Compass Wireless

1 Introduction
1.1 What is Compass Wireless
Compass Wireless is a post analysis tool that processes and presents result based on captured traffic files from a range of Anritsu and major competitive protocol analyzers and probes. Compass Wireless fits into all departments related to trouble shooting and optimizing of 2G, 2.5G, 2.75G, 3G and 3.5G networks. Compass Wireless is the continuation of the success and experience of Compass GSM, Compass GPRS and Compass UMTS each dedicated to analyzing captured traffic files related to GSM, (E)GPRS and UMTS within GERAN and UTRAN domains. Compass Wireless combines more than 600 statistical results and features of Compass GSM, Compass GPRS and Compass UMTS and brings this to a new level of power and performance utilizing a state of the art platform. Compass Wireless is based on the third generation platform of Compass using a completely new state-of-the-art Graphic User Interface and database framework. This ensures full scalability and usability, making Compass Wireless a future-proof solution.

1.2 Classic key Compass features

Key functionality includes KPIs, overall statistics and correlation of A-bis and A/Gb-interface procedures with full decoding. From the network perspective to individual subscriber traces Compass Wireless gives the answer. Calls are correlated across interfaces providing not just the statistics on dropped calls but also the reason why. Compass Wireless statistics range from simple message counting to correlated procedure counting and analysis of user plane. Compass Wireless may be used to quickly find problems related to customer complaints or for optimizing the radio network. Reconstructs all calls in the network by correlating A-bis and A-interface procedures providing not just the statistics of dropped calls but also the root causes Drill down from overall KPI via correlated procedures to individual messages Analysis based on actual subscriber behaviour rather than limited to drive tests Full decoding of signalling plane protocol stacks Decoding of primary user plane protocols Verification of radio cell coverage and identification of interference Cell report indicating monitored cells and observed activity type

1.3 What is new in comparison to legacy Compass products?

Besides from the speed and all the results presented by Compass GSM, Compass GPRS and Compass UMTS, Compass Wireless offers a wide range of new capabilities such as: Multiple workspaces i.e. processing multiple traffic files and store the result for later analysis New powerful graphical chart library. Modern window handling such as dock-able and detachable windows.

Compass Wireless

Capability of handling very large traffic files. Storage of data in MySQL database for handling of huge tables. Designed for true client-server architecture. Designed for easy expansion with future analysis products in the main application. Cross domain setup of network settings such as cell names. Advanced search feature. Extensive help system. Multiple identical windows can be open to compare results from e.g. two similar calls. User definable color highlighting of tables rows for emphasizing particular thresholds etc. User defined filtering and sorting with use of advanced expressions. Predefined highlighting and filtering of tables that can be activated and deactivated. User defined favorites (shortcuts) for most used features. Advanced centralized logging feature.

For more information about these features and general introduction to Compass Wireless read further in the Getting Started section. For information about installation issues such as centralized logging look into the Installation Guide.

1.4 License
Compass Wireless is license protected, using either a USB key or a license server. If the purchased license is a stand-alone single user license then insert this into an available USB port on the computer that is to run Compass Wireless. In the case of license server, set up the IP address of the license server during installation or afterwards using the server license setup tool available from the Anritsu windows program menu. Compass Wireless will first search the local computer for a license and then try the specified license server.

Compass Wireless

Getting Started

2.1 Welcome to Compass Wireless

The very first time Compass Wireless is started a Welcome page is presented. From the Welcome page information such as general help, feature help, this document and Anritsu web site may be accessed. As for most other views in Compass Wireless the Welcome page may be detached, docked, be a fast view or closed. Explore these features by moving the Welcome page around or use the pop-up menu options available when using a right mouse-click on the tab. When you have examined the Welcome page then close it in order to go to the workbench and get started with Compass Wireless.

The Welcome page may be displayed any-time by accessing it from the Help menu. The Help menu also contains the Help Contents that is the access to general help, feature help and protocol help. Use the online help to get detailed information about a particular result view or general help on how to operate Compass Wireless.

2.2 Workbench and perspectives

The Workbench is the area containing the perspectives Compass and Compass Server. The Compass Server perspective is used for handling workspaces such as creating, deleting and opening workspaces. The Compass perspective displays the current open workspace if any. You navigate between the perspectives most easily using the icons in the upper right most tap: The figure below displays the Compass Server perspective including a list of initialized workspaces.

Compass Wireless

The very first time Compass Wireless is started there will be no workspaces and you as a user have to create one or more workspaces. A Ready workspace is an initialized workspace which is the container of the processed results for one or optional two captured traffic files. Compass Wireless can contain many workspaces limited only by the disc capacity. Besides from the created workspaces the Compass Server perspective contains the License Information tab that can be used to get information of the license in use. Use this tab to get information, about which features are enabled, the ID of the signed SMA if any, the serial number, the type of license and other related information.

2.3 Workspace and initializing

In order to use a workspace it must first be created and initialized. To create a workspace, use the Create Workspace button in the Workspaces tab of the Compass Server perspective. As part of creating a workspace one or two traffic files have to be associated with the workspace and customized label identifying the workspace can be given; to continue press the Finish button. Once created, the workspace is in state Before Initialization and the Initialize Workspace wizard is launched. In the wizard assign a traffic file to a domain such as GSM, GPRS or UMTS. If no specific preferences are needed, such as customizing the time range or altering the default thresholds, then press the Finish button to process the traffic file or files, otherwise, press Next to modify alarm thresholds and other preferences. Note that the preferences available within the wizard are also available from Preferences menu item of the Windows menu. The wizard uses these values as default values for the initialization of the workspace. The preferences are then fixed for that workspace unless the workspace is initialized again. Changes to the preferences do not affect a workspace that

has already been initialized.

Traffic demo files containing neutralized subscriber information are available from the demos folder of the installation folder of Compass Wireless e.g. C:\Program Files\Anritsu\Compass Wireless\demos. For information about what each demo file contains look into the About Compass section for each domain within the Compass Wireless feature Help. After the traffic file or files has been processed successfully then the workspace changes state to Ready. When a workspace is in the Ready state it can be displayed in the Compass perspective. To open a workspace and display it, either double-click the workspace or choose Display Workspace from the pop-up menu using the right mouse button. For detailed information about handling workspaces read Working with workspaces in the general online help.

Compass Wireless

Note that traffic files are still used by Compass Wireless after a workspace has been initialized. Compass Wireless does not process all details of the traffic file but rather processes enough details to display the statistics and indexes the rest. When necessary, Compass Wireless will access the traffic files and get additional information such as in the case of decoding a signaling message. The reason of this approach is two fold, first this reduces the size of the workspace and secondly the initial processing is very fast in comparison to other approaches. When data is accessed from the traffic file then this is done using indexes and in manner that ensure high performance. The speed in accessing additional data from the traffic file is in the same magnitude as if all the data have been in the database.

2.4 Displaying workspace results

When a workspace is opened it is displayed in the Compass perspective. This perspective contains the Compass Menu tab and zero, one or more result views. The content within the tree list available from the Compass Menu tab changes accordingly to what domain (i.e. GSM, GPRS or UMTS) that has been selected during the initialization of the workspace and accordingly to the content of the traffic file(s). To display a result view, either double click a menu item in the tree view or choose Run Item from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, the keyboard arrow and Enter keys can be used. Compass Wireless contains a lot of results but depending upon the particular customer usage only some may be of interest or some may be used excessively and become favorites. In Compass Wireless favorites may be added to the Favorites list of the Compass Menu by choosing Add to Favorites from the pop-up menu when right mouse clicking a menu item in the tree list. Some menu branches within the tree list of the Compass Menu may be disabled. There are two reasons for this, either the traffic file does not contain any such data or the license used is limited to some features only. From the File Processing Report of the Reports menu it is possible to see what the traffic file contains. From the License Information tab of the Compass Server perspective it is possible to see which features are enabled.

Compass Wireless

The File Processing Report is a good starting point to find out what the processed traffic files contains in case it is not already known. Every other result in Compass Wireless depends upon what has been detected in the traffic file or files. If the Compass Menu is taking up too much space on the screen then it may be minimized, detached or the Fast View option may be selected. The Fast View option is available from the popup menu when right clicking the Compass Menu tab. When the Fast View option is chosen the Compass Menu will automatically minimize itself after e.g. a new result view is launched. To reopen the Compass Menu, click the Compass Wireless icon in the status bar.

2.5 Working with tables

Results in Compass Wireless are either presented as graphs or tables. From tables it is possible to drill into other views by using the right mouse button on a column value and choosing the appropriate action from the pop-up menu. Alternatively double click a drillable column to start the default action, i.e. the first action in case that multiple actions are possible. Columns are drillable when the icon is appearing in the column title as shown in the Session and MS ID columns in the figure to the left. Note that especially within the UMTS domain of Compass Wireless many drillable columns have more than one action associated. In some cases it is possible to drill from the entire table to get other information such as all Abis sequence related to a list of A-interface sequences. This too will be available from the pop-up menu but will not be indicated in the result view. Note that unlike legacy Compass products drilling into a result view in Compass Wireless launches a new instance of the selected result view and does not close previous launched windows. The advantage of this is that the same result view may be launched containing different data e.g. results from different cells. The disadvantage is that too many similar views can be confusing. The proposed solution is not to launch more result views that needed and always close the ones that are not needed. Aggregations such as e.g. total and maximum may be available below a table. To unfold and display the defined aggregations click on the arrow next to Aggregations below the table. Some aggregations are predefined and others may be user definable. To create a new aggregation or changing an existing one, click the icon on the main toolbar to display the Aggregations View.

Compass Wireless

Alternatively use the Show View command on the Windows menu to display the various Table Configuration Views. Highlighting such as coloring rows and columns may also be applied to tables based on expressions in order to e.g. highlight certain excessive values. As for the Aggregation View, the Highlighting View is accessible from the main toolbar by clicking the icon.

The Filters View may be used to filter the table to display only certain values. The Sorting View may be used to sort the results in ways different from the ascending or descending way. The Columns View may be used to hide or change the appearance of columns (update the Columns View by using the refresh icon). The Aggregations View, the Sorting View, the Filtering View and the Highlighting View are all based on columns IDs as defined in the Columns Translations View. Note, that the Highlighting View and search is based on Jython syntax and is case sensitive where the other views are based on SQL syntax. For information on how to use the Aggregations View, Highlighting View, Filtering View and the other table configuration views look into the section Working with tables within the general online help. Note that if necessary the user defined table configuration may be reset to default from the Preferences dialog available from the Window menu. Alternatively the table configuration for a single result view may be merged with default settings if Reset/Merge with Defaults from the popup menu is available when selecting Show View Menu from the Window menu.

2.6 Working with graphs

Like tables, graphs are a way to display results of the current open workspace. In Compass Wireless, graphs are displayed using different chart objects, each having different capabilities. Using a combination of Shift or Ctrl key together with holding down the left or right mouse button charts may be moved, sizes, rotated and tilted dependent upon chart type when dragging the mouse. For most charts such as charts containing curves with dots and column bars it is possible to get the exact information of a particular value by hovering the point of interest. For all charts it is possible to assign labels or hide one or more series within the chart. To do the latter use the right mouse button within the chart area and choose Configure Series from the pop-up menu.

Compass Wireless

From the pop-up menu it is also possible to select Export to export a chart into various formats or to choose Toggle Scroll Bar to activate or deactivate horizontal and vertical scrollbars. Scrollbars may be useful for navigating the chart when zoom is applied. For more detailed information about graphs look into Working with charts within the general online help.

2.7 Message Decoding

From most table based result views it is possible to drill further down to get the Message List. From the Message List it is possible to drill into one or more messages to display the decoding of the selected message or messages within the Message Decoding result view. Within the tree view of Message Decoding result view, each node may be collapsed or expanded or become the root node. Use the commands available from the pop-up menu when right clicking within the Message Decoding result view. In order to show one or more messages at a time, select the messages within the Message List and choose Show Message Decoding from the column pop-up menu available from the Msg column.

For more detailed information about the Message Decoding view look into Working with message trees within the general online help.

2.8 Navigating result views

Compass Wireless offers many ways to size, move, detach and arrange result views. Results may be arranged below or above each other or left to or right to other result views or they may remain in the current window stack, what is possible depends upon the context. On easy way to expand a result view is to double-click its tab, when done it will size itself to the size of the workbench, to set it back double-click the tab again. Note, in Compass Wireless the platform term Editor is used as a synonym for a result view and any other view that can be launched from Compass Menu. An example of an Editor or result view is the File Processing Report available from the Reports menu node within the tree list of Compass Menu. A result view may have one or more panes. This is used when the result view displays two results such as two graphs or when a result view has a filtering pane. The panes may be arranged vertically or horizontally when using the pane icons (see description in the table on the following

10

Compass Wireless

page). Panes may also be sized by dragging the grey line that separates most panes within a result view. Another example using panes is the list of workspaces and the selected workspace information pane as shown in the Workspaces tab of the Compass Server perspective. Icon navigation Description Arranges panes horizontally. Available only for results views with panes. Arranges panes vertically. Available only for results views with panes. Toggles pane maximization within a result view. A window stack is one or more result views which are accessible from taps placed next to each other in a tab group and where only the result view from the current selected tab is visible. This is the default behavior but in some cases it might be useful to display result views (Editors) in a way that makes two or more results view visible at the same time. To do so, a result view may be moved onto a new stack using the commands available from the Result menu or merely dragging the result view outside the areas covered by the stacks. New result views that are launched will appear in the current active stack. Results view may be closed by using the close (X) icon in the tab or choosing the various close options from the pop-up menu when right-mouse clicking the tab. In the figure below there are two stacks, one contains a tab group of three result views and the other stack contains a tab group of two results views. The CELL: Distribution of C/I result view has two panes which are arranged vertically and the Paging statistics per Paging Group result view has one pane only. A result view is selected in the stack containing the two result views and hence this becomes the active stack.

Compass Wireless offers many ways to arrange result views and perhaps this may occasionally be too much. In such a situation use the close options available from the File and Results menus to quickly close all views or stack all results views onto a single stack. If detachable windows such as the Compass Menu or the Table Configuration views have been arranged in a way that is undesirable, then choose Reset Perspective from the Window menu to return to the default

11

Compass Wireless

settings. For a full list and detailed description of all commands available within Compass Wireless look into the Reference section within the general online help.

2.9 Menu bar

Compass Wireless contains a dynamic menu bar, meaning that the menus and menu-items changes accordingly to what is possible in the current context. A detailed description of the individual menu items are given in the Reference section of the general online help. Menu File Description Closes Compass Wireless or one or more result views. Offers the possibility to close current or all stacks and to create a new stack for the current result view and arrange it either to the left, right, below or above the current stack. Contains tools that are to be used prior to initializing a workspace. The menu offers tools for merging two GSM traffic files and to decipher Gb encrypted traffic. The Window menu offers ways to handle perspectives and result views (Editors). From this menu it is also possible to access the Preference dialog that is used for setting mainly initialization parameters. Offers access to online help for GSM & GPRS features, general features and protocols.

2.10 Online help system

Online help is available from the Help menu of Compass Wireless menu bar. Context sensitive help or dynamic help is available by pressing the F1 key. Using the F1 key gives links to related topics based on the general help. For help on how to interpret the result views them selves click on the help icon in the upper right corner of the result view to go directly to the help page for the result view. Alternatively the feature help may be accessed from the Help menu where Table of Contents of the GSM, GPRS and UMTS feature help matches the structure of the Compass Menu. Compass Protocol Help is online help on the main standardized protocol layers supported by Compass Wireless. This is useful to e.g. find help for a particular information element of a particular message type. Within the online help system it is possible to add bookmarks, to search in all help available or to limit the search scope to one or more main books. The search option allows you to use AND, OR and NOT expressions together with wildcards. For more detailed information about the potential of the online help system look into section Reference within the general help.

Miscellaneous

3.1 Result views

A result view is any view that display a result based on the initialized workspace. In other words it displays the content of the processed traffic file(s) as statistical results in tables and graphs. The starting point of the result views is the Compass Menu as presented in section 2.4. From here overall results can be accessed and from these result views other result views may be drilled into. A good starting point is to look into the File Processing Report and for the GSM domain into the Warnings and Alarms result both available from the Reports menu. The File Processing Report will display overall information about the traffic file such as the duration, number of links and detected protocols. Several things can go wrong when capturing traffic from a network, the most common mistake is to forget to include all links. Look into the feature help for information on how to interpret the results and for information about various warning message stated. Results available for the GSM domain are placed in the GSM node of the Compass Menu; likewise the results for the GPRS domain are placed in the GPRS node and UMTS domain results in the UMTS node of the Compass Menu.

3.2 Common settings

Some but not all results views depends upon settings within the Administration menu and within the Preferences dialog available from the Windows menu of the menu bar in Compass Wireless. These settings are common not just to all result views within a domain, but also across domains and in some cases across workspaces. From the Administration menu, it is possible to: 1. Assign new names or change existing network names based on the MCC MNC digits of IMSI. 2. To update the mobile type based on the TAC field of IMEI. 3. To assign names to identified cells. 4. To create and name groups of cells. 5. To define and assign names to dual band cells. 6. To change successful and fail criteria. 7. To assign RNC and core network node names. 8. To modify successful and fail criteria for UMTS procedures and activities. Look into the feature help for help on these settings. Sample files for importing are available in the installation path under:..\demos\import files. From the Window menu of Compass Wireless menu bar it is possible to access the Preferences dialog. From the Preferences dialog it is possible to change default settings used in graphs and in results views such as the network code for the network under investigation. Other settings apply to the initialization phase of the workspace e.g. time offset and alarm thresholds. From the Preferences dialog it is also possible to reset the user defined table configurations and to set preferences such as default export folder.

3.3 External tools

Two external tools are available from the External Tools menu of Compass Wireless menu bar. These tools are the Gb deciphering tool and the File Merging tool. The Gb deciphering tool is able to decipher Gb traffic off-line. Another approach would be to have the capturing device doing an online deciphering as it is possible with Anritsu MasterClaw and NetClaw products.

3.3.1 Gb deciphering tool

To decipher encrypted Gb messages using the tool two things has to be available: First the encrypted traffic file and secondly a file with the necessary deciphering keys as passed via the Gr interface. If the keys are contained within the traffic file then make a copy of it and name it something else because the deciphering tool requires that the key file and the traffic files are two separate files. In order to be able to decipher with success, the traffic file and keys most span a time window that allows deciphering to take place. In other words the keys that are used for deciphering may have been exchanged between the HLR and the SGSN many hours or even days in advance and may be reused by the SGSN/PCU for the messages captured in this traffic file. The deciphering percentage is much affected by this fact. Likewise great care should be taken in recording all necessary Gb links in order to track updates of P-TMSI. In a GPRS network, ciphering is done between the mobile station, through the GPRS access network to the SGSN. Ciphering takes place from when the user attaches to the GPRS network. On attach the SGSN retrieves the subscriber information and other information from the home location register (HLR) and based on the keys passed to the MS and SGSN starts ciphering.

3.3.2 File merging tool

The File Merger is a tool that is able to merge two captured traffic files containing GSM traffic into one file. The output file is of file format ULF which is an internal Compass specific format with far less overhead than most file formats. This also means that the size of the combined file will normally be considerably smaller than the sum of the two original files sizes. The files used in merging should have some commonality. It is not advisable to merge two files captured at completely different times or completely different networks. The tool allows merging of two files produced by two data capturing devices at the same time such as: 1. A traffic file with captured A-interface traffic from one BSS and a traffic with captured Ainterface traffic from an adjacent BSS or 2. A traffic file with captured A-interface traffic from one BSS and a traffic file with captured Abis interface traffic of one or several cells within the BSS. The File Merger does not rely only on the timestamp inserted for each message in the files, because they often are not perfectly synchronized. In order to properly merge files, a synchronization algorithm is necessary. To synchronize the two files, the following principles have been implemented: 1. Synchronization between two A-interfaces traffic files: The File Merger searches for at least two calls that make handovers between the two adjacent BSSs. The time adjustment needed on timestamps of records in the second file is calculated in such a way that all messages part of the handover procedure match.

14

Compass Wireless

2. Synchronization between A and Abis interfaces The File Merger searches for at least two calls being established with DTAP messages that can be seen on both interfaces. The time adjustment needed on timestamps of records in the second file is calculated in such a way that all messages part of the call establishment procedure match. Synchronization time is generally very short if recordings have started approximately at the same time. A long synchronization time indicates an important difference between the beginning of files or, at the worst case, no possible synchronization. If synchronization cannot be established, the time difference is defaulted to zero and files are merged using the timestamp. The File Merger compensates for the fact that the source IDs may be the same in both files without actually being the same sources. Whenever the tool detects a collision of source ID in the two files, the source IDs of the second file is modified to retain uniqueness. When time difference between files is established, the output file is created. Records are read from both files. Timestamp of records in first file is left unchanged while timestamp of records in second file is corrected by the time difference. Records are written sequentially in ascending order of resulting timestamp. At the end a text file named AmiMerge.txt is generated to provide the user with the following information: names of the files that have been merged timestamp of first and last messages read from each file timestamp of the first and last messages written from the second file time difference between files mapping of the input data sources to logical output data sources.

3.4 FAQ list

Q1: I have organized my window layout in a silly way and now I do not know how to return to the original layout. A1: Choose Reset Perspective from Window menu to return to the default window layout. For questions and answers on installation issues look into the Installation Guide on the installation media. Q2: How can I share my aggregations and highlight settings with my colleague?
