We walk by faith, not by sight

Living Waters Church Talk

2 Cor 5 How then shall we live? v2-3 Longing to be clothed with the heavenly that we be not found naked biblical language of nakedness is speaking of guilt/shame Gen 1:25- Adam & Eve naked but felt no shame Gen 3:7- After they sinned they knew they were naked THEY CAME UP WITH A TEMPORARY SOLUTION! They covered themselves (A psychology of hiding) When they were supposed to be manifesting the Image of God. So many people struggle with shame Defined: Painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behaviour. Heb word: Shimtsah = Whispering/Mockery/Ridicule Different to GUILT / EMBARASSMENT Guilt = we all know (Guilt is an internal value) Embarrassment = My Life's most embarrassing moment: 17 years old trip to England with Karate team. Stopped at a YMCA in Birmingham I am NEVER returning to Birmingham!!! Two rooms shared a bathroom V. late I dont know WHY I went to take my shower Door automatic lock

Went down the fire escape! All the ay to Reception!!!!! Shame is an external (or social) value The difference between guilt and shame is very clearin theory. We feel guilty for what we do. We feel shame for what we are. ~ LEWIS B. SMEDES, Shame and Grace Shame is closely related to guilt, but there is a key qualitative difference. No audience is needed for feelings of guilt, no one else need know, for the guilty person is his own judge. Not so for shame. The humiliation of shame requires disapproval or ridicule by others. If no one ever learns of a misdeed there will be no shame, but there still might be guilt. Of course, there may be both. The distinction between shame and guilt is very important, since these two emotions may tear a person in opposite directions. The wish to relieve guilt may motivate a confession, but the wish to avoid the humiliation of shame may prevent it. ~PAUL EKMAN, Telling Lies Soap won't wash away your shame ~ Depeche Mode v4- While we are still in this tent We wish to be further clothed Sounds like Adam & Eve language? The thing with the fig leaf Very temporary The fig leaf withers You need to cover yourself again Without GOD in the picture life is a series of FIG LEAVES being used to cover yourself. Popularity/Fame Image Relationships Money Position/Power

1 Peter 1:23-25- You have been born again Not of something that perishes v24- All flesh (man without God) is like grass. The grass withers and the flower falls... The WORD of God endures forever! That is the GOOD NEWS!

2 Cor 5:7- For we walk by faith, not by sight Shame tells you that you are never good enough Your sight tends to agree with this Reinforcing social aspect of SHAME Your faith tells you you are now a new creation (v17) 2 Cor 4:18while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal Replaced SOCIAL/EXTERNAL value of SHAME with an INTERNAL value of FAITH. 2 Cor 5:16,17- No longer according to the flesh! V14- The love of Christ urges us on! No longer looking at people from a SOCIAL perspective Looking at people from an INTERNAL faith perspective Only way to HONOUR them Look upon them according to their God-given potential Who they are called to be! V20- AMBASSADORS for Christ We go from HIDING (Adam & Eve) to MANIFESTING He exchanged His Glory for a Crown of thorns So that you could exchange your shame For a crown of righteousness See: V. 21
