The heart of the prudent gets knowledge and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge Proverbs 18:15

Speaker John Bonacorsi Title: The Resurrection So What? Date: March 31, 2013

Lk. 24:1-12 (NIV) On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'" 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

WHY DOES THE RESURRECTION MATTER?

1. IT MATTERS TO JESUS! a. It vindicates His Word
LK. 24:6 (NIV) He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee.

b.

It validates His Word

I Cor. 15:1-4 TLB Now let me remind you, brothers, of what the Gospel really is, for it has not changed--it is the same Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then and still do now, for your faith is squarely built upon this wonderful message; 2 and it is this Good News that saves you if you still firmly believe it, unless of course you never really believed it in the first place. 3 I passed on to you right from the first what had been told to me, that Christ died for our sins just as the Scriptures said he would, 4 and that he was buried, and that three days afterwards he arose from the grave just as the prophets foretold.

c. It verifies His worth He is our Saviorthe Messiah We do not serve a dead savior

2. IT MATTERS TO HIS ENEMIES a. They became desperate to disprove the Resurrection b. c. d. Wrong tomb theory Swoon theory Stolen body theory (Mt. 27:6/ Mt. 28:11-15)

3. IT MATTERS TO CHRISTIANS a. It prepares us for the future

I Cor. 15:17 (NIV) And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.

b.

It prepares us for the present

Jn. 14:16-17 (NIV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Story of Martin Luther

He was in a deep depression and one morning when he came to breakfast his wife was dressed in black. He said, Woman, why are you dressed so? She said, Well, because God has died and I am in mourning. He said, Now woman, you know better than that. Why would you say such a thing? She said My dear husband, if God has not died, why are you living as if He has? - That broke Martins depression.
Mt. 28:18-20 (MSG) Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave His charge: God authorized and commanded me to commission you: God out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. Ill be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.
