentary to 16 million viewers. Writing to the Church of Scientology volunteers, Senator Salvo Fleres acknowledged their role in contributing to a 25 percent decrease in drug abuse in the country through the Say No to Drugs campaignone of the most enduring and largest drug prevention initiatives in Italy. Thus, the director of the Department for Anti-Drug Policies of the Italian government might have been referring to the Truth About Drugs when he stated: The alarms of the past years, particularly on cocaine, made us think that it was inevitable living with drugs. But the work of prevention activities, with all the rest, yielded benefits. And now we can say that drugs arent an invincible plague.

The south African province of KwaZulu-natal is a primary producer and exporter of cannabis, known there as daggaa gateway to more deadly drugs. An estimated 40 percent of students in KwaZulu-Natal schools now smoke dagga, prompting the authorities to stage police raids on schools throughout the province with pat-down searches of young students. Police routinely seize stashes of drugs. Truth About Drugs campaign volunteers have tackled this crisis head-on. After personally conducting drug prevention lectures in many schools, one classroom at a time, the coordinator of the KwaZulu-Natal chapter of Drug-Free World Foundation calculated that it would require years to make significant impact. Using Truth About Drugs materials, he therefore presented a three-hour seminar to educators, school administrators and volunteers to train them in the drug education program. He thus created the
first team to undergo instruction on how to implement the curriculum and train other teachers to do the same. Among the first to export the program was the principal of a primary school who not only trained his teachers on the Truth About Drugs program but established a training environment for teachers from neighboring schools. The results created a strong impact throughout the region, drawing more educators and volunteers to the program. A former drug dealer was among those who applied for and completed the training. Since graduating, he has given drug awareness lessons to 1,000 Zulu-speaking teenagers at a secondary school. In this way, the Truth About Drugs program has spread from classroom to classroom and school to school, with 370 teachers trained and some 30,000 students educated in the region. The rapid spread and measurable results of the program came to the attention of the Provincial Commissioner of the Department of Police Training of KwaZulu-Natal. He then adopted the program and established the Truth About Drugs as a core component of the police training curriculum.

Because of the effectiveness of the educational materials and the impact of the programs activities wherever it is implemented, the Truth About Drugs campaign commands the respect and support of teachers, health instructors, school counselors, police officers, community leaders, government officials, students and parents. Statistics show the impact: To date, more than 1,200 organizations, law enforcement and government agencies around the world use the Truth About Drugs curriculum and materials. Some 10,000 schools use the Truth About Drugs curriculum and materials. The programs effectiveness is further demonstrated by the ever-increasing number of young people who use these materials and in turn share the truth about drugs with their friends and families.
